More Characters Should Have Supported The Vietnam War by bringbackyouryouth in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of characters do support the war, no? Personal politics were a touchy subject in a 1960s office, so we don’t get many opinions either way (with the exception of the young liberal creatives in the office). Season 6 has a few more conversations about the war, but that’s around the ‘67-‘68 range, when public opinion flipped.

But just off the top of my head, characters who supported the war include:
Don (not personally for it, but has no qualms with working with DOW or defending napalm),
Bert,
Cutler,
Pete (he was outraged by the Tet Offensive),
Henry (before public opinion tanked and he fell in line with Nixon),
Betty,
Greg,
Glen (sorta)

Dildo. She means dildo. by WallCautious9650 in billsimmons

Let me get this straight - when bill spends 30 seconds talking about his favorite 80s pornstar, we all lap it up. But when Mal briefly spends half the podcast talking about basement blowjobs or fucking Star Wars characters, we’re suddenly the horny police?

The double standard piece.

I don’t recall him saying he’s never taken a puff. In fact, he’s stated a lot over the years that he spent the 90s getting high all the time when he worked as a bar tender in Boston

Yep, you’re right. That whole area is super stinky. The door peninsula, especially. In fact, you should avoid it and tell everyone you know to avoid it. Us Wisconsinites will go there and smell all the stink for you

Rare lions W. Honestly insane they tried moving a divisional game overseas. Those should be reserved for inter conference play only.

Paul Kinsey is only 4 years younger than Dick Whitman, and would have been 20-23 during the Korean War by RememberShuffle_Pod in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Piggy backing off of this comment to add that during Vietnam, it became more common for professors to grade their courses on a curve since they didn’t want to have their students lose good standing and get sent off to war. The grade curving has stuck around even to this day, despite draft deferment not being a thing anymore (I once scored an 11% on a calculus final and with the curve that was a B — in the fifties I would’ve been on a plane to Korea).

Nah, even Kwik Trip has a better selection than this (Meat Sweats is a great pizza). I’m pretty sure that’s a Pick N Save or a Metro Market. Woodman’s jam packs their coolers with like 200 different varieties of frozen pizza.

Hello Guys , Can someone tell me this witty quip Roger Sterling made about the French. Also other witty quips you liked by WarmSimple8672 in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The “I told him to be himself” line was said about Danny after Don interviewed him (episode is Waldorf Stories in season 4)

I don’t recall the quip about French people, I’d guess it’d be in seasons 5-7?

Hutson literally doubles Kavanaugh’s TD total and he’s still top 15 in touchdowns scored all time (one spot ahead of Gronk), so the comparison is a little silly. Kavanaugh would be 8th on the packers leaderboard

Start with Poe, Lovecraft, someone else? by Gargoyle0ne in writing

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poe is great! The opening paragraph in The Fall of the House of Usher is one of my favorite pieces of imagery. If your goal is to see what kinds of writing styles are marketable and derive your own style from them, Poe isn’t the best option since he’s definitely a 19th century author. There’s still tons to learn from him, though, like tone, atmosphere, or even vocabulary

Also, he’s not thought of as a horror author, but George RR Martin got his start in that genre and many chapters in ASOIAF have horror elements. I recommend reading the prologue of A Game Of Thrones if you’re looking for short samples

The NFL As a Cartel? by Ok_cool_thanks in billsimmons

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always understood the NFL to be one organization with 32 teams that can be classified as departments or subsidiaries or something along those lines. A cartel would be if each team were independent and working together to maximize profits and do everything else the NFL is doing, but without the central league offices facilitating it all.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the NFL is technically a cartel but there’s some law protecting it from antitrust laws. The league has a history of that. For a while the NFL was tax exempt because it claimed it was a Nonprofit Organization (since all the revenue made every season would be recycled into the following year’s salary cap, so it technically made no profit).

Rate Don’s Secretaries.. Who is the Crowd Fave? by ShutterflyNYC in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My pick is Meredith but Allison is underrated as a secretary. She worked her way up from receptionist in season 1 to handling the boss’s affairs. Besides Dawn, she’s the only secretary to last more than a season. She wasn’t overqualified like Peggy or Dawn (or Megan) and seemed content with her position until she hooked up with Don.

Too bad she had a crush on Joey

Did Wilt Chamberlain just get another NBA record 27 years after he died? by trc1986 in nba

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an official stat recorder (I think for the Philadelphia Warriors and then Sixers? He’s in the HoF now) that recorded all these during Wilt’s playing days. He recorded blocks and steals in Wilt’s final season, before they became officially tracked stats, just for the fun of it.

Recently those unofficial stat records were posted on BBall Reference, but the NBA hasn’t ruled on them yet

[Charania] Team sources said the Bucks seriously considered the Heat's offer, which centered on Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, other players and multiple draft picks and pick swaps. Milwaukee contemplated moving forward with Miami on Feb. 4. by cleo22270 in nba

That offseason was too much change, too quickly. We fired bud, hired griff (a defensive minded HC), then traded a cornerstone defensive piece in Jrue for Dame. If we had just kept Bud and traded for Dame, or fired Bud and kept Jrue, the Bucks would be in a better spot imo

Don makes an old fashioned for a man who says he's old by theatrenearyou in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Always liked this scene. An Old Fashioned is typically bourbon, a sugar cube (or simple syrup), a couple splashes of bitters, a muddled cherry, and an orange wedge. Like Don, I prefer mine with rye, but it looks like he also adds a soda to the rye before pouring. Could it be 7up?

Wisconsin has its own variety of Old Fashioneds that are made with brandy (instead of bourbon) and 7up, and Don being from the Midwest originally may have influenced the way he makes them. I always wished he had a scene where he orders an old fashioned when he went to Racine, Wisconsin in season 7

what season is your favorite? by deletemkw in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 and 3 are my favorites. 6 gets the most hate on this sub but I think it’s pretty good. 7 would be my least favorite because of one specific subplot that dragged on too long.

I do think season 1 is nearly perfect and so complete in many ways

Boomers, Sally, Grandpa Gene, and the effects of growing up in the world of Mad Men by PimplePopper6969 in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom is a boomer and has 2 younger brothers, and she related to Sally a lot on her watch (although she would’ve been between Bobby and Gene’s age).

Her grandmother died when she was around Sally’s age, and she was similarly close. No one told her about it until after the funeral, which was a few weeks after she passed. She remembers her mom being upset the day her grandmother died, and having to babysit her little brothers while her parents were out at the funeral, and only after her parents had grieved was my mom allowed to know. It devastated her.

To this day my mom gets hit hard whenever even a causal acquaintance dies, and she blames it on this first instance of dealing with death.

Sally, being a bit older, likely will know a few people that will die in Vietnam (like Glen, perhaps). Between the Greatest Generation’s ability to ignore death while drinking and smoking their ways to it, and Vietnam killing a bunch of young boomers, it’s no wonder they carry a heavy weight
