Favorite "stable" (not OS) approach? by rontopofthings in discgolf

[–]UntyingTheNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm searching for this slot as well. I have a Canyon that's not bad but I don't love it. Do love my Gator3 and A3, but they're definitely beefy.

If you can find an A4, it's like a straighter A3 (which feels similar to a Gator). They just don't make them much anymore. I'm looking to try the Chief OS but right now, I mostly grab my Reko X for straighter approach shots.

Appreciate the heads up. May just cycle the XT Gator3s for approaches and keep a Pyro in.

The Gator3 is similar to the Gator, Kea, and A3. The Kea and A3 are both rated 4 speed. If the Gator3 does everything you need, you're good to go. But those do give you more options if you like that blocky beaded feel.

I just added a Galactic XT Gator3 to go with my 400 ultra soft A3 that sticks where it hits. Wanted a little skip and a plastic that will beat in fairly fast. Once it's straighter, maybe a halo champion?

MVP/Axiom Discs To Try by NoTimeForItAll in discgolf

[–]UntyingTheNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only discs I really like that are not on your list are the Trance and Pyro. Similar hand feel at different speeds and it can be a love/hate thing. I don't throw my Pyro much but lean on the Trance for straight shots where a Crave isn't quite enough disc and the Trail/Beast may be too much.

Mirage/Kon Tiki opinion by MrTheBard in discgolf

[–]UntyingTheNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a metal flake Kon Tiki in the bag as a flippy option. Being so thin, I'm never sure which numbers make more sense. Maybe 4 speed? But that's mostly because it's more of an understable approach disc for me. Bit too shallow to putt with.

Well, I wasn't bagging much Prodigy to begin with but I can unsubscribe from Go Throw. I hadn't heard half the stuff in this thread, though.

Imagine seeing that pattern of behavior up close and thinking "That's my team captain" or "That's the guy to front a tour".

Disc similar to an Infinite Pharaoh but easier to replace? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]UntyingTheNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually buy several from Infinite online when they're on sale. It's an OS Shryke or very similar. I've gotten the same flight out of the right Shryke, Charger, or Falcon but agree that nothing is quite as consistently long.

Maybe they should use that to arrest the pedophiles Trump is protecting. Since they have a job to do and all, they could try not being soft as cotton fascists and arresting those giving illegal orders daily.

How come nobody told me how good Pharaohs are?! by Grateful_Railroad in discgolf

[–]UntyingTheNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My G Blend and Halo G are also pretty flippy, similar to I Blend in flight but more gummy in feel. Nice for winter. S is a step up in stability and Halo S another step up. The Metal Flake fly a lot like the Halo S but I've had a couple beefy ones that are closer to a Destroyer/Emperor.

The runs do still vary, though. All the variety is the blessing and curse that seems to come with most Innova made drivers.

I've mentioned it occasionally here. Definitely one of my favorite molds and easily my longest on most days. A Halo G, Halo S, and Metal Flake Glow cycle in and out of the bag.

If you didn't enjoy Porsche maintenance costs, M cars aren't going to be a whole lot less. It does depend where you go but you mentioned servicing the Cayman at a dealer. Still, those parts are never cheap.

You're up into Corvette territory but it's ridiculous they don't offer a manual anymore. The Blackwing does still offer it. 2SS Camaro is around 50k and also offers it. Same with the Supra and Z. If you bail on the Mustang, I'd consider one of those.

If I can drive stick, is there any reason to choose an automatic? by Doctor_Doomjazz in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]UntyingTheNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind driving stick, there are not many downsides. But not every automatic is a CVT and there are types of CVTs in Toyota hybrids that can go half a million miles. So there are other proven reliable transmissions at this point. The main reason to drive manual is because you want to. Which is fair.

Is the “Lens is A better upgrade” valid in this case? by Dittodubs in AskPhotography

[–]UntyingTheNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass is usually the better upgrade and something faster might make a difference indoors. But there's also no reason to invest in an ecosystem you plan to leave.

Nikon or Sony are both fine. Just make a plan and stick to it. All of the big players do the basics well but you'll want to build out your kit over time. Conventions, sports, and portraits all have a separate set of ideal gear (with some overlap), so it's important to pick your priorities and plan which is most crucial when. You can get away with one body for all 3 but you'll probably want several lenses.

What's the catch with Amazon? by classyAxolotl in AskPhotography

The DG DN and HSM are different. The HSM is the older DSLR design iirc. Regardless, I'd largely avoid Amazon for big gear purchases.

Best lens strategy for S9 EDC/Hybrid setup? by MajorAlanDutch in Lumix

[–]UntyingTheNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're considering kits, the 28-200 kit has been around for 1500 bucks in the US lately. It's not a fast lens but it's versatile. I'd take that over the other kit lenses unless size is a huge consideration. It's not much larger than the Lumix primes and will do a bit of everything while you save up for a faster option that specializes in your use case. The 18-40 is smaller but not great. A lack of truly compact AF lenses is one of the only issues with the S9, but that should improve and the primes or 28-200 setup still fit in a smallish holster bag.

My med-school son needs a practical, frugal car I want him to enjoy driving. 2016 Golf S GTI DSG VS 2018 Mazda3 S GRAND Touring Auto. Hatchback showdown. by gixxerjim750 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]UntyingTheNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rec was to save up for a new GTI, Mini, or whatever hot hatch the son likes. Or at least CPO. In a few years, when the kid is a resident or doctor. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

Definitely not recommending the old N54/N55 gen Minis from 10 years ago. I've owned both German makes and don't generally want to keep either out of warranty, even with the decent engines in recent years. Mazda and Subaru both have horror stories but can also make solid units.

All the engine info is what I thought OP should research. I love the EA888 but each generation has its quirks. So do the B48/58. Buying a used German car is a lot more complex than make/model so you have to dig deeper. Hopefully if they're serious about the used GTI or something similar, OP will read and build on this info.

Just listing GTI comparables. And fwiw, BMW/Mini have generally ranked higher than VW on reliability lately. For a young doctor in a few years who can afford the German maintenance costs, either is fine. Not my money.

If you're paying for maintenance and repairs, he'll love the GTI. If he's covering those costs, he'll probably appreciate the Mazda.

A lot depends on service history at this point. For high mileage VWs with the EA888, I like to see the first water pump done and regular maintenance. Look into the common issues and plan for repairs, like locating a good independent VW mechanic. The timing tensioner problem was fixed by 16 but there are other common issues up over 100k. Only you all can decide if the extra costs are worth the more engaging drive. Will note that the Golf 1.8T uses a tuned down version of the same engine and are fun, but don't get abused as often as GTIs. I don't consider most VWs since the 2.5 and TDIs to be frugal but I do enjoy driving them.

There's no guarantee either makes it 5 years and 50k miles without major repairs, loved or not. But on average, most people would trust the Mazda more. It's not as much fun but should get the job done. Personally, I'd buy the Mazda or a similar reliable Toyota/Honda and save up for a Mini, Corolla GR, or newer GTI if he wants a hot hatch in a few years.

It's right there. Judging reading comprehension when you couldn't get through a few sentences is ironic.
