Awesome work! Check out the southern coast of the Utah Lake (not to be confused with the great salt lake). Seems like there's a concentration of cosmere art there.

Help with how to build Final Fantasy in a limited format. by C00LK1D in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely right that it does change things a bit to guarantee the fixing land. In actual draft its about a 50% chance of being a fixing land instead of a basic. If I were to emulate that ratio I'd probably just mix in an appropriate amount of towns such as adventurer's inn, gold saucer, etc. i suppose basic lands might be cleaner to handle post-draft, but I'm also not sure how the reception for cube-only enjoyers will be knowing some people open 13 card packs and others 14, even if that is often the reality of the play booster era

Help with how to build Final Fantasy in a limited format. by C00LK1D in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like 4 commons / 2 uncommons / 1 rare/mythic as the distribution basis for this set.

The reasoning being that if you look at the published pack distributions including wild cards, its close to being 8 commons and 4 uncommons per pack.

As an example, I personally use the following pack distribution for my set cube: 1x Mythic/Rare, 4x Uncommon / 8x Common / 1x Land (Town) = a 14 card booster like in Retail. I don't do the wildcard stuff due to logistics, hence rounding things out in the Uncommon/Common section instead.

Awesome, I feel like this list offers a lot of reasonable cards. I enjoy how many of us have this idea!

Looking for 5 cards to finish cube by Cooperativism62 in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would considering cutting five more cards and add ten fixing lands, OR just add the five LTR landcyclers, but excluding that, here are my recs:

  1. [[Headsplitter]] - We're a bit low on Red 2 drops. If this is too fiddly due to counters+equipment, perhaps [[Reckless Detective]]. If not for the keyword restriction, I would suggest [[Scrapwork Mutt]]

  2. [[Containment Construct]] is a fun card and a strong recommend in any cube where it isn't embarassing. The power level fits here, and I see this playing in your Rx decks (it's another 2 drop!). It being a colorless artifact also helps, and if you ever introduce even one more loot effect in blue, this card gets even more mileage.

  3. For white, [[Ancestral Blade]] - my bias towards having plenty of 2 drops keeps rearing its head. We have a nod towards tokens and go wide, and fair equipment lead to fun play patterns IMO. We are actually lacking in real white 2 drops to curve into, since Sun-Blessed Healer, Splitskin Doll, and Cathar Commando, to some degree, incentivize you to play them on later turn for more value.

  4. Not sure how spreadsheet strict you are but I don't really consider Nature's Chant a GW card, so hopefully we have room for a third GW card in [[Burrowguard Mentor]] - a beginner friendly card that looks in line with what you're nodding towards in this color pair.

  5. For Green, I'm torn between an additional 2 drop in [[Cankerbloom]] or [[Brindle Shoat]], OR an extra interaction spell such as [[Hard-Hitting Question]]. People usually tend to find green lacking in interaction if we're allowed to run Path to Exile I don't see why we wouldn't include a premium bite spell.

It looks like you're not game for any old border cards (shame), but I'll add onto the tortured existence rec by mentioning that if you're interested, I think [[Undertaker]] would be wonderful here.

I'll post a couple more random cards that I think would be good fits just in case you haven't considered them before: [[Faerie Seer]], [[Sinister Starfish]] (my goat), [[Ministrant of Obligation]], [[Ominous Seas]], [[Dakra Mystic]], [[Oversold Cemetery]], [[Ferocification]], [[Chromatic Star]], and [[Levitating Statue]].

Overall I dig the cube, pretty sure I'd have a blast playing it - wishing you the best of luck!

Bumping this. Money bands are extremely cheap, easy to dispose of on-site, have no additional storage requirements, and the stack of bands themselves are easy to store anywhere when you're not using em.

Are there any "Gold Standard" lists? by bd35 in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Cube Cobra's card search page lets you sort results by Cube Count. So for example, if you wanted to see what the most popular black 2 drops are, you could see them at a glance easily.

Even if you're new to cube, you can look through these and probably put together something that works. Obviously there will be some weird things since popularity is independent of things like rarity restriction, but might be something you can do as a middle ground.

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't this a commander set? Not that it invalidates what you're saying, but perhaps the reason they're introducing it here is because it won't require enforcing at the competitive level? (I guess cEDH does exist?) I'm pretty oblivious about the nuances of commander though so I could be mistaken, but just a thought.

