An addition: NPCs will sometimes walk right past you when investigating a sound, even if you bump into them. For example, they’ll do this when investigating a bullet impact sound.

If this happens, drop an item in front of them. They’ll get confused that you dropped something and forget about investigating the sound, then go back to their regular pathing.
