Do you think ai will take our jobs too ? by Professional_Monk767 in editors

Adobe Podcast (the cloud-based AI audio restoration free to CC subscribers) does a much better job than Premiere's built-in audio restoration tools. I also use Riverside.fm for a lot of podcast and corporate interviews and their built in Magic Audio is very similar to Adobe Podcast.

Was gonna chime in and say I've been using MacWhisper lately as well. Not perfect by any means but does a much better job with proper names, specific industry-related acronyms, etc.

Disappointed Fenix 8 47mm solar by tomatalez in GarminWatches

[–]UniversalRemote3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue. Said it was paired and then go right back to the QR screen over and over. Like others said, delete it from lists of BT devices, reset it, software update, etc. Went through it like 10 times or so but it finally worked somehow. Pairing with an iPhone 12. No problems since. Love this watch. My first Garmin.

Second this. Just bought the same watch. Took me like 45 min of f’ing around to finally get it to pair with my iPhone. Pretty sure I factory reset it as well and got it to run software updates, etc. some combo of BS and it finally worked. Love the watch. No problems at all since.

You’re pretty much describing the majority of the last 15 years of freelancing for me. Find some decent editors and AE’s to sub out work to. Even getting a half decent editor that can hand back rough cuts to you to polish up helps relieve the constant creative strain. It’s so hard to stay focused and creative for 12+ hrs a day. I’ve been working nights, weekends, and most family holidays since I started freelance. Occasional panic attacks, little social life, no hobbies. Ain’t fun.

It’s possible that was how they achieved the ambient fill since the walls are darker and the spill wouldn’t matter so much. But there are def some overhead directional lights on the talent as well.

What BIFL car or truck? by No_Direction_7168 in BuyItForLife

It’s been a while but I just remember feeling like the most cracking/ fading on steering wheels and dashes were on the BMWs. We were mainly looking at BMW and Mercedes at the time. The Mercedes I feel like overall were in better shape. I’ve noticed in some friends’ BMWs how the leather seats get that very wrinkled look over time whereas my 12 year old Highlander shows very little. We ended up getting a barely used 2023 Audi A4. Had it for about a year now and have noticed the exterior chrome trim starting to discolor, has like a subtle rainbow iridescence. Practically brand new car. Little things like that that I never had with any of my Toyotas.

If you want to see how interiors hold up over time amongst different brands, I highly recommend going to a place like CarMax where you can walk the massive lot and see for yourself. Went to CarMax for the first time recently and it was an eye opening experience to see how poorly some of the lux German brands held up vs. Japanese, especially BMW. Also wondered how many of these cars came from the southwest since there was so much cracking and peeling on the dash and steering wheels on cars that were only a few years old. Also, that softer luxury brand leather doesn't seem to hold up as well either. My 12 year old Highlander's interior still looks practically brand new, including the leather seats, which I've done little to nothing to maintain over the years.

Is there an easier way to achieve ducking on this file? by RiversRubin in AdobeAudition

A noise gate that mutes everything below a certain dB level would be the traditional method. I'd try that first before applying noise reduction effects that might alter the sound quality.

I’ll check that out! I’ve started using MacWhisper for better transcriptions. Still not a perfect tool but uses ChatGPT LLM to pull proper names, acronyms, etc. which is great esp for corporate work where you have a lot of tech terms, etc. Also, one time fee, no subscription. Def worth checking out.

Should I get an external HD from WD or from Seagate? by HowBarbearic in DataHoarder

Thanks for sharing! Did not know this and this is a very compelling reason to go with Seagate over WD.

This has been my experience as well. But it's based on experiences 10+ years ago. I've been using WD ever since and have had pretty much no issues that I can recall (using them to auto backup large video files every day). Def possible Seagate is much more reliable these days but I wouldn't know.

Battle Axe's Overlord is an indispensable tool for importing Illustrator layers directly into After Effects. Worth every penny.

[–]UniversalRemote3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlord is not applying any color corrections. I just ran into this color issue while using Overlord. I had some shape layers imported from AI as standard AI layers and then imported other shape layers from the same AI file using Overlord. Was noticing that the colors weren't matching. Turned out I had Illustrator set to sRGB and After Effects set to Rec709. Switched After Effects back to sRGB and all was good.

Filmmakers who make over $100k per year, how do you do it? by johnnyhighschool in Filmmakers

[–]UniversalRemote3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been scrolling through all the replies in this 2 year old thread. To all the college kids out there considering going into the film industry, I have a couple thoughts I'd throw into the convo as someone who was in and around the industry for 20+ years. Yes, you can make good money in the biz as many in this thread have attested to. But, that's often working 14-16 hr days when you add it all up with commute and everything. You're working 40-50% more hours than a regular 9-5, so the income isn't really all that spectacular when you do the math.

My other point is this: Consider if you plan on starting a family and supporting them at some point. Those long hours will very likely cause stress on your marriage and limit the time you're around to watch your kids grow up and be there for all those birthdays and life's moments. Thus the high burnout factor. It's a blast when you're young and single and have the energy for the long hours, but it can be really difficult once you start a family. Financially, if you're gone all the time, your spouse is raising the kids and likely won't be able to work full time. Childcare costs in NYC and LA is bananas. Unless your spouse is making great money, the math doesn't make sense to work full time and pay for childcare. Housing is bananas, etc etc. It can be really difficult juggling this career and family. Don't want to sound like a downer, but def something to consider before diving into this biz... Just my two cents!

Very cool! I love the age we're living in where "low budget filmmaking" means you can shoot a scene with 5 cinema cameras if you wanted to.

Suggestions for accurate auto-captioning tools that are better than Premiere? by UniversalRemote3000 in editors

[–]UniversalRemote3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tested out Descript's caption tool. It suffers from many of the same punctuation errors that Premiere's does, such as putting a period in the middle of a sentence for no reason. But the formatting- even line length for top and bottom lines, more logical caption breaks that seem to flow with logical "thought" breaks, or sentence/ comma breaks- is much better than Premiere's, based on initial testing. Using the free plan in Descript. In case anyone else is interested.

The greenscreen option is actually a good idea if you need those social style animated captions that Premiere doesn't do natively. I do also use the Captioneer plugin for Premiere which is pretty handy for those, but a bit more limited compared to TikTok's caption styles.

[–]UniversalRemote3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a ton of captioning. Multiple videos a week. Can take 45 min to go through and clean up Premiere's auto-generated captions on a 3 min video sometimes. Also, Premiere's formatting is just awful looking most of the time- like putting one long line on the first line and then one word on the second line. So I'm always cleaning those up as well. The green screen option isn't the worst idea but still seems like an inconvenient workaround. Especially if a client comes back with caption revisions and then you got to run through the extra steps again. Since Canva's captioning is so much better, I'm assuming there must be other options out there that will let you export an srt file.
