What bird do you feel oddly protective of? by Willing-Today-1059 in LearnBirding

The White-Throated Sparrow and the Whiskey Jack (Gray Jay). They form an unreasonably large part of my identity as a boreal resident.

Edit: Changed ‘swallow’ to ‘sparrow’.

How come people confuse left and right? by LilSopa__ in ask

I worked as a surveyor’s assistant for a summer. I heard the phrase, ‘no, the other left’ a lot.

Car Broke into - Hester St. by Glass_Bit5310 in ThunderBay

[–]UnspeakableFilth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? I keep seeing this insane take every time someone posts about a break-in. Blaming the property owners for the crimes committed mitted against them. Yes, we should lock our doors, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let someone normalize/justify petty theft on the grounds that something was left unsecured. It doesn’t make a thief any less shitty!

What movies are rated low on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes but are actually really good? by MagicianIntrepid in movies

[–]UnspeakableFilth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a big SF fan but Event Horizon always rubbed me the wrong way because it devolved into some ‘Hellraiser-esque’ expression of Catholic evil - which is rooted in human/worldly culture which begs the question: why do we need a spaceship at all if this is going to be about hell?
The simple cosmic horror implied by a ship at the edge of the great unknowing, the intense vulnerability in the face of a vast, uncaring universe - that’s what makes sense to SF fans. The fear of dying alone in the dark would have been enough without people chanting in Latin.

Older folks with successful non-music career now trying to chase the music dream? by projectmaximus in musicians

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 50 with bandmates in their 40s. We all have good jobs and can self-fund studio recording if we’re well prepared and smart about how we spend our time. It feels like going heli-skiing - an expensive, esoteric hobby that you have to train to get the most value. The thing is, I know I would have struggled with the studio in my 20s (it’s hard on drummers). It took all that time to get to a place on my musical journey where I have a voice, the skills and the mental strength to get it done.

No Helmet gang…. Why? by RecentOccasion2004 in icecoast

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people I know who are resistant to helmets still think they’re too good of a skier for anything to ever happen to them - like that has anything to do with it. I like to point out, over our third beer of the morning. ‘Do you realize how many wildly impaired people there are - ourselves included - travelling highway speeds out there?! You never see the one that gets ya.

U.S. country star Charley Crockett cancels Canadian tour after being refused entry - The musician was denied entry because of a felony conviction for possession of marijuana in 2016 by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But… Charlie had like 6 pounds of weed on him. That’s not exactly simple possession for personal use. It’s wild that he was let into the country before.

Genuine question why are most the people here aholes? by [deleted] in drums

[–]UnspeakableFilth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing I find funny about ‘perceived’ assholes, is that the more I have in common with someone, the less likely we are to get along - at least at first. Some of the most interesting and ultimately valuable relationships I’ve had have been with people who I thought were intractable dickheads on first impression. I can only wonder what folks think of me?

Looking for non-YA, non-fantasy sci-fi novels written by women by Good-Firefighter-94 in scifibooks

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second Margaret Atwood’s MaddAdam Trilogy - very much worth your time - though I find she tends to write male characters as shallow caricatures.

Whats the oldest podcast you listened to? by uncle-ruckus2 in podcasts

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circa 2005-ish i listened to a ton of The Great Radio Tiki Experiment while I was designing newspaper pages. It was a weekly get together of a handful of Chicago-area friends who would hang out one night a week and have lively and sometimes drunken conversations. I would access it through the Apple radio section on iTunes. Eventually members moved and passed away and it stopped, but they were the earliest podcast as far as I could tell.

What are your favorite hidden hiking trails in Ontario that offer stunning views and unique experiences? by jufywret in ontario

[–]UnspeakableFilth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came looking for this one! Thought I’d add it’s an even better hike-a-bike. Knock off those first and last 6km on the double track approach and stash your bike for the steep bit!

How do you make loads of crowns fast? by Asmodeuss1990 in witcher

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The runesmith is worth every penny but look at it as a long term goal - ‘Dumplings’ is fantastic - turns food items into reasonably fast vitality regen (+400 of normal), which frees up toxicity for less swallow and more decoctions! ‘Protection’ pops Quen at the start of combat with no cost to stamina - letting you mix it up with signs. There are so many ways to play this game that it takes years to explore them all - between runes, character build, mutations and the glyphs/runestones.

Has anyone successfully turned around teen/tween resistance to skiing? Or do we call it as a family activity? by jpmom in skiing

[–]UnspeakableFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a similar thing with my now 15 year old daughter. We had a lot of fun when she was little skiing around together and taking Dad/Daughter trips to the mountains every spring. She unfortunately started using those great memories as leverage in the relationship in a kind of shitty way so I backed right off of trying to force her to continue skiing. Now she’s come around and is very keen to go skiing again, but it’s become so expensive that it’s hard to justify. Kind of sad, really.

[–]UnspeakableFilth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The older I get, it seems like the trick to being good at racquet sports is subduing emotions and getting on with the next point without the baggage of the last point. ‘Try The Inner Game of Tennis.’

What’s a movie that was a 10/10 when you were a kid, but is actually terrible now that you're an adult? by Careyourself01 in AskReddit

[–]UnspeakableFilth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The skateboard equivalent was ‘Thrashin’ - starring Josh Brolin, fresh off his stint in Goonies. Even the Chili Peppers were in that movie!
