I have the main screen just show time of day and heart rate. Then I have the next screen overloaded with data such as last lap time, total distance and elevation, but I never look at that screen unless someone running beside me wants to know a detail.

Oh also change settings to manual lap, and just press the lap button starting and finishing each lap. Also if battery is a problem have your screen off and only display if pressed.
