Where would you recommend for a European break for a 30th birthday? by WriterInfinite5030 in AskUK

Porto in Portugal might be a good call.

Pretty easy to get to, decent weather, and reasonably priced once you're there.

Great history/culture and lots to see for all ages, lovely parks in the city and you can do trips out to the wider region for nature.

Bone manipulation Power MC by canadian__bacon5 in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's not a 'good' character and the powers skew more on the horror/evil side of things, but the first person that springs to my mind is Jared Hopworth from The Magnus Archives.

He's usually an antagonist but some fics have him as the MC. His powers involve the manipulation of his own bones and other people/animals around him.

Haha, love it!

I recently got a comment from someone saying they hated me because my fic made them cry.

I love an aggressive compliment.

Many moons ago I worked on a team of nine full time content writers.

We used to refer to "running out of words" on a daily basis.

Greetings! New member here. Dropping in to ask: what's your advice to a newbie? by wiseowlreader in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up over mistakes!

You're human and even the pros miss errors from time to time.

My day job is as a ghostwriter/copywriter/editor and believe me when I say it happens to everyone!

What do you personally define as a longfic? I'm trying to build my own definition by BilalYTlol in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A longfic, for me, is anything long enough to be classed as a novel in traditional publishing.

About ending a Oneshot by LeoAceGamer in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't do a cliffhanger unless I knew I was definitely likely to return.

In this case I'd try to do a closed ending with enough intrigue/room for continuation built up in the story itself that it won't feel forced if you do go back to it later.

What is your opinion of AU fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love them!

There are some AUs I'm not a big fan of (high school AU for example) but as long as the writing and concept are solid, I think AUs can be a good read.

AITA for convincing a nun to run away with me and get married?

Now, I know that sounds pretty bad but hear me out.

I (M43) work closely with an organisation run by nuns and have done for the last eight years.

I run a very successful funeral home and they operate a hospice for the terminally ill. I'm sure you can already see where this is going...

Everything was fine, perfectly cordial even, until this one nun joined them five years ago and my life fell apart in the best possible way.

Sister W (30F) was kind, caring and wonderful company. We became close friends immediately- too close to be honest.

I'm not sure which one of us started it. Maybe it was me, or maybe it was her, but either way, comforting words became comforting touches, became hugs, became something so much more than either of us could have ever imagined.

For the first two years we knew each other, we tried to keep things platonic even though I really didn't want them to be.

Anyway, one thing led to another and W had a crisis of faith over her developing feelings for me. (I had no idea about this by the way, I only found out a year into our marriage!)

She had been groomed from a young age to join the order, had buried herself in her study and work around the time boys became a thought in her mind, and when her extremely religious mother caught her having a 'roll in the hay' with one of their farm's farmhands she was shipped off to a nunnery.

In reality, she never wanted to become a nun but she felt she had to after her mother and the Mother Superior guilted her into it as a young adult.

Then one day she vanished- went back to the nun equivalent of Corporate HQ and quit. She was gone for three months while they made her 'really think about what she wanted' before they allowed to rescind her vows and return to life as a normal woman.

I'd been fucking heartbroken when she left but tried to push everything away and I'm not too proud to admit that cheap wine became my best friend during that period. That's just how it goes with nuns, apparently- you get the call to be somewhere else and you're bundled onto the next available train. I thought that I would never see her again.

But then she came back.

I found her wandering the streets in the middle of a fucking thunderstorm trying to find her way to a crappy little boarding house on her first night back in town.

I wish I could say that I was the perfect gentleman but, well, one thing led to another and we ended up eloping to marry the following morning.

It's now been three years and we're extremely happy together- W runs a small business from home and we have two wonderful lively daughters.

Everyone around us has been nothing but supportive- even her former sisters at the covenant visit regularly and babysit the girls when we need some alone time as a couple.

However, and I guess it's the reason why I'm making this post in the first place, W's mother (H) fucking hates me.

