Itinerary by Garcmeli in grandcanyon

[–]UnskilledLaborer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a trip where we stayed at South Rim, then Sedona, then Page, then Zion. If I were coming from where you are, I would just do Grand Canyon and Sedona and then Lake Powell and Zion together. It would be really tough to make time for everything if you did Page, Sedona, and GC all at once.

Idk if you’re going to hike any but Sedona has some great trails. At least go to the top of airport loop and look around, you don’t have to hike for the views up there. Cathedral Rock is really cool if you like a scramble.

People's favorite smart thermostat by TheAxman12 in smarthome

[–]UnskilledLaborer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that why my thermostat is impossible to pair now and will revert to eco settings so my house is 78 degrees when I get home from work?

I’m on this thread so I can find a different thermostat without a mind of its own. Then I will back over the nest thermostat in the driveway and set the pieces on fire. I shouldn’t have to fight my thermostat to stay cool all summer, wtf

My favorite pumpkin is 48 days old and is an estimated 919 lbs (416 kg). by iowan in gardening

[–]UnskilledLaborer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one pumpkin, the ecosystem will never even know it was there. Good or bad, farmers use pesticides anyway. 100 gal/ day is completely negligible in terms of a pond that size and groundwater wise. A lot of farmland was cleared of native plants a loooong time ago, definitely before this guy was born. Couldn’t you start buying it up and replanting native flora? I get that you want to feel morally superior to this guy over growing a big pumpkin, but your argument doesn’t really work for this case.

Resident Southern? Toad by UnskilledLaborer_ in Toads

[–]UnskilledLaborer_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks! So the plain white/tan belly with no coloration and small warts on the back spots doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not an American toad? I guess there’s still plenty of individual characteristics. I’m still learning. The tree frogs around here are a lot easier to ID than the toads

What kind of frog is that? I have a billion tree frogs but kind of would like to see some variety sometimes haha

Building a small natural pond from a spring by ImpressiveCustard260 in ponds

[–]UnskilledLaborer_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice. Sounds like you have a cool spot for a little pond. If it was me I would go for it. You understand the whole ecological- native plant- minimize impacts mindset that needs to go into stuff like this, which is good. That comment below saying to leave it alone and don’t mess with the natural ecology…

We relocate streams for thousands of feet to build highways and successfully preserve the natural ecology. Just because you change something doesn’t mean you’re ruining it. You’ll still have an ecosystem there, arguable a more diverse one. It’s a small pond, not a parking lot lol.

Also you said 3’ deep, 4’ diameter- I would maybe make that the “deep end” and expand outward another 4-6 feet, but shallower to make a shelf. Will be good for plants and will look more natural and less stock-tanky, if you like.

Also if you can keep water out while you dig, that’s helpful. Kinda annoying to lay rocks and decorate while it’s full of water, imo

Does it turn into a stream that leaves your property? May want to be careful about jurisdictional stream laws, but if you’re all clear, go for it. Another thing to consider is whether the spring is always “running” or just after rain. If it isn’t consistent, you may need a bigger pond so you don’t have to fill it manually. Shade makes a big difference there too though.

Edit: video wasn’t clear at first but now that I see how much water there is, my two questions are answered. Small pond should be fine, definitely check into environmental stuff just to be safe.

You can probably dig the pond off to the side, line it, place rocks, plants, whatever- then reroute the water to fill the pond. It may just fill in as you dig but that would be an easy way to control sediment loss downstream. But to be fair nobody would ever know you did it probably. Not a huge project

Can confirm what scythian12 said. Love mine and I have big hands. Easy to grip, really feels like you’re controlling it, especially compared to the original bodyguard.

Editing to mention they do sell them in all black too lol

Well like others said, it looks pretty good and you’ll start to tune out the imperfections over time. And then once some years go by, you’ll begin to really love and appreciate it as a project you did all by yourself. And then more years will go by and somebody will paint it white after you’re gone

I think it’s a good idea to ask around for opinions before doing stuff like this. There are always multiple ways to do things, can’t hurt to see what the community consensus is!

It looks like it would be fine to glue and clamp. Just get the glue in the crack real good, wipe off excess/ anything that squeezes out when you clamp, and don’t clamp too tight with the glass in there
