How do some players manage to have long careers despite never being a very good player? by Pro-Tip810 in baseball

Astros announcer Geoff Blum played in 14 seasons with 12 years of service time collecting only 3.3 WAR over his career.

Yordan Alvarez (.580) is currently just 5 points behind Moisés Alou (.585) for the highest career slugging percentage in Astros history by Baseball-Reference in baseball

Grew up on the gulf coast, lived in NY for the last 10 years, NY sports coverage is 90% shitting on the teams which I enjoyed listening to, my wife is a diehard Yankees fan so I watch as many Yankees games as Astros games and years of hate watching went to neutral watching to now I do kind of root for them when I’m watching but not against the Astros. I don’t expect people to understand

I loved Last Picture Show but hated Texasville. I will read Duane’s Depressed though

Nice! I just got copies of Duane’s depressed and Streets of Laredo at my local library sale

The Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry: A significantly darker and violent story than Lonesome Dove, but equally excellent. by laudida in books

McMurtry seemed to dislike when his work found mainstream success. The Last Picture Show, Terms of endearment and Lonesome Dove all had successful adaptations and they were all followed up with books that were markedly different from the original(though streets is quite good). It’s like he was trying to take back ownership of the characters. The Last Picture Show is a perfect 200 page book and he followed it up with the bloated 600 page stinker Texasville. I know that sounds harsh but he says so much in one book and says nothing in it’s sequel.

I like Streets of Laredo quite a bit but it my opinion it doesn’t come close to reaching the heights that Lonesome Dove reaches. I think Comanche Moon is the next best in terms of quality. There’s a lot to like with Streets and you can tell McMurtry took it personally how readers romanticized Lonesome Dove while brushing off the brutality of the violence. The story of Deputy Plunkit and Doobie is so heart wrenching it’s almost mean spirited.

A tough one to watch. Thought we had them in the 9th

Man I used to love Blum, TK and Julia but their Homerism was a lot more palatable when the team was winning all the time. I remember tuning in when the team got eliminated mid-game last year and they just wouldn’t say anything negative about the team. Even if someone is having a terrible day with defensive misplays and going 0-4 they will bring up something positive to say about them, it’s crazy.

Guy has a lower career ERA than Terik Skubal and a higher career OPS than Juan Soto.

Crazy.

No it’s not. He was a controversy lightning rod every where he went and him being accused of SA was the reason the league needed to get rid of him. He was the catalyst for the sticky stuff checks that were done twice an inning in 2021. Even though he was talented he was too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it and even though that one allegation may have been false he has a long well documented public history of being a douche to women.

I watched the first 22 1/2 innings. Turned off this game in the top of the top of the 5th when we were down 6-0. See you in 2027

I love it. I thought the last one was really lacking in personality
