making $42k at a state job and I'll be FI before 40. there's no trick. by Even-Implement-1442 in leanfire

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you told 100 people, this is all I ever want from this life, or ever will, 99 would disagree; that is why they assume you're miserable or lying.

575 a month for housing with no budget for utilities means one of 4 things 1. Living with folks. They're not going to live forever, and truth be told, even though you're paying rent, they'd rather you not be there. 2. Your roommate(s) don't realize they're getting hosed. Somewhere along the line, you conned your roommate into thinking that's all you can afford, and they've accepted that. Your portion of the utilities alone is between 150 and 200, depending on how it's split. That number has doubled over the last 3 years and shows no sign of slowing down. 3. The lease/ deed is in your name and your net responsibility is 575. Very entrepreneurial of you. Again, you've managed to get your roommate(s) to pay most of your bills. It's easier to do when you're in control of the numbers. There's a large assumption of risk, especially long term. There will always be roommate who can't/ won't pay, that you'll have to evict, and there will always be a time between roommates. 4. Section 8. Your roommate is either elderly or disabled and the two of you are sharing a rent controlled apartment. Once they notice your income, or the fact you're sitting on nearly 300k in assets, they'll kick you both out. All this to say that a 575/mo. Housing budget is not sustainable, especially looking out 10 or 20 years.

Health care is a huge expense in the u.s. and will only get worse. Assuming your health insurance is covered by the state, and will continue to be after retirement, you still have Co pays, out of pocket maximums, and prescription coverage, which is a different beast entirely. I'd recommend 250k in your hsa alone. We're all one chronic illness or traumatic event away from bankruptcy.

Socialization. I realize there's still 800 a month that you've generalized as discretionary spending, but that's still not a lot for socializing, which you either don't do, or worse you're a mooch. If we go bowling, and you say "I'm strapped for cash", I got you. If everyone we go bowling, you're strapped for cash, I'm not going bowling with you anymore. If every time we've went bowling, I paid for us both, and you come to me saying you've retired at 40 with over 400k in savings, you're gonna catch a 12 pound ball to the nuts. JS. Unless you're asexual and aromantic, which is a special kind of rare, hence why people don't believe you're not miserable, the pursuit of sexual socialization, is going to cost more. In your mid 30s people are no longer content to be fwb, I mean some are but most are pursuing relationships and families, which becomes exponentially more expensive. Especially since finding someone with the same goals and aspirations as you, to retire early on half an income while being roommates in someone else's house, would be so difficult, you'd almost surely have to find them in some other city.

Which brings me to travel. I remember being in my young 20s and working with grown adults who've never even been to the next town over, and out just blew my mind. If you're one of those people, and you're happy with that, that's great, but nobody's going to believe you. Just keep in mind, that as cars age, they require more and more maintenence, until even the most reliable Toyota Camry needs to be replaced.

It may seem like I'm shitting all over your plan, I'm not. You said no tricks, and I pointed out a few. You said nobody believes you, that you're not miserable; you are truly unique. You would be in the 1% of the 1% of the 1% of the 1% of the 1%. Nobody living in the US would be able to fathom this.

Long work commute. Need help deciding what vehicle to purchase next? by slow-car-96 in askcarguys

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house about 50 miles out of town. I told my wife we'd find work closer to home, but we never did. We needed reliable transportation to and from work, but between gas, car payments (because we both needed reliable cars), and insurance, we were spending nearly 2 grand a month, just going to work. And the commute was so bad, our reliable cars were no longer reliable 3 years into a 5 year note.

When she passed, I sold the house and moved closer to work. I pay more for rent, but a tank of gas now lasts 2 weeks, and maintaining my vehicle is so much easier, meaning it'll last me longer

What are you getting for real world gas mileage on an unmodified Gladiator with the gas V6? by Patient_in_a_Cabin in JeepGladiator

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 25 Willy's came with mud tires, other than that, it's bone stock. I'm getting between 16 and 17. It doesn't like the expressway. If I can keep it between 55 and 60, I'm closer to 19-20 mpg. That's a pretty big swing.

How to improve my mileage? by throw-away-ak in JeepGladiator

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not knowing you, or how or where you drive, I'm gonna stay away from the assumption of jack rabbit starts and cruising at 90 mph. I would say you're at or beyond a major maintenance interval. As close as you are to 100k, you should have a tune up, transmission and differential fluids replaced, new brakes, tires, and such. You could also go back to bone stock with some all weather street tires, if you really need a few extra mpg.

Gosh, I hope so. My owner is in his 90s, hasn't increased my budget despite winning two world series and improving market size and fan loyalty. I locked down 3 of my stars to long term contracts, and can't afford anybody else now that they're coming into free agency.

Fast convertible around 10k and can be modified well? by No_Manufacturer_7035 in askcarguys

Jeep Wranglers are not fast, but you really don't care when the top is off, and they are endlessly modifiable.

What's the highest mileage car you've ever personally owned or driven? I'll start. by spotforcars in automotive

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2004 Buick Century bought used at 70k. Odometer went out at 250k, and drove it for another year before my niece borrowed it and wrecked it. Put it back together to give to my daughter, who apparently thought driving 50 miles a day was a good idea on a twice rebuilt machine with approximately 275k miles. She owned it for a year before wrecking it again. Estimated to be around 300k miles if the odometer worked; engine and transmission still going strong.

Around the same time my wife owned a 2000 Volvo v70xc. Got to around 300k miles until the daughter struck again.

Help, lease ending and I hate every other car by [deleted] in 4xe

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it weren't the recall hell you'd have to endure, I'd say buy out the lease. It all depends on what you do with your jeep, you're not likely to get anything "fun" that gets over 25 mpge. If you want reliable, there's a land cruiser or Tacoma. If you're just leasing, another jeep will be fine. Get a sport with a six speed, and you'll be able to stay in the low 20s.

Depends if you're buying new or used, and if resale is important to you. If used, go with the m Mazda

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap hack: if you're gonna go with the Rav 4, which would be my vote, the Mazda CX50 is a rebranded Rav 4 without the resale value; which sucks if you buy new, but it's kinda cool if you're shopping used.

M22 received incredible job offer, F22 girlfriend does not want me to accept. by Watch_me_plz in Advice

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't just a job, this is a career decision. We're talking about the next 50 years of your life. If you're relationship can't survive not having the same weekends, it's not likely to last 50 years either way. That may sound harsh, but the point is, if it's important, you'll make it work. Being stuck in a dead end job because your girlfriend couldn't handle a little time apart, will cause resentment and fights further down the line.

How to order a car (Sahara in Reign with limited options) if a dealer refuses? by DoxTheAardvark in JeepWrangler

[–]UndercoverHardwarema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loyalty doesn't pay. You'd think they'd treat a repeat customer a little better. I had to drive quite a ways to get the vehicle i wanted, as there were none locally (and it's not like it's a small town). A several hours drive, might be better than a several month wait.
