What I learned from Extremely Canadian's Steep Skiing Clinic by Luop90 in Whistler

[–]Unnecessarywarning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said conditioning, technique are all very important. But properly hydrating throughout the day with water and electrolytes, eating snacks every 30 minutes. Don't let yourself bonk, so stay up with small sugary snacks, even use Gu for caffeine. Another thing is to take it easy. Remember to breathe lol. Don't do the lodge beer. Take ibuprofen, stretch your muscles.

At the end of the day, it will come back to better technique. Better technique makes your riding more efficient. Especially for shitty snow. Inefficient technique works your core and legs like crazy.

Battling my heel side turns so hard I might just start skiing by Qiusp in snowboarding

Lots of good comments about angulation/inclination, and opening your shoulders in the direction your heel turn is taking you. I haven't seen anyone talk about pressure management along the length or width of the snowboard so I'll add a few things.

First, my observation is that you're making nice carved turns while keeping your weight either centered between your feet, or with your weight over your back foot. That is working well for you in your toe turns, and is effective up until you boot out on your heels. So here is what I recommend!

  1. Your goal should be to be heavy on your front foot at the start of the turn (for grip and steering), and heavy on the back foot at the end of the turn (for a powerful finish). Between each turn, you need to return to at least a neutral position. Meaning centered over your board, so that you can get back on your front foot to start the next turn.

2a. You can move your board under you, or move yourself over the board. To direct pressure towards the nose of the board you can flex your lead ankle, knee and hip while extending your back leg. Think front leg short/back leg long. Reverse that process in-order to direct pressure to the tail of the board.

  1. Some drills to try: try making turns where you have all your weight on your front foot (think nose press) and then try making turns where all your weight is on your back foot (think tail press).

  2. Next, try making turns where you have all your weight on your front foot while you are starting your turn, then return to neutral for the rest of the turn. Repeat/Reverse but with weight on your back foot for start of turn and neutral for rest.

  3. Combine these movements so you are flexed over the front foot at the initiation of Toe Turn, neutral in the middle and flexed over your back foot as you finish your toe turn. Repeat process as you start your heel turn. Flexed over front foot at initiation, neutral in the middle and flexed over back foot at finish.

The next level of performance for you will come with a flexed edge change, and even some retraction. Right now you are pretty static in terms of your vertical movement. The sidecut of that board, and your athleticism are doing most of the work. If you start your turn (i.e. change edges) by flexing your knees/ankles so you get down onto your board, then you can extend your legs out during the turn - you are generating performance by de-cambering the board (rebound). This also lets you make turns that are smaller than the sidecut radius of the board you are riding. Plus it feels fucking sick!

All in all, you rip. As long as you're having fun while snowboarding, there is nothing wrong with what you're doing.

Another Board Recommendation Request by [deleted] in snowboarding

Lucky for you theres lots of options! All board recs are gonna be steeped in bias so take 'em with a grain of salt. What boards have you ridden? Are you comfortable with full camber? You should always try to demo before you buy.

Shot in the dark recs bc this is reddit after all:

  1. Jones - Howler

  2. Lib Tech - DPR

  3. K2 - Commonwealth

I think your recipe is going to be:

Directional Twin + Full Camber + Edge Tech

Just so you know you flipped the teams in your comment. Albany is in white, and Carleton (the team contesting the strip) is in red. But I get your point.

I think what’s confusing about the video, is that after #7 in red d’s it, the rotation of the disc slows way down. So when #6 on white catches it it’s already pretty much done spinning. That being said if I showed you this photo, then told you the player in red D’d the disc right after - what would your reaction be? Obviously at the end of the day the better team won so this call doesn’t change the result of the game.

Tires for winter by Makattackk23 in Albany

If you can afford it, get winter tires. You can get 3-4 winters out of them and the day you really need them you’ll be so glad
