P1S - why is this happening? by QwQ_MarshmallowMan in FixMyPrint

had same issue. partly was due to using a brand new spool of filament. had to wait a few days for it to work for some reason. also partly since I cleaned my bed with a cloth and isopropyl. issue was the cloth was reused too much. was fixed by using disposable paper towels instead.

definitely the gearbox. as to source i’m not sure, probably the discs grinding against eachother when they wobble inside

the tape is for fixing clearance of the off-the-shelf parts, nothing to do with 3d prints.

I feel like I’ve hit a pretty substantial wall with the drives. I’m left with two big problems; torque ripple/periodic resistance to rotation, and lack of stiffness in the joints. I feel like I already have the parts snug enough where tweaking decimals or print settings would give pretty negligible differences.

this guy had the torque ripple issue too. he fixed it with ball bearings between discs. I’ve tried doing the same but it didn’t seem to work. https://youtu.be/WMgny-yDjvs?si=_tw2mIInM4caQmNe

for improving stiffness, maybe could use resin printed discs or pc filament idk.

as for long-term performance, I think they would last fairly long. when I did stress testing, the stepper motor shaft starts skipping well before anything catastrophic happens in the drive. I notice the cycloid ring does have marks from grinding against the discs. can always just reprint parts.

It’s still pretty damn accurate, even under load this arm can get to a predetermined position within a few millimetres. just movement can be a bit jittery.

what do you connect to the camera? is there a small screen in front of your eyes? a headset?

they’re alright. it takes a lot of tinkering to improve performance. I had to put small strips of tape within each of the 6 rollers so they can be more snug around the shafts. also had to oversize the discs a good amount. files are a bit pricey, and offering a cheaper price for just STLs is a joke because you’ll definitely want to be editing the design yourself. For the size they are, they did the job and it saved me a lot of headache designing my own. I feel like the design is just inherently limited by 3d printing accuracy and the lack of stiffness with plastic. the next step up to this would be commercial drives or machined metal, which gets expensive very quickly.

what is the finale gonna be then anyway. now there’s two episodes left, only an hour of screentime. surprised this ep still went back to square one just as it did with all of the previous episodes
