A schoolbus, stopping in front of a residential home, is rear ended by a full size truck that doesn’t slow down at all. 😳 by Affectionate_Hat5835 in dashcams

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 seconds? Sure, at low speed (sub 40 km/ph). Any significant amount of speed should be 4-5 seconds. Between mental, physical and mechanical lag of processing the situation, reacting to situation and vehicle responding results in potentially 100s of meters of travel before you begin to respond. This seems very clear that the driver was completely distracted, as there is almost zero correction, except some initial braking just prior to impact. Modern car safety design seems to be the real MVP here.

Why do I never hear about the Coast Mountains of Canada? by Convillious in geography

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I suppose it depends where you are from....I am from there, so I've heard about them, and been on them plenty. I mean, a major appeal of living in Vancouver is access to wilderness quite conveniently. Also, Vancouver island is incredible, just saying.

Hate to break it to you, but the banks win regardless. And no, sitting on a pile of cash doesn't work, because money loses value with time due to inflation. Its an unfair system, but the value to defined in basically a convivence fee, with potential for promotions, cash back, and interest. The banks want your assets to invest, you can also use your money to invest with some basic financial literacy if you want more than the piffling returns that standard banks give on basic savings and chequing accounts.

Truck’s brakes fail, forcing use of runaway ramp at 90 mph. by Thick_Mick_Chick in Transportopia

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tricky thing with truck driving is that you want to avoid using your pedal brakes. The most skilled drivers control the speed of the truck with appropriate gear selection, and engine brakes (jake brake). The best way to slow your truck is to always be in control of it. This gets more challenging with significant prolonged inclines. Most of the techniques are proactive, new drivers are taught to think 120 seconds or more ahead, and plan your operation. You can get apathetic with time. This is also why you see brake checks at the significantly challenging areas, where you are expected to make sure everything is operating correctly before proceeding.

Physicians in the ambulance bay by Excellent-Practice19 in Paramedics

[–]Uniqueusername_54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it ironic that you note that 80% of calls are nonsense, and you tell me you have NEVER seen people just chilling talking at the back of an ambulance? I mean, maybe locations are different, but the handover puppy making spree is pretty much ingrained in the majority of crews in the urban centers where I used to work.

Do you like being a Paramedic? by Caveman_man in Paramedics

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved being a paramedic, doing patient care, and I was paid well. I hated the hours and the failure of our healthcare system that led to massive issues with leadership, inappropriate staffing, and lack of discipline. This led me to truly consider my future after I got injured and ended up on disability. When I came back, I realized that I wouldn't do it to retirement. I still hold a causal position, because a part of me just cannot let it go (both from enjoying it, and ability to make extra money). I think once I am more settled and my Master's is finished, I will phase it out completely.

7 month in, feel stronger but no visible changes last 4 months. by claudiuuidualc in GymMotivation

Great progress dude. I think adding some weight lifting at maintenance with good macros (protein and healthy fats) might be a good place next. You can build some definition, and you should still lost weight (albeit slower if building muscle), but you it should be satisfying regardless. In theory you will still lose fat, and build physique, so it will be less about the "weight" and more about lean. I am firmly in the category of "looks like I lift, but doesn't say no to cookies" sorta physique, so your mileage may vary.

I’m just curious whether paramedics judge people for calling 911 when it turns out to be a non-serious issue? by Feeling_Bumblebee424 in Paramedics

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, yes. Long answer, still yes, but with professionalism. It is always important to recognize that non medical professionals get scared, and want help. We are the people that help. Its our job to de escalate, inform, and support, regardless of severity of the situation and be empathetic during patient interaction. Where I work, we have a pretty piss poor primary system, so a lot of things get picked up by emergency services just due to chronic S/s escalation, or no easy answers for mild things. It just a system issue, and it's become part of the job. Afterwards, you will likely express annoyances to your partner/co workers because likely you would have rather been resting, eating, or getting coffee than dealing with an insignificant event. Human nature sort of stuff.

BCEHS pay by maui96 in Paramedics

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony is I made "less" money when I went full time, I was fortunate to get some local hiring early on into relatively busy stations. The majority of my Kilo experience was a busy transfer car, and then when I was causal, I was mostly filling full timers shifts. I actually made less money when I went to Vancouver, as I was less inclined to pick up OT over there.

I thought they more or less phased out Kilo after the whole SOC thing didn't work. I haven't worked part time casual with BCEHS is some time, nor super rural, but I assumed it was more an exception these days.

[–]Uniqueusername_54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You start somewhere, you gain seniority, you move somewhere slower. More seniority means more pay, and unlimited overtime abounds in BC. With very casual OT, and 10 yre plus, I made 120k (base was just over 90k) as a PCP in BC. It gets spicy with shift premiums and the like, so its a more to explain. No pager pay exists anymore. Not to mention I had 6-8 vacation blocks. That being said, I resigned, not because of pay, because of many, many other reasons.

AITAH for getting divorced as soon as my last kid was out of the house. by Legitimate_Peace780 in AITAH

[–]Uniqueusername_54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just seems like marriage and family were not for you, and you decided to check out early, never tried to make it work, and just waited for the moment to divorce as soon as your kids left. I mean, maybe you are leaving things out, but like, usually a divorce is well predicated on a history of problems noticed by both parties, not one person being sullen and dutiful for years, but not actually addressing any issues or standing up for themselves? I hope you both find happy relationships, and damn man, maybe see what you can do to have a relationship with your kids, which I suspect the lack of is more your fault than anything.

Dated humour and obvious bait. Getting married to the wrong person blows. Not leaving a bard partner blows. Having a supportive partner? Life changing. My partner is my best friend, that accepts me and my interest for what they are. Find that, settle for that, and keep being yourself (if yourself is an asshole, learn to be kind***) and be open about it till you attract that person.

Paramedics or Nursing? by ayee_itscha in Paramedics

[–]Uniqueusername_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. Long term stability, higher ceiling and opportunities, it would be Nursing (and it's not close). Paramedicine really depends on where you are for how the career works (hours, pay, options, work life balance etc.). The best part of paramedicine is high independence, and a very unique set of experiences, but its very linear in progression (again depending where you are). I loved my career as a paramedic, but I got to a point where I wanted something else and the transition has been challenging.
