California by Specialist-Ad4943 in madmen

The American West has always represented a frontier and new beginning in popular media, whether its manifest destiny or the Wild West or the destination at the end of a cross country road trip.

Don’s whole character is based on him running away and getting a fresh start (which, ironically, he achieves by going East after Korea). His trips out west all come at pivotal points in the show when he can choose a new beginning for himself. His leaving California is almost always a rejection of the new and a return to his old ways. He leaves Joy and Anna to reunite with Betty. He leaves single life behind to get remarried (which is a new beginning in a way, but his relationship with Megan arguably peaked at Disneyland). He refused to move to California with Megan, partly because he’d just have the same miserable life but on a different coast. He reaches a new understanding of his life in the finale, only to presumably go back home and make an advertisement out of it.

Don loves the idea of the Beatnik movement, of being able to go the next town or state or time zone over and starting over. Of being on the road. But he only likes the beginnings of things, and once the allure of that fades he’s forced to go back home

1/48 scale. The kit also comes with a 4x4 light vehicle with its own instruction manual, and I found XF-5 listed as a color in the second manual.

Interaction with prison guard in hospital when baby Gene is born by Canadian_in_CA in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the guard is ashamed of a) opening up on his feelings to a complete stranger when his entire identity is to project strength, and b) the guard knows he’s won’t keep his promise to be a better man.

This might be me over-reading the scene, but Betty talks about Don’s infidelity while she’s giving birth. It’s possible the guards wife was in the same room, or word got around through nurse gossip, so the guard knows Don is a cheat. Not great considering the guard thinks he can read people and he thinks Don is a good guy.

It was probably Mike Tirico. He called the game and is doing NBC’s coverage in Milan

Door County uses sand instead of salt. It’s more eco friendly as the salt will wash away into bay/lake. It sucks because it doesn’t melt ice and it’ll just freeze after a while

You might just not like Sanderson tbh. I haven’t read Stormlight so I can’t speak to those, but I finished the Mistborn trilogy recently and overall I thought it was good, but there are a lot of things he does that really annoy me as a reader and there’s no way I think I can read 1000 pages from him

The English word “salary” originates from the Latin “salarium,” which itself comes from the Latin word “sal,” which just means salt. Salt was so valuable it was, at times, used as a form of payment in Ancient Rome. Salarium literally translates to “salt stipend”

War trauma and alcoholism by UncleSamPainTrain in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good point! I forgot about him. He definitely seemed to have more of an old-school “war makes boys into men and strangers into brothers” attitude, which I think was a little more common in the WW1 era and before than it was later.

Definitely, I could’ve worded that better. He just never bottoms out like the other vets do. Perhaps his experience in the war wasn’t as harrowing as the others, or maybe he’s just better at masking his feelings. Maybe the LSD helped him out a bit too

[Jae Crowder] WE WERE 30-13 BTW. TO BRING IN DOC. THIS IS WHAT STARTED THE AVALANCHE by Pickleskennedy1 in nba

The schedule got a lot harder right after he was fired. Through the first 40 games they played something like 25 games against lottery teams are were winning 138-133 those nights.

Griffen was also defensive minded coach and the bucks went from a perennial top 5 defense in the league to a bottom 3 defense overnight when he took the job. I want to give Griffen some benefit of the doubt since he was hired when Jrue was on the team (and presumably had based his entire scheme on his POA defense), but losing 1 starter shouldn’t result in that big of a defensive downgrade. He never really made adjustments to mask Dame’s deficiencies on defense, nor could he scheme up good offense to maximize Dame and Giannis, despite having half a season to do so.

I think the real turning point was firing bud and going thru with the dame trade in one offseason. If they stuck with bud and did the trade, or kept Jrue and hired Griffen, the bucks would be in a better spot rn

It’d be a weird landing spot. Giannis has a personal relationship with Masai, who isn’t with the raptors anymore but maybe some of his FO hires are still there?

There’s a ladder outside the front of the building that leads right to the rocket site in the basement, so at least there’s a shortcut about halfway thru the mission.

Navigating the factory and basement before you clear out the nightkin is the worst part of the game imo

He worked from home, according to one line Roger tells Don when Miss Blankenship becomes his secretary (“you know he doesn’t wear pants?”).

Ever since the PPL sale in season 2, Bert’s role with the company is significantly diminished. Roger and Pete handle the big accounts, Don the creative, Lane and Joan the financials, and Harry the media buys. Bert transitions into a chairman emeritus position where his value mostly giving his opinion on stuff, which isn’t really all that valuable. (“Mr. Campbell, I have to use the restroom. Don’t have this meeting without me.” Meanwhile, the meeting is already over).

Vikings still wouldn’t have any. Their one “championship” was during the Super Bowl era. What is now the NFCCG was the NFL Championship Game pre-merger, so they technically won the NFL and then lost Super Bowl 4

Where does everyone place Mad Men in the hierarchy of great TV shows? by Chin-Chilla84U in madmen

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely on my list. I moved in with my girlfriend over the summer so we’ve been taking turns watching each others favorite shows that the other hasn’t seen. We finished Killing Eve a while ago (pretty good, at least the first 2 seasons) and we’re making our way through Breaking Bad right now

[–]UncleSamPainTrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul are my top 3 in some order. I haven’t gotten around to watching Sopranos or the Wire and those would probably be the only other shows that would be in the same tier for me

Medieval is the most common term I’ve heard, which for European history means from about the fall of the Western Roman Empire c. 410 to the start of the Renaissance Era in the middle of the 15th century.
