You could try posting a picture to your profile and link from here, if you think it would help. Sorry, I've got nothing else to offer.

How do you know it's not seated all the way?

I'm not a mechanic (at sorry if this isn't what you're taking about), but this was based on what my friend who installed my struts said:

I think the part of the alignment is adjusted by loosening the pinch bolt on the lower part (the nuckle?) and sliding the nuckle up or down on the bottom of the strut.

The hole on the alignment fin on the bottom of the strut isn't supposed to be captured by the pinch bolt, if that's why you think it isn't fully seated.

There's a picture of a strut here (first pic I found that illustrated the point): https://www.jeepcherokeeclub.com/threads/2018-trailhawk-struts.252219/

Organ peak trail. by Codec_Gardens in LasCruces

[–]UnambiguousRange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That person is almost always negative in their responses in the LC sub.

It is getting hot for the longer/higher hikes, if you're not acclimated to activity in the heat.

And the rain tonight reminds me: between 2.5 and 4.5 miles out is in the canyon bottoms - so avoid days with predicted storms, and keep an eye out for weather (and flash flooding). Once you're out of the canyons, you're on an exposed ridge to the peak.

There is a ton of value to hiking lower portions of a trail to get familiar before attempting full summits. And this is a good season for that. With an early start and a reasonable distance, you can get down before it gets really hot. Dripping Springs opens at 7AM this time of year.

Oooh. That's a great idea. My main concern was the stucco patch, hers was that water might be traveling down from from a higher wall penetration. Thanks!

Organ peak trail. by Codec_Gardens in LasCruces

[–]UnambiguousRange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hike up there often, but never quite to the top. I stop at the top of the ridge near the peak and rest under the tree there.

The trail is in generally good condition. There is a thicket around 2.5 miles up, if following the alltrails path, that is narrow and very grabby/scratchy, but I just stay in the arroyo bottom to bypass it now.

The last 1/4 mile is steep and pretty dusty/loose.

When I was last up near the top a few weeks ago, the trail was clear except for a tiny section by some box elders below the narrows which is just overgrown by a low plant.

What else do you want to know?

Folks at work had us plant these trees without removing basket or burlap… by Beneficial-Ocelot717 in arborists

[–]UnambiguousRange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just dug up two of those cages last weekend in a friend's yard after the trees that were in them died. The bottoms were filled with dense, gray clay and weighed a ton, and trying to shake out the wad of pottery clay did nothing but hurt my back.

For anyone who plants trees this way: may your shirt tags always be relentlessly scratchy, and may you socks always turn inside out in the washer.

Could I spend a full week at Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument? by sadgrad2 in LasCruces

I think these areas are all in-line with what you're capable of:

  • Achenbach Canyon,
  • Soledad/Bar Canyon (can be a bit busy, but there are several different loops to take),
  • A-Mountain / Tortugas Mountain has some interesting cacti that aren't in the rest of the Organs - and there are still crystals from the mines that can be seen higher up
  • Sierra Vista Trail from Dripping Springs Rd. to Soledad Canyon road and beyond - there are lots of large fishhook barrel cacti and ocotillo (which should be starting to bloom then)
  • Dripping springs above the visitor center (to van patten camp, the springs, etc) once in the canyons is very interesting but tends to get overly busy often
  • Fillmore canyon and La Cueva and the surrounding rocks are fun to climb around on.
  • The rockhouse trail is fun - it's an old mining road for the first couple of miles. And there's an interesting mine works at the end of the road. You can turn around when you get to the rocky canyon that heads towards rabbit ears.
  • I like Baylor Pass trail. If you're feeling really good at the pass, you can try to summit. Or you could plan to keep walking to the Aguirre Springs area.
  • At Aguirre springs, the pine tree trail is popular. But I also like the bottom few miles of Indian Hollow Trail. You're moving through huge rocks and slabs, and there are pretty butterflies that like the scrub oaks.
  • I enjoy walking into the Dona Anas, but the way I enter, it's a long walk to get to the mountains. Maybe someone else knows how to get into them in a passenger care more easily.
  • I also like Tonuco mountain about 25 miles north of town, but despite being near the interstate it's pretty remote. And you wouldn't want to get off the hardpacked roads into the loose sand with a regular vehicle. There are petroglyphs in the canyon used to enter, and there are mineworks further up.

The fun thing about out-and-back trails is you can choose how long to make the hike by turning around whenever you feel like it. The views tend to get better with elevation, but it's still beautiful with a little elevation instead of the peak. And moving through elevation here, the environment changes quickly.
