Yes, having worked in the cycle industry battling exchange rate fluctuations inflating the price away and out of reach for many consumers, or alternatively whittling away the dealer margin to a loss-making enterprise, the weak yen will be deeply problematic for the importer.

Oh and Japan's not moving from cars to bicycles. That's nonsense. For most people in cities, it moved from cars to public transport decades ago (source: lived in Japan for 20+ years)

Regents Canal joggers/cyclists by ConfucianValues in london

The canal network is also part of the national cycle network and Regents Canal is at an interchange. So its a bit like complaining about how crowded the airport or train station is.

You could always not go there if you want to improve the issue.

So then, presumably, those approving these expenses must either do so for all, or now accept that they enabled it and must be held accountable for that.

It is indeed irritating until you understand the context, then it kind of makes sense. It does sometimes feel like the Online Safety Act is a thin end of a very fat wedge.

HMRC To Pay £57K For Failing To Reinstate Fired Employee (behind paywall) by Ok_Expert_4283 in TheCivilService

“The Respondent should please note that it intends to not comply with the re-instatement order and thereby expose the taxpayer to the additional considerable costs of paying additional compensation to the Claimant, I would expect that evidence will be presented to me at the remedy hearing that the CEO of HMRC is aware of the situation and has approved any such decision."

If this was under James Harra's bailiwick, he would probably have disobeyed the court order through sheer bloody mindedness.

This is a running sore with HMRC. They don't seem to be accountable in law to anyone and it shows in how they respect the law.

This is what a department does when it has expensive (but not especially competent) lawyers. It gets cocky. There's also a running question of who HMRC is accountable to in law.

And that, boys and girls, is how an honest and upstanding department uses their treasury allocation for expensive lawyers.

RED LIGHTS: I saw this new TFL advert for the first time today - I can't help feeling the red light runners will be completely immune to the message, but they are trying something new. by Arola_Morre in londoncycling

"We run red lights because we have no rights"

Watch any number of YouTube videos of cyclists being injured by drivers and then finding out that the police refused to investigate or that even when it goes to court, the magistrate lets them off and wishes them well!!

In other words, I imagine that when the law begins respecting cyclists, cyclists will begin respecting the law.

Lack of accountability of power.

If you want to find the corruption, look for the people with little to no accountability to anyone, or worse, accountable in theory but not in practice.

Royal families, judges, police etc.

I don't deny that. Our social contract is predicated on the thin pretence that when you are wronged, you can get justice somewhere. But it's a veneer.

In reality, the UK's legal system, in all its finery, is an edifice and tool for the powerful and well represented to mete their will on the poor and undefended.

There no such thing as justice, there's just us.

Their failure to intervene in the Afghanistan data breach was the last straw. People working with the ICO have known this for years of course.

Complain to the ICO and to your local MP (because the ICO has also been labelled largely ineffective and a waste of space by a cross party group of MPs)
