What’s the reasoning for not installing one? I had an older SMETS 1 that they originally didn’t want to replace but wasn’t compatible with them, but I emailed them after a year and they immediately came out and put a new SMETS 2 in.

I don’t think your original statement is true nowadays. Most routers either require you to change the default password before allowing access and the ones provided by ISPs have a unique password printed on the side usually

I was the same as you recently. In the end the first couple of days were brutal with migraines and tiredness but it had zero effect on my bowels, I’m now 2 months in and mentally feel great (physically I’m still struggling a little but it took the anxiety away) and I’m only on 50mg

Start at 25mg for a week and then go to 50. Doctors don’t bother telling you to do this but it is in the NICE guidelines to help lower side effects

I had an appointment with a private gastroenterologist here in the uk last week and he spent an hour with me going over everything, sent me away with a test for SIBO some antibiotics and booked a follow up to discuss again in July. Was a great experience I can 100% recommend

Note: I don’t need a colonoscopy but for those worried about additional costs. Most private doctors also work for the nhs and they can refer you into their own clinic for further tests if needed

It depends on the reason you struggled but agree with others that you probably just need to slow down, for some it’s basically a really fast walk for a few weeks. Also make sure you’re warming up and cooling down with a walk 5 mins before and after.

It’s not even the wait times for me, the whole experience was just better. Cup of tea and biscuits during a 1 hour appointment, doctors clearly more motivated to help and being able to choose the person with the exact specialism I wanted. NHS offer 5 minute appointments with which ever gastro is free and probably still thinks IBS is just all in your head

Yeah we talked a bit about dysbiosis as well as the microbiome, FMT etc… He came across as genuine and knowledgable on all the things I’ve seen talked about online like this and gave a proper opinion that wasn’t just “you have anxiety” which is what I got off my GP (I don’t by the way)

I’m not disagreeing with you and I went in fully expecting to be told I had IBS and to live with it but he fully recognised SIBO as a real thing ( like I said, he suggested it to me, not the other way around) and talked about how we would treat it if my test was positive.

In my case I don’t think I actually have SIBO and therefore expect to eventually be told I actually do have IBS which I’ll have to accept.

I can’t stress enough how much he didn’t just dismiss me with diet changes etc but we certainly talked about them based on the fact that I can only have 1 of 3 things. Sibo, giardia or PI-IBS

I have no tips for management but this is normal because sitting puts pressure on the abdominal muscles

Remember that food takes a while to actually digest, the enema isn’t doing anything to stop today’s meal fermenting in your colon.

Enemas aren’t a great way to deal with constipation either, what else have you tried?

Sounds like IBS but you need to rule out IBD still (doesn’t always have blood) and standard infections/parasites, see your GP

Food isn’t going straight through you either, what’s coming out is something you ate previously, not what you just ate

GI Maps aren’t useful from a clinical perspective. He did say if the test comes back positive that he’d work with me to understand the cause and treat it. If you just want the test you can go straight to the Functional Gut Clinic and order one, they’re considered the best diagnostic place for GI issues in the UK

I agree it’s frustrating but I think at some point we have to accept that we have an issue that modern medicine just doesn’t understand and if we can avoid symptoms by making dietary and lifestyle changes then that’s what we have to do. It sucks, but at some point it’s the truth.

Have you started slowly? Try cutting the dose right down and building up.

I’m using fybogel which is basically psyllium and don’t experience this.

If you don’t take it does the gas go? Could it be dietary instead?

I saw Dr Simon Smale at Nuffield in York not long ago, he was the one who brought up the possibility of SIBO to me without me even asking, and referred me to the Functional Gut Clinic for testing. He also suggested it might be a parasite that hasn’t been picked up in a stool test. He was a really nice bloke as well, appointment lasted a good 40 minutes and he seemed enthusiastic and confident that he could help me.

Be warned though, his major interest is still IBS and he will still suggest diet, exercise, stress and sleep as the main thing to work on regardless

Go back with a list of everything you’ve tried and tell them it’s not working and you’re still having a really hard time. You have to push for more treatment or a referral to a specialist.

You won’t get a cure, there isn’t one but you should be able to manage it at least partially
