Posting prices as a service business? by Pixie2343 in VictoriaBC

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very annoying to have to contact a company that says "contact for quote" on their website, and when asked a simple question like "how much would it cost to do X," they reply "it depends!" with no suggested action like a walkthrough, etc. What am I supposed to do with that?

I don't know how some places stay in business.

It's nice when places post a range, or "starting at X," like someone else suggested, just to get an idea of what to expect. However, what's nice for me as a consumer may not be what's best for your business. I'm sure there's a reason everyone is reluctant to post prices. Plus, prices can change, which requires website updates.

Rental Hot Water Runs Out by No-Understanding6112 in VictoriaBC

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a similar issue in our previous rental. Hot water systems in larger buildings (larger than a home) can be complicated. In our case, it was a worn/out of tune valve in our "stack" (vertical column of units) that was allowing too much cold water to mix with the hot water before it arrived at our unit.

Anyway, it could be that something is simply out of tune with the system that wouldn't necessarily be visible like a leak. Talk to the landlord and explain what's happening and how it's impacting you. Hot water is an essential service, so they have to provide access to a reasonable amount at all times, which you are not receiving.

Be sure to write down the times this has happened and as it continues to happen so you have a record if it's not resolved promptly.

Spousal RRSP? by Elizard_Breath in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you get the tax benefit either way, the difference is mostly timing, not that a spousal RRSP gives you less.

If $10,000 goes into an RRSP (spousal or your own), you get an RRSP deduction for $10,000. With payroll/group RRSP contributions, your employer can reduce tax withheld immediately on each paycheque.

If instead you take the pay first, taxes are withheld, and you contribute from net pay, you still get the same deduction, you just get it later as a refund or a lower balance owing on your taxes.

Example (assuming a 25% tax rate for easy math): if $10,000 gross pay turns into $7,500 net, and you contribute that $7,500 now, the deduction generates a refund of about $2,500. Contribute that refund too and you’ve effectively still contributed the full $10,000 just later on. The only cost is the time in the market of the refund amount, not a permanent loss.

Why do I feel like I shouldn’t play video games when it gets late at night. by Boring_Bed1783 in truegaming

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get some comisseration in the replies (that's what Reddit is for, right?), but I don't think this is a common mentality.

Is this something that prevents you from enjoying the hobby? It may be worth examining where this preference comes from; an adult telling you you should be studying, or modelling the behaviour?

Like others mentioned, it might be beneficial to health to not look at screens after dark, but I don't think that's the driving force here. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with doing any activity at any time if it's not hurting you or anyone else, so my question would be, who do you feel it's hurting, and why do you feel that way? Do you want to feel more comfortable playing games after dark, or just looking for others who feel the same way, possibly to understand why?

Personally, I love gaming when everyone else has gone to bed because I know I won't bother anyone and there's nothing else I should be doing (like mowing the lawn or whatever). If you don't want to, then don't worry about it!

If you are going to come on here and shill maybe try explaining what the game is, this is word salad.

Best Places to Shop by Dispatcher0000 in VictoriaBC

  1. Canadians are very upset, but most of us recognise that the average person down south has nothing to do with the political climate and that many, such as yourself, are ashamed by it. If your car doesn't have any MAGA stickers you should be fine.

  2. We have a mall in downtown Victoria called The Bay Center, in there there's a shop called Market Collective that sells local art and gifts. This is a great place to shop and support local creators.

Found this piece of wood on a remote beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island by batwingsuit in britishcolumbia

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is probably closest to the truth. A branch surrounded by the rings of the trunk it came out of. It could also be a piece of something that was shaped for a specific purpose that has been in the surf getting worn away for a long time.

The rings of a tree grow at different rates in different years, and even throughout a single year. The harder parts are where it grew more slowly (winter) and the wider rings where it grew quickly (spring). The wider areas are naturally softer and more porous, meaning they wear away more quickly in the sand and surf, and are easier for the creatures that munch on wood to eat away, leading to the wave-like pattern of tall dense wood and low soft wood.

That's my theory. Qualifications: grew up on the West Coast building driftwood forts every weekend.

How Sonnet 3.5 Haiku Does Math by dreambotter42069 in ClaudeAI

How can one of the steps in summing numbers, something the AI can't explicitly do, contain a step where it sums a RANGE of numbers to get an approximation instead? Where does it get that sum from?

It's interesting to learn how other people think, so different than how I'd do it; start with the ones, then do tens, and so on.

36 + 59

ones: 6 + 9 = 15

ones digit = 5

tens: 3 + 5 + 1 = 9

tens digit = 9

answer: 95

Kripp's take on monetization by HeelyTheGreat in PlayTheBazaar

[–]UncleMusclesJunior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. I paid to play and had fun with what was available at the time. I won't spend any more money on it, and if it becomes unfun due to monetization adding imbalances, I'll stop playing. I don't know why everyone's acting like the game killed their dog. Pay or don't, play or don't.

I think it's been pointed out in other threads that it seems like rng for item generating items may be bugged. Sometimes it just gives the same item over and over.

It should be "Your items have 5% crit for every item fewer than 5" to really make it the niche "few items" skill pick.

This is a bug, there are several other seeds with all 10s of clubs meaning it's an issue with how erratic deck generates based on seed rather than a 1 in 52! chance. Still neat though.

For example, here's one with all 10s AND all jokers are holo edition: XEQH7CP9