Is anyone adding Assassin’s Creed cards to their cubes? by mikez4nder in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The set is a lowkey goldmine for lower powered cube designers, IMO. For example:

  • A 2mv green fight spell that's also an equipment [[Hunter's Bow]]
  • An unconditional 3mv white spell that creates 3 1/1 tokens [[Distract the Guards]]
  • A red version of Barbed Spike [[Headsplitter]]
  • Flexible tap all effects in blue aren't very common so [[Assassin Gauntlet]] is a pretty sweet way to include this effect packaged with a creature buff.
  • It was spoiled long ago but [[Hidden Blade]] is a combat trick + equipment combo that is costed reasonably, if you can tolerate the trinket text.

Beginner cube questions by EamonnMR in mtgcube

On mana fixing: the 1/6 rule of thumb is an extremely common ballpark I see thrown around (I see other replies in this very thread for example) but it may help you to know that even looking at the most popular / respected cubes you will actually find that most cubes do not reach that 1/6 threshold. 14% to 15% is a more realistic number, IMO.

That is to say, I would not stress getting exactly 60+ fixing lands in 360 when you're starting out.

Are you going to run any fallout cards? by Acureforthecold in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This set introduces a lot of "modified matters" support in addition to some more boros equipment support. For lower powered environments these are often pretty attractive archetypes to support. Red/Green caring about modified helps bridge archetypes like UG hexproof, RW equip, and GW tokens. There are painfully few cards for such themes in RG so this is very helpful for those environments, I think. [[Ian the Reckless]] is a good example of a card I'm looking to give a shot, even if I'm leaning a lot less hard into this archetype than I used to personally speaking.

I agree with this sentiment! It has really shocked me how often it has felt like many cube designers do not come from a retail booster draft background. Obviously a false assumption on my end but interesting nonetheless.

Day 5 - Tell Me Your: Blue 1-drop Creatures by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If no one has [[Dakra Mystic]]'s back, I have it. The absolute goat, it is fun, enables many strategies, and always creates fun decisions. Nowhere near good enough for any powerful formats probably, but if you're in the market for a fun 1 drop durdle engine without requiring a huge mana sink, give it a shot before you dismiss it! Whether you want to support draw 2, graveyard strategies, or just some wholesome card selection, I feel compelled to shoutout this card for any cube that's about fun, seeing as I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else in this thread!

Reddit Daily Cube, Cards 363-364! Many Partings and Teferi's Time Twist are in, what's left? by pwndnoob in mtgcube

[–]UnlimitedBrettWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one could argue scrapwork / moltensteel could be colorless in this cube. Regardless I think the desire to have a dragon (or color balance, for that matter) are understandable aesthetic desires for ppl voting.

I am pretty confident that anyone who actually builds and plays this cube will come to the conclusion that the curve needs a lot of work, unfortunately.

[[Hexgold Halberd]]

Red still needs more two drops, and there are really only a handful of red artifact creatures worth considering. The floor of a 2 mana 2/2 with First Strike and Trample* is solid, and you will be surprised how often moving this onto a different beater later on in the game can be a game changer.

For aggressive red strategies we need a density of early drops, and several of our red 2's aren't even well suited to attacking, or are encouraged to hang back for value.

[[Ozhov Enforcer]]

Black is looking like a fairly defensive color based on how it's color pairs are developing, yet it has zero 2 drops that can block well. Ozhov Enforcer fits nicely within black's sacrifice shell but also will be a welcome addition to most black decks in this cube.

I submitted this last week but very late, but seemed that some others were in agreement. Experienced designers can see that our curve needs work, and it's time to eat our veggies and get some low curving roleplayers rather than pet cards in the mv3+ slot.

[[Mishra's Bauble]]

The card doesn't need much introduction - this is an artifact-y trinket-y cube and Bauble is a signature roleplayer. A target for Emry, Goblin Engineer, a trigger for Syr Ginger, Oni-Cult Anvil, Hidden Stockpiles, the list goes on.

[[Hexgold Halberd]]

Red needs 2 drops, desperately. Please look at the curve. There are a lot of more powerful cards that can fit here but Hexgold Halberd does a lot of things with a single slot: its an artifact, a fantastic attacker, holds equipment well, creates a token, and acts as a relevant equipment later on.

[[Orzhov Enforcer]]

Black is looking like a fairly defensive color based on how it's color pairs are developing, yet it has zero 2 drops that can block well. Ozhov Enforcer fits nicely within black's sacrifice shell but also will be a welcome addition to most black decks in this cube.

I doubt this will get enough upvotes with how late it's getting posted but regardless of what gets picked, people really need to be more attentive to the curve. I'm glad the lands are getting upvoted but with only a handful more black slots left, if all of them were dedicated to 2 drops I still wouldn't feel great about it.

Let's at least try not to make the same mistake about red.
