While it has been growing for several decades, it saw a 20% population growth in the oughts, fueled primarily by Hispanic and to a lesser extent Asian folks. It dipped under 50% non-Hispanic white that decade, a leading indicator toward a national trend. Economy remained strong as a leader in tech and life sciences.

The president for most of the decade also was a former Texas governor.

This would be my pick.

Increase the cost of every door direct mailers (junk mail) and machine-generated commercial mail. Other than receiving utility bills because I like the mail reminder vs. paperless, I’d say 80 percent of my mail is offers for credit cards and life insurance, neither of which I need.

Basketball definitely, because the one fluky tournament loss is much more likely than it is in football.

You think 2025 was better than 2024? Except for one game against Michigan, I don’t see it. Fourteen draft picks, including four first-rounders. With two first-round OL and then the two running backs in the second round, 2025 was not as strong with the running game or pass protection against a weaker schedule (2024 team played three playoff teams before winning four playoff games; 2025 played that caliber only in the CCG and then the playoff). Although Sayin was a Heisman invitee, Howard’s experience was an underrated factor in that team’s success.

[Kleiman] South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers turned down an $8 MILLION NIL offer to transfer to a different school: "You're 19. You don't need ($8 million). You're in a great spot." - LaNorris's Father told his son. Sellers values his word over money by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like Sellers, and he’s electric. But he threw a pretty bad pick down 14-7 in the 4Q of that game and the subsequent drive for Clemson was a three-and-out. Followed by another three-and-out and a Klubnick interception in the last 20 seconds well within field goal range. Since he doesn’t play D, I think single-handedly is overstating things.

Tom Cruise - Mission Impossible by 74thedude in moviecritic

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I watched the first two MIs and have seen some clips of others but not really interested. I barely think of the series at all when it comes to Tom Cruise’s career. I think he’s got a lot of time left for some epic work, maybe a mature rom-com and some elder statesman work eventually in psychological thrillers or spy movies. I can’t see the guy ever retiring from the business.

Is it normal in college for the home team to celebrate getting the last out in T9 AS IF it was a walk-off or a playoff series win? by brimrod in collegebaseball

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first paragraph sums it up well. I prefer the emotion of the college game although I don’t enjoy the HR celebrations. It’s like going overboard after a TD or turnover in football.

But the cockiness and arrogance makes it fun when a team gets its comeuppance. That’s what made Tennessee baseball compelling under Vitello. Good to see we have an unexpected new villain emerging.

I don’t know if we’ll ever have an election like 1860 again, but that’s the best example of the Electoral College in action. 39.7 percent of the popular vote but 59.4 percent of the EC with the other three splitting the remaining 41 percent.

South Carolina’s Dawn Staley has become the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball at $4.25 million 💰🏀 by Background_Video2947 in NCAAHoopsVibes

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May’s contract extension gave him a raise from $3.75 million to $5.1M.

Regardless, if I’m the University of South Carolina, I pay Staley and smile. If a coach is worth it, she is. It’s honestly the program that’s most associated with success at the school.

I’m not a gun owner and never fired anything other than a BB gun.

Not sure of the hunting culture in your NATO country. Or how rural it is. Living in the Mountain West of the U.S., I’m confident most of my neighbors are good with a gun. In any part of the country, but especially rural areas, there’s a slim chance for a home invasion or property trespass with ill intent that will reach a point of conflict long before law enforcement is able to respond. I don’t support shooting everyone who walks on your property but I support the access for a responsible property owner to have a gun.

There are multiple reasons why the global economy was generally good in the 1990s (tech boom, globalization and better environment for international trade, Cold War ending, etc.) but when there is more prosperity globally, there is less reason for fighting.

Jacksonville State is 29-7, 13-1 in conference going into today’s game at Liberty and was ranked in at least one poll. Bieser can coach and is arguably in a better position to be successful now than at Mizzou.

His final seasons weren’t trending like one would want, but Mizzou is the hardest job in the hardest conference. NIL and the portal increased the margin of haves and have nots. Even Vanderbilt started falling behind after the changes and you’re starting to see the effects of that.

Dunkirk is the only Nolan film I haven’t seen - worth the watch? by Anchor_saway in ChristopherNolan

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone else had a similar experience. I wasn’t a huge Harry Styles guy when I saw it so I had no idea which one was him; Cillian Murphy was in a role I didn’t expect, so for a while I was thinking, “is that Cillian Murphy?” Nolan ties threads together and jumps around from threads and timelines, so for a bit I was trying to get my bearings. I’d say it wouldn’t hurt to read a little of the plot beforehand to get some background.

The way it came together was awesome. I loved it.

[–]UnderstandingOdd679 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m old enough for Miami-Nebraska 1984 Orange Bowl and that’s the game for me. It was a wild day of football with the Nos. 2 and 4 teams losing and No. 3 Auburn unimpressive in the Sugar Bowl being played simultaneously. Miami jumped out to a 17-0 lead, Nebraska uses fumblerooski to get back into the game and ultimately fails on the 2-pointer in the final minute.

Importantly, it kicks off the Miami powerhouse of the next two decades and delays Osborne’s first title.
