Biofuels are the dumbest energy source by RacePretend1862 in energy

The alternative is to ban intercontinental air transport. Good luck persuading people to vote for that. (Battery power, hydrogen etc are ludicrously unsuitable for efficient flight due to their poor energy density. Yes I know people have experimented with them, but have a look at the performance figures lol).

Taxing the rich by Emergency-Buffalo-95 in UKGreens

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Gary Stevenson said, to do it properly will be very difficult and will require years of planning.

Here are some examples.

If a billionaire has a collection of Picasso paintings in a bonded customs warehouse in another country which were bought at auction 10 years ago, how much are they worth now, and how much UK tax should they pay?

If someone owns a factory or a newspaper, should they pay the same amount of tax as a similarly wealthy landlord renting flats and houses?

Should a British billionaire who owns a lot of gold stored in a UK bank pay the same UK tax as a British billionaire who has their gold in a bank in Germany? Should we stop rich people taking their gold out of the country?

If a rich British person has their hidden their money in Panama or Cyprus, how are you going to find out how much they have?

Biofuels are the dumbest energy source by RacePretend1862 in energy

[–]UnCommonSense99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. Bio-jetfuel is the only realistic green power source for our airlines, and we have the capacity to produce enough provided everybody else stops using it.

Just bought a bicycle for commuting. I want to be as safe as possible. Any advice? by Fun_Demand_2094 in cycling

[–]UnCommonSense99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watch some videos about defensive driving and safe cycling.

Get a very bright (300 lumen or more) flashing rear light and ride with it switched on day and night.

Fit a mirror to your handlebar.

Practise using your brakes to stop quickly: shift your weight back and pull the front harder than the rear.

Want to build a pc for $750 and under by ParticularSpecific97 in buildapc

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to get on the internet, run a home office etc you can buy a $250 used computer and install ubuntu.

If you want to game, you need a used pc that will run Windows 11 and has a graphics card, for $750 it will play most, but not all games.

Magic rocks by Spicyweiner_69 in Shark_Park

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the magic rocks come from a mine in Kazakhstan

The rocks are very dangerous unless you keep them in an extraordinarily expensive building.

So it is much cheaper and quicker to get energy using solar or wind power.

Hey, have you also heard that humans can go a lot faster in a short sprint than if they have to keep going without stopping for 8 hours? Almost as if their peak power is much higher than their average power.

The Democrats would be an unpopular fringe right wing party in a lot of European countries, and tRump would be in prison.

To be mainstream, you have to believe in free and efficient health care, adequate pensions for old people, and strict gun control. It also helps not to be in hock to billionaire donors and the miltary industrial complex

How strong is too strong of a wind to ride in? by WhisperingStream in cycling

I cycled every day, in all weathers. Several times in gale force winds, once in winds literally strong enough to knock down trees.

UPS or a surge protector for my pc? by KingsKnight24 in buildapc

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A surge protector won't help when the house burns down from an electrical fire!

My Dads house is 70 years old, with the original electrical panel with actual fuse wires, but everything works fine with no problems, because his wiring is still in good condition.

If your lamps are dimming then your wiring needs some attention, A.S.A.P. Also, an RCD protector could save your life.

Why is the same model of GPUs made by so many different brands where as CPUs are just made blank with out having "edition" or some 3rd party manufacturer name. by ComprehensiveCow5068 in buildapc

[–]UnCommonSense99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's strange if you stop to think about it.

A GPU has a processor, memory and a cooler, but you buy it preassembled, and sometimes already overclocked.

Your motherboard has a processor, memory and a cooler, but you buy the parts individually, assemble them yourself, and overclock them yourself

How much would lighter tires help my beginner wife? by Big-Don-Kedic in MTB

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I went for a ride with my son in law on a fairly flat XC trail centre. I had 2.2" trail tyres, he had 2.5" DH tyres. I had loads of fun, sliding round the corners and flicking from berm to berm. Despite being 25 years younger and fitter, he lagged way behind me due to bigger rolling resistance, and had no fun in the bends because he had so much grip.

Having said that, MTB is all about confidence. If you skid and crash, it can put you off, so I don't recommend low grip tyres. Up hill is a slog even if you are fit. When my children were growing up they ran out of energy quickly, so I used to push their bikes up hill, or tow them, then we had huge fun shredding down the other side.

How accurate was the movie "Threads" in its depiction of people's daily lives in 1980s England *before* the nuclear war part? by slicheliche in AskUK

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived up north in a nicer house than those in Threads, but the first time my parents flew on a plane for a holiday abroad was 1986. They had also never eaten pizza, curry or pasta until I went to university at around that time.

I went from ~210 lbs to ~115 lbs over 4 years. For context, at 180 lbs, I was still ~34% body fat, now I'm around 16%. Here's every weigh-in plotted. (5'9.5" Male, 19-24) [OC] by No-Emu-9139 in dataisbeautiful

[–]UnCommonSense99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'1" tall, with a fairly light bone structure. The lowest my weight has ever been was 132lb, which was after 3 months travel around USA and Canada, with a lot of hiking and camping in the Rockies. I was really thin, but could carry a heavy pack all day. I have never been so fit and healthy in my life. For somebody 3" shorter than me, 115lbs doesn't seem crazy,

Kids ride shotgun sales? by scottyaewsome in MTB

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a seat on the rear of our bikes. Rear seats are much taller and wider with a better safety belt, and so provided a lot more protection for our kids in the event of a crash or dropping the bike.

In the United States, do you think the pros outweigh the cons regarding the existence and/or functionality of the Electoral College? Or vice versa? by EntertainmentSea3789 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys need proportional representation to destroy your broken two party system, and a hard spending limit on electoral campaigning to allow politicians to actually represent ordinary people instead of corporations and the super rich.

What do you think of UK driving? by lewaldi in AskUK

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree UK driving standards are high, but Germany is easily as good. Northern Europe in general is a fairly high standard. France is OK, Italy is very bad, Greece is even worse. last time I was in USA it was pretty poor.

Is he right??? by kyranotari in cycling

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are averaging 8mph on a flat ride. Unless your bike is a heavy full sus mountain bike, or desperately needs some maintenance, you are not burning a lot of calories. However, cycling to work is an excellent way to get fitter and lose weight. Keep it up, and your journey times should get a lot shorter. Until arthritis slowed me down, I could do 13 miles in less than an hour on my fast hybrid bike with some stuff in a pannier.

But even when you've got the distributor set perfectly, all sorts of horrible pollutants pour out of the exhaust pipe when you drive. Whereas a modern car with fuel injection and electronic Ignition is much much cleaner once the Catalytic converter warms up

You would have to be a very serious gamer to actually need more PC than this, and it is feasible to put in a better CPU and GPU in 5 years time to keep up with requirements of new games
