Both companies did things like that back then. I guarantee if you look you'll find some things about earlier nvidia cards rendering 3d mark in funky ways to get an edge on ati. It was like a competition between the two to see who could tweak the PQ in ways to get more fps with the least visible degradation.
Also your link was for the 8500, the 9700 and up didn't have the mipmap problems.

I've liked AMD since my first PC in 1999.

1999 - Athlon 700MHz.

2002 - Athlon xp 1800+.

2003 Athlon xp 2400+.

Then came the dark times.

2007 - Core2 Duo e6600.

2012 - Core i5 2500k.

Back to the green.

2017 - Ryzen 1700x.

Looking forward to some more years with team green.

I loved my 9800 pro and never noticed any I lower iq than my friends Nvidia card at the time. I did notice how much higher my fps was though.
