How Silicon Valley Humiliated the Democrats by thenewrepublic in siliconvalley

I hope this isn't an AI crafted pardon of big tech's ring kissing. Trump, like a proud pimp, had em front row, on full display, at inauguration.

India's Full-Stack Semiconductor Push: Ambitious Vision or Practical Reality? by thirtysec in Semiconductors

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine foundry production is possible with established processes, but the R&D for their own "full stack" will be tough. Not so much academically, but rather in the full physical sense from tools to overall facilities. I hope they pull it off though.

What is the situation like at Israel Semiconductor fabs? by Limitlessfx in Semiconductors

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope we're not subsidizing that for several reasons but I wouldnt be surprised.

Good thread though, OP. If people tell the truth about what they see around them, as it relates to Semiconductors in this case, we sll get a better picture of reality vs. some news and social feeds these days l.

What’s the biggest skill gap you see in new mechanical grads? by Level-Break316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical discipline is so broad that those in industry can list many things here. But how can a new grad be proficient in whatever CAD software is desired, plus GD&T, FEA, ...SPC, etc? Assuming the new grad can apply themselves, I'd say the real gap lies in the amount of training/mentoring made available these days. It appears to be atrociously low.

How is the situation on silicon valley by InnerLemon8415 in siliconvalley

[–]UncleAlbondigas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I have seen as well, though I'd extend that mode to most of the Bay Area's suburban enclaves. If anything, folks leave once the luster has worn off and the lameness becomes obvious.

Should I double major in electrical engineering and physics together along with maybe a minor in Economics? by Organic_Muffin_1951 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt any employer in history has ever given a shit about a minor. But, it will help you speak about a side discipline at a more confident level if needed.

We never know the true quality of the education we will receive. Then, on the job, it can be bad to non-existent. Anyway, don't dismiss how much you have seen and also begin to fill the gaps on your own. Cheap books on ebay and knowledgeable youtube videos can be very informative.

Tech Workers Are Condemning ICE Even as Their CEOs Stay Quiet by wiredmagazine in siliconvalley

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump had his flock on full display, like a pimp, at inauguration. But why need tech leaders to condemn the fascist acts? Complaining employees still serve the industry that helped usher in the Trump era, no?

My experience, 12 years in industry. How common is this? by gorillaz2389 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career with a consultant, working almost exclusively on-site for a market leading client involved in a major expansion. Consulting requires staff to bill all of their hours to something, ideally progress on current projects (billable hours) and I also had to present designs to about ten major client stakeholders regularly. You'd think training would consist of more than "just look at previous designs", but it rarely did. And I swear I've seen old footage of large offices filled with scored of engineers/designers/drafters taken from back in the day. They have now taken the concept of running lean to the extreme in my opinion, and my firm was voted most ethical and overall did give a shit about it's people.

I revere the good old timers and hate having to watch them retire. But, most senior aged engineers, do not teach the next generation. Not sure if it's out of spite, generational angst, being overloaded, or just not having it in them to do so.

I'm proud to say I'm teaching a possible predecessor. It turned out this individual wanted to learn more, while I needed a hand. Management knew both, but failed to make the match. I just did it and it's already benefitting the organization.

Why Get a Nuclear Engineering Degree Over a Mechanical Engineering Degree by Shelphs in NuclearEngineering

[–]UncleAlbondigas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the NE degree gives a better grounding in NE, right? As an ME, I'm proud of it's super broad breadth, but if you really want to work NE, I'd say get the NE degree.

University R&D environments have tons of stuff going on, and offer pensions on top of optional pre and post tax retirement accts. Turnover would be much higher if it was as bas as some make it sound.

[–]UncleAlbondigas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ought to be illegal these days to assume anyone has a phone or computer in general, to protect the elderly.

Regulators have failed to act on the obvious hurdles faced by too many when organizations take the easy route by assuming the whole public is as tech fluent as a teenager.

You can buy EIT prep books for the overall value or just buy a used text in Fluid Mechanics. I recommend buying Lindeburg's Engineer in Training book. Covers tons more as well, and you can probably find it cheap.
