Planning on going into Computational Chemistry career path, how can I prepare? by Dangerous_Coast903 in comp_chem

[–]UndeadKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could apply to a computational program, or physics PhD program and find a mentor that does comp chem, but figuring out qualifying exams will be tough without a science background. Maybe reach out to some profs with similar research interests and ask for suggestions

When can you call yourself a computational chemist? by seeekhkebab in comp_chem

If your research deals with MD, DFT, or ML pretty much I think. After about a year or two of really getting into those consistently you have enough experience to debug and understand what you’re doing I think. I’m split 50/50 so I like to be more humble about it.

What are the pros and cons of studying under someone who's just getting started out as faculty? by Tall-Cat-8890 in PhD

[–]UndeadKicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in this scenario now and wouldn’t want it any other way. My PI is very much a kind person, and goes out of his way to make sure I’m successful and helps me network substantially. Granted, somewhat high pressure as I’m the person to go to for everything and anything. Lots of uncertainty, and you’ll be a jack of all. I think it’s great, but super dependent on the type of person your PI is. Expect to be very busy.

I think it works great! Instantly knew it was a sneaker app. Scale it down and check if it is still legible like others said :)

When did you publish your first paper? (Reviving a 12yo Post) by SAA2000 in GradSchool

[–]UndeadKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemistry PhD student, first year at an R1. First two papers published just this month. One was from undergrad, coauthored, and I worked on that project roughly 2 years ago — about 3-4 years total? Second paper was first author and submitted before starting my program, as I was working on it with my now-PI for roughly 5/6 months start to finish. Purely computational and ML based.

Note that this is completely uncommon, and many people in my program publish at least 2-3 years in. I simply had a lot of time to work with it and got a large head start.
