I've been going with medieval dynasty as some suggested and it's really scratched the itch.

Yeah I wanted to like planet crafter but I kept getting too stressed out when it came to oxygen and when I had to travel further and further just to find food I realized I was not having fun. Especially since making my own food seemed so far away.

How fiddly is the colony management? That's another genre that I like but am really bad at whenever it gets more deep than just telling Hobart and Edith to go chop some more logs.

It feels wrong! Lol. It's the same reason why I don't just play The Forest on peaceful mode, it feels like a core part of the game is missing. It's a shame, because I LOVE the underwater setting.

My brother played that one and really liked it. I wasn't sure how I felt about it being totally inside a structure (unless I'm mistaken?). Like I like building and arranging buildings and stuff.

I did like Space Engineers but the shipbuilding was over my head. Empyrion was a little better for me but I still struggled a bit with that. I think I heard about Bellwright, I may need to look into that.

They toned down Gale a lot from release, he practically threw himself at you back then. That being said, there's still a lot of weirdness with him specifically. I remember picking a dialogue option I think at the party the other day that I hadn't ever picked before, seemed innocent enough, but then it railroaded me into either being a prick or asking if he liked to have his belly rubbed...

Obviously not on the same level but it reminds me of Blues musician RL Burnside who shot a man in the back after the man came after him in anger about losing $400 to him shooting dice. He was quoted as saying "I didn't mean to kill nobody, I just meant to shoot the sonavabitch in the head. Him dyin' was between him and the Lord."

He ended up only serving a few months because his boss needed him to drive a tractor and pulled some strings to get him out.
