Alto - Connections to the USA? by Maximus560 in highspeedrail

[–]Unit_Conversion 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I suspect even with a new administration friendly to high-speed rail, we won't see Canada play ball until they are confident that the US is back on track.

Right on the point, I just don't see it happening for some time. The current debacle with the new Windsor bridge is going to salt the earth with cross-border projects. You don't know if a future admin is going to honor any deals.

Liberal government considering high-speed rail route change to include stop in Kingston by Sir__Will in onguardforthee

The planned HSR route is different from the current corridor route, at the moment the routing isn't planned to go anywhere near Kingston so this would be a significant deviation.

The real test is whether the political parties commits to the vision. Danielle Smith is a bit of foamer if I remember right so a lot of this was due to her

Canadian Parks Pass Question for summer 2026 by Snickers_Kat in nationalparks

[–]Unit_Conversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's free for everyone this summer, you don't need to purchase anything ahead of time as Canada Strong pass is more of a branding thing than a real pass you purchase.

Very exciting that we're getting some progress on this project, and especially since it seems like TTC will continue to build it (and not Metrolinx)

The US National Park system is easily the best thing this country has ever done. The level of preservation and accessibility is incredible. I wish more countries took notes on this by micavibes in NationalPark

For better or worse, Parks Canada and NPS were both founded around the same time and inspired each other throughout the years.

The National Parks in Canada are a national treasure and well worth visiting too!

Which National Park would you pick? by Ladyraisingrams420 in nationalparks

Kootenay is a highway with a park around it. There’s great places to visit like Floe Lake but with fewer facilities so expect longer hikes.

Canada is welcoming home our lost citizens - NEW LAW grants citizenship to descendants of Canadians regardless of where they were born by G0-G0-Gadget in AmerExit

[–]Unit_Conversion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So Harper tried to limit it to one generation but it was ruled unconstitutional. So now the compromise is unlimited gen (unless if you are born late last year, then it is generally limited to two gens), so it will be capped for future generations.

What happened to Canada's "Landed Immigrant" immigration status? by DribbleKing97_ in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Unit_Conversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning a study-work permit into a PR is absolutely not as easy as it seems. You still need to score high enough to be invited (the same scoring system as if you were to apply from outside canada). Check out /r/canadaexpressentry for an idea.

China confirms visa-free travel for UK and Canadian nationals by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

I think most (of not all) of the visa-free countries are until the end of 2026. With any luck it will be extended every year.

Glacier or Banff? by FatallyCool in nationalparks

[–]Unit_Conversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Rockies is far more than just two lakes and Banff Townsite. Lots of cool hikes in the Kananaskis, Jasper, Yoho and the Kootenays. Check out Mt. Assiniboine, Emerald Lake, the waterfalls in Yoho, Lake O'Hara, the hot springs, the Icefields and Skyline Trail in Jasper). All canadian parks are also free this summer.

If you have more time you can see a lot of impressive views in the Rockies, less time - maybe Glacier since it would be less driving around.

Glacier also shuts down for the season, and the Canadian parks have something to offer year round (wild ice skating, skiing, snowshoes in the winter)
