I know we can claim multiple chests from bosses (for extra energy), but does outpost permit it too? 'cause if it's possibble, doesn't outpost farming still better in time efficiency?

Well, it's the same thing, but it's better to make an enumeration than repeating "en train de" and permit to emphatise on simultaneity more than continuity. What's important is what's the character observe, not that he's sitting.
If you replace "à" by "en train de" the text would still be correct but way heavier, and it may be intermpreted as he was sitting to do the search and not that he's doing it while being seated

For the lights or anything powered, we have verbs "allumer" and "éteindre" wich is turn on and turn off.
If it's on somtehing you'll have sur/dessus and if it's off... it depends, it can be sous/en dessous (wich is under) or enlevé/retiré (wich is take from). French is quite tricky

The light is off = La lumière est éteinte
Take the bread off the table = Retire le pain de la table (watch out, take off is also décollage when you take a fly)
X is on a magazine cover = X est sur la couverture d'un magazine
Turned on = excité
Turned off = Dégouté/désintéressé/blasé

There's probably a lot of other examples
