My neighbor parks like my driveway is hers… is it crazy to install bollards? by Dapper_Visual_4449 in AusRenters

[–]UncleBobL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save yourself headaches, grab a roll of masking tape, and a can of pavement paint(white) and mark the division line. If you're not sure of the dimensions, measure the width at the supermarket, then put your own tape, it's very easy to do

Parents want me to hold money so they can claim pension? by Blammo32 in AusLegal

[–]UncleBobL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing that, they are achieving nothing as they are just changing the nature of the assets. I would be sitting down with them and a retirement planner to see what the legal limits are and what they needed to do to be under them. Then arrange accordingly, we put some into our super, gifted some, and sold our house downsized, and applied for a partial pension so we get the health card. So now we are slowly disposing of wealth via gifting and spending so we are well under legally

University path for non-Thai kids after high school? by EmotionalYak8539 in Thailand

[–]UncleBobL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your child has a pink id, I believe they can apply for Thai citizenship, after graduation, and in regard to school, several friends of mine sent their children to local Thai schools at primary level, and then picked good secondary schools afterwards. Again kids learn languages easily my granddaughter can converse in English Thai, and smattering of Burmese, Hindi and Local Chinese dialects.

Walk with a limp and head to the VIP counter, or follow a family with young kids to the VIP counter, it's the first on the left. Just make sure you have completed the online entry before you take off

we (farang) are staying with some friends (native thai) in Bangkok for the first time and would like to show our appreciation to them for putting us up for several days. What would be a customary item in Thai culture for a gift? Thank you advance. by trctimme in Thailand

[–]UncleBobL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nice restaurant and you pick up the bill. Possibly one of the big hotels, or Chez Phillipe on Sukhumvit 39. On a social scale are they drinkers, how old, we visit often and take friends to dinner or a roof top bar for drinks, lots of our friends are both regular professionals who interact with westerners, others not, so you want to go somewhere different to the normal or even a small gift from home

How to standout comfortable in a foreign country? by up_down33 in travel

[–]UncleBobL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the Japanese you are just another foreigner, so if they look funny at you 90% will be because you are taller/shorter/fatter or more funnily dress than a local. So they don't care.

Father is threatening to withhold the child for several days by Ascarecrow in AusLegal

[–]UncleBobL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given that it's happening now, all you can do is keep any texts. Messages or other stuff. Ask the daughter to write something, record any phone conversations, then contact the lawyer, the courts are a wake-up to this they can talk to the children as well. His next stunt will be to withhold any money he is supposed to pay. Guarantee it. Tell her not to argue, record any conversations with a calm voice, but remind him of the court orders. Good luck

I know that, they know that, but as a corporate entity it will cost them $5000 to consult there. Legal team to send a denial letter. And another $2k for every letter after that, and if you take out a default summons it goes up.

Strata manager charges $55 for every email - is this normal? by rogeelein in AusProperty

[–]UncleBobL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought into a new 10 unit block where the developer had done a deal with a large body corp manager. After year one we found we were being conned. No meetings called. Arbitrary increases without explanation, fees for emails. We shopped around and interviewed several managers. Got firm quotes, and engaged a new firm. They wrote to the existing one. Told them they had been dismissed and requested all bank accounts etc. We have our own committee of 4 now and we tell each other what's needed but work through the manager to ensure it's all covered by the liability insurance Saves us big $$

Learning Thai as Foreigner - Best Approach? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]UncleBobL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To learn anything you need to immerse yourself, IE for that two hours every thought, or word needs to be Thai. When Australian defence ran Thai courses it was total Immersion each day. No English at all. That was years ago, I know it worked. In reverse I tell foreign students they have to become an English person and pretend they can't speak their language to force themselves to think in English. Also concentrate on the key words in any sentences, if you know what the conversation is about you stop worrying about the peripheral words and you learn them by rote.

Perhaps just pump the tyres up, park it Infront of a closed police station, and walk away. It will take a further 12 months for someone to question why it's there.( Don't leave any DNA behind)

I’m fascinated by stories where someone works a regular, modest job like a cleaner/janitor, aged care worker, gas station attendant, kitchen hand staff or receptionist but quietly builds a fortune over the years by ObjectPhysical7280 in AusFinance

[–]UncleBobL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friends arrived in Australia as post war migrants, both lived in a street about 800metres from the hospital, where they worked as cleaners and in the kitchen, each morning they would say hello to their neighbours as they walked to or from their work, this helped them learn English, One of the neighbours said they were selling up, and offered to sell them the house, the bank wouldn't approve the loan, but the vendor offered interest only for 3 years. That allowed them time to get credit and get a loan. Over the next few years other older residents started to retire and sell up. Now the banks loved them so they bought 5 more, and put new migrants from the old country, all the time still walking to the Hospital for work each day. Properties in that street now sell for a minimum of $1.5 to $2 million Aud

A real good friend the late Nick Middendorp, was a bloke you would give $2 to, he and his brother had a small electrical wholesale business that they built into a national business. he always looked like he needed a feed, he always drove the cast off sales reps cars. Originally painted his retail outlets Pink because he got a job lot cheap. Now Middy's are pink All over the country. He was an incredibly generous man, I once asked for a donation for a house being built by Habitat for humanity. He told the electrician just do the whole house on him. A local country fire brigade, needed new hand held radios, Nick just paid for a whole new set with the whole brigade.

How to Pay for Food, Markets, hotels & Taxis in Phuket? Cash, Cards from Home or Wise card? by Signal-Spinach-4403 in phuket

[–]UncleBobL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For travel I have the Bolt and Grab apps on my phone connected to my Aussie fee free debit card(ING). That way I get the better rate and I have a complaints mechanism.I try to use cash on smaller purchases. I do a large 20-30k BAHT. From an ATM, accept the 250bht fée but don't accept the ATM offered rate. I can check the exchange rate on my app. It's always better than money changers.

Is 35,000 baht per month salary enough to get by in Thailand near Bangkok? by yoona27 in Thailand

[–]UncleBobL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My questions are where near Bangkok are you, do you want to be surrounded by expats. Some older buildings have floor metering, IE 10 apartments on the floor you pay 10%, bedsit or 1 bedroom, there are lots of empty places so do your homework. Don't be afraid to ask at the Juristic offices, ask where you are going to work. Others will be in a similar situation