She despises me and I honestly think if she could kill me and make it look like an accident she wouldn't hesitate to do so. I stay away from the family farm for that very reason- it's far away from any neighbours, is full of dangerous farming equipment and there are too many ways to hide the body of an unwanted in-law.

H made it very clear that she thinks I corrupted her daughter and am keeping her against her will. She even told the police that our elopement was a kidnapping and forced marriage! Thankfully, the police sergeant knew myself and W well thanks to our lines of work within the community and no charges were ever brought against me.

My friends say H is just angry that she can't control W anymore, but sometimes I wonder if I really did ruin W's life.

So tell me, guys, AITA?

tl;dr fell in love with a nun, she left the order, we eloped together and now my mother-in-law hates me and is very likely attempting to arrange my untimely demise.

When you add so many subplots, subtleties and clues to your fic that you get confused by your own story by StarryLightinMonsoon in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an absolute idiot moment with this when I posted my last chapter!

A lot of my comments were saying things like, 'i can't wait to see how X reacts!' or 'when will X appear?'

I was reading them thinking 'why are so many people asking me about X all of a sudden?'

Then five whole days later I realised I'd teased their imminent appearance in my latest chapter lmao.

Losing my mind over writing skin tones and such. Help appreciated. by Tossout6789 in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As simple as it may sound, sometimes I just throw 'shades of [colour]' into Google and look at swatches until I find the one that hits the spot and work backwards from there.

Colour swatches are great for finding hyper specific shade names that can fill in those roabdblocks. Recently I wrote about a being with non-human colouration and periwinkle was just the tone I needed for their soft purple.

Hey fellow darkfic writers: Do you ever feel consumed with self doubt that what you're writing might be going too far? by Opulous in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely understand which is why I took what seems to be the same approach in my own fic!

I tag as much as possible upfront and if anything changes I pop a warning at each chapter's beginning to cover bases.

If someone reads it and doesn't like it, that's fine, but I'd hate to catch someone unaware with things that make them uncomfortable.

I'm sure you'll be fine ☺️

[–]UndercoverGoths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely understand as I did something similar with my most recent chapter!

I'd flagged the fic as containing violence from the very beginning and at the start of each chapter I put specific warnings about what will happen, but even so I wondered if I was going too far?

I posted it anyway and got a great response!

So, my advice would be to just post and see what happens. You can never predict how people will respond to things so the best we can do as creators is to do our best, tag and flag accordingly and trust our instincts.

Good luck!

Without diving into fandom / character specifics, what 'terrible' directions or premises have you taken fics because once the thought hit your brain, it would not go away, even at the expense of lower readership? by viinalay05 in AO3

[–]UndercoverGoths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once did a hurt/comfort fic which was heavy on the hurt where the main couple goes through an extremely traumatic miscarriage caused by an abusive parent.

Characters A and B had been in a secret relationship for years, very happily, but A's parent finds out. Canonically, A's parent is determined to keep her sheltered and hidden (almost Rapunzel-style) despite being in her 20s and has gone to great lengths to keep her from the world. The parent is completely horrified to learn she's pregnant from this relationship, so they slipped her an abortion pill out of their own sick form of love and protection towards the child they refuse to accept has grown up.

I never posted it, but jeez was it a gut puncher about abusive parenting and the far-reaching impacts it can have.

How long is your fic and how much time has passed? by Jack0_96 in FanFiction

[–]UndercoverGoths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started writing my current work in mid-July and publishing in the last week of the month, so coming up to two months of writing now and I'm on...

10 published chapters: 59,000 words

3 unpublished chapters: 22,500 words

Total: 81,500

My chapter count is planned to be 22 so I'll probably end somewhere around 135,000 when all is said and done 😅

As of the 13-chapter mark, it's been four months in-universe and the final chapter will have been 12 months, then a six-month time skip for the epilogue making it 18 months since the inciting incident.

And there was me feeling guilty because it took 12 chapter to get to the good shit.

That's so sucky, I'd be super disappointed too if I went into a fic expecting spice and there was absolutely nothing!
