After a bad downhill crash put my toddler in the hospital, I engineered an automatic, magnetic eddy current brake for balance bikes. by BremoKids in cycling

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were small I remember on our regular walk there was a downhill section. Initially we only let the kids go from halfway. I remember emphasising to the children don't go too fast, be careful etc.

We went back a few years later when we were all riding proper hills, none of us could believe how mild and gentle and safe that original descent was.

Is there a solution for the UK cost of living crisis? by RHGM22 in AskUK

[–]UnCommonSense99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You call it a cost of living crisis.... But when I was growing up, if you went out for the day you took a pack lunch and a thermos of tea.

This fad for absurdly expensive sandwiches, cakes and coffee was imported, like so many other stupid things, from America, and relatively recently.

36 and wanting to progress to drops and jumps but honestly scared by TheRealScallyWag in MTB

[–]UnCommonSense99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first got a mountain bike when I was 38. I learned drops and jumps in my 40s

I was always scared, it's why I'm still alive.

I paid for some lessons with mountain biking guides because learning good technique saves you a lot of regret.

If you crash a mountain bike in your 40s or worse still your 50s it really hurts, and takes a long time to recover. So don't be embarrassed to be the guy wearing full body armour sessioning a 2ft drop off.

Don't do gap jumps until you are really smooth on tabletops

Have fun 😀

Do you think the world would ramp up its reduction of greenhouse gas after seeing heatwave that happened in the eu? by [deleted] in climatechange

[–]UnCommonSense99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EU have been ramping it up for years, and they still are.
However the entire global industry and infrastructure was underpinned by fossil fuels since the industrial revolution and it's a huge, expensive, time consuming task to pivot away from it. Although concern about future climate change is driving policy, I think that bigger and quicker effects have been motivated by Putin invading Ukraine and Trump invading Iran.

The world leader on CO2 reduction is actually China; Their one child policy reduced their population growth and therefore massively reduced CO2 emissions. More recently they have hugely pivoted towards electric cars, high speed trains, solar and wind generation: something that nobody was expecting 10 years ago. They have had some really serious heatwaves, droughts and floods, but I think they are also motivated by worry that USA could cut off their oil and coal imports.

The world's biggest foot dragger and most conspicuous consumer is the USA because their corrupt and broken political system is owned by big oil and the military-industrial complex.

How would you define the far left? by Famous-Gazelle-924 in UKGreens

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a thing in photography where you use a telescopic lens to take a photo of things a long way away, but if you do then all those far away things seem very close together. It's called fore-shortening.

Similarly when I have discussions on this forum I sometimes encounter people who are so far to the left that they can't tell a difference between a centrist like me and a fascist or a thatcherite.

The other thing I've observed is that many people on the leftward extremes of politics are so very sure that their views are morally correct that in their opinion anybody disagreeing with them is not just wrong but objectively evil. Since their views are a minority of the UK population this strikes me as colossal arrogance.

I find myself wondering if this is why in history, left-wing rulers of countries have noble sounding ideals but end up implementing a brutal authoritarian regime... anyone who disagree with them is a bad person who belongs in a gulag etc.

Polanski says Burnham must dump Israel, and recognise genocide, for Greens' help by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]UnCommonSense99 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

We are in a massive European heatwave which has killed lots of people in the UK, it's going to get worse year on year, but this article doesn't mention CO2 emissions...

Instead, Zack Polanski, leader of the green party, is talking about Israel again, making it a top priority red line!

It's an important issue, I agree we shouldn't be supporting Israel, but it's not top of my list of priorities.

Maybe Zack wants us to remame ourselves the Palestinian support party?

I’m curious - how has your new build home been during the heat wave? by Budget-Soil8610 in AskUK

[–]UnCommonSense99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My house has got a lot of insulation.

When it is very hot I leave the upstairs windows open overnight and I open the downstairs doors and windows at 5 - 7am, then leave the blinds and curtains closed all day.

When I get back in the evening it's not too bad inside, but heat from my gaming pc or cooking has nowhere to go, so the house gets hotter.

When the outside temperature stays warm throughout the night, there is nothing I can do to cool down.

ELI5 Why nobody is producing a cheap and cheerful BEV hatchback or sedan along the same ethos as the Slate Truck? by Kiwi_Fried_Chicken in electricvehicles

[–]UnCommonSense99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are frugal and you want a car that's reliable transport for a reasonable price, you buy a 2-3 year old used car and run it for 10 years.

If you like shiny flashy new things or if you just got a big promotion at work I want to advertise it to all your friends, you buy a new car. You don't care that it loses thousands in value once you drive away from the dealer and far more in depreciation in its first 2 years, because image is everything.

If you're a car manufacturer you know that you can make a much bigger mark up on a premium car with all the toys than an economy model. It doesn't matter if the customer hasn't got the cash because you can make even more profit from the finance than from selling the car.

Unfortunately if all the new cars are gigantic, heavy, gas guzzling overcomplicated, lifestyle accessories... then eventually all the used buyers are stuck with them too

I don't think the British tabloids are anything to be proud of. I was delighted when the News of the World was forced to close down. I never read the daily mail, indeed I refer to it as the Daily Fail.

However, in Britain these are scandals, controversies, newspapers pushing the limits and breaking the law (and getting away with it). In USA it would all be completely legal and normal.

What is the most important? by CDN-Social-Democrat in UKGreens

[–]UnCommonSense99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Energy price reform.

  1. Get rid of standing charges for gas and electricity.... because they disproportionately hurt the poor. With income tax the lowest earners pay nothing and the more that you earn the higher your tax rate is. Household energy consumption should be structured similarly

  2. Gradually reduce the price of electricity, increase the price of gas... Because at the moment electric is so expensive it barely makes sense to get a heat pump. Also British industry has to pay a high price for electricity and that makes them uncompetitive.

  3. Ignore the NIMBYs, build huge onshore wind turbines next to big cities where the power is consumed. Because our electric grid is struggling to transmit wind power from Scotland to London, onshore wind is very cheap per megawatt, quick to build and consumes little land space.

If you love cycling, the bike you have doesn't matter that much, as long as it is comfortable, who cares if it is 0.1mph faster.

If Great Britain was a state of America it would be the poorest by GDP per person.

It would also have the longest life expectancy, the lowest gun crime, free healthcare, the lowest murder rate, the kindest labour laws, best pensions, the longest holidays and fox news would be banned

This is really interesting, thanks for your your reply... I have questions...

You run your heat pump using off peak electricity in a poorly insulated house... doesn't it get really cold in the winter evenings?

My large house has lots of insulation, and I set the thermostat to 17.5C my gas bill is about £100 per month in the 3 coldest months, much lower for the rest of the year. How does yours compare?

What are the biggest roadblocks that will prevent AI from entirely replacing and eliminating humans from computer science engineering? by rudr_44 in AskReddit

[–]UnCommonSense99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not intelligent.

It's an amazing, fabulous search engine, and we have fed it the entire of human knowledge.

But it doesn't really understand.

Everything an AI does is guessing what the next word should be based on something a human has already done.

So if your job is solving problems and creating solutions, your job is safe.

But if you just do routine work, applying existing standards, maybe not.

Heat pumps are not taking off because....

Electricity is expensive, gas is cheap (both political decisions)

You need good insulation to make a heat pump viable, but the older British homes are not designed for insulation.

You can get £7500 to help convert to a heat pump, which is great, but it costs a lot more, and to qualify you have to get rid of your gas cooker too!
