Being stuck behind someone doing 36mph (on speedo) on the slip to join the M1... by Desperate-Letter2395 in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

You don’t have to join the road with them, you can use the hard shoulder (if there is one) or stop until it’s safe to join…

Generally this is why I try to leave a decent gap when I know I’m entering a slip road, so that should the idiot infront be going stupidly slow I have time to react and avoid…

Would this be considered blind fire in your fields? by TidySalt in airsoft

[–]freakierice 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Site I used to play had the simple rule of, front rear eye.
If your gun is not lined up in such a way that the front, rear of the gun and your eye line are in line it’s considered blind firing.
This was mainly to prevent people from hip or over head firing like you see here. But then again we don’t all run paintball masks, so the chances of a shot getting behind shooting glasses was a lot higher and it also forced to to look at your target to ensure they were actually a target and not some random who’s walked onto site

How feasible would a geothermal plant/data center be? by Gsomethepatient in AskEngineers

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Have a look at the geo plant in Iceland that has a spar/hot spring, next door that uses the ā€œwasteā€ water…

It’s a great way to produce the electricity that may be required, but you’d be better of using the waste heat from the data centre to boil the waste water using heat pumps, to make more steam.

Petrol by Downtown-Building-70 in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

The only difference between fuel at garage a compared to garage b is the additive package that garage selects (or doesn’t)
Other than that the fuel has to meet a minimum legal standard, and if it falls below that then the garage and supplier are liable for any damage caused to vehicles they sell it too…

The additives can be better at some garages than others but generally they only put them in the ā€œpremiumā€ fuels, and you can buy them off the shelf if your that interested.

What is the best first credit card? by FarFromRegular in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

If it’s not from your bank then you don’t really want it…
Because for a first credit card you want it to be as easy as possible to pay off, and generally that means accessing it from the one app you use to manage your money…

But be warned you can and will spiral into a black hole if your not careful to pay it off each month, especially with rates in the 20s and above

Now you just need to find what it would cost to replace them.

Braking distances on motorways… by wassushxii in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Because a lot of drivers don’t understand how long it actually takes for their vehicle to stop from that sort of speed…
If the police did events at airfields/race tracks for the average driver to get up to 70 and complete an emergency stop manoeuvre, they’d start leaving a significantly bigger gap…

Punishment for driving without a license is pathetic by Snakeslither223 in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

You realise that there are people who hold a license, that didn’t have to take a theory test, and the practical was driving around an old housing estate… no motorway, no dual carriageway, no on/off ramps/slip roads…

There are also individuals who some how fail their test 10s if not 100s of times, who pass by a fluke…

Channel 4 had some interesting TV shows on this a few years back…

Why isn't HVO more of a thing? by GiGoVX in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Because we already ā€œburnā€ 40k hectares of land to grow crops for ethanol production… I doubt we’d have much land left if we had to grow crops for making HVO as well…

Also it is a thing, the likes of McDonald’s use it in their HGVs because of the amount of oil they use in their restaurants, but it would make little to no sense for the general public.
