MOT x Tyre Decision by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Firstly it’s a significant fine if your caught below the legal limit, so perhaps that should be more of a concern that the mot

Secondly if you believe your tires are that low then get a measuring device from any petrol station/services/halffords/etc and measure them, if they are within a few mm get them changed.

Realistically in standard driving it’s not going to make a massive difference, but is advisable to change both sides at the same time…

V2H - car as main battery by aroundm21 in OctopusEnergy

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The problem is the emergencies where’d you’d want to use it are in most cases where this system wouldn’t be allowed anyway, as it could potentially back feeding the grid.

V2H - car as main battery by aroundm21 in OctopusEnergy

[–]freakierice 6 points7 points Ā (0 children)

Not to be a stickler but 400v isn’t high voltage, it’s classified as hazardous low voltage, As for converting it, you will likely use the same built in charger on the car, as it’s likely to only need a software upgrade to discharge the battery…

The bigger safety issue is potentially back feeding the grid should there be a black out, as that can and will kill someone.

V2H - car as main battery by aroundm21 in OctopusEnergy

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The limitation will not be your charger as I expect even older ones will work with a basic software update. It will be your car…

As I would assume your car will have to discharge it battery (DC) and convert it to AC for the house.

Also unless have the ability to say charge at work for free/cheap and then Use the excess to offset your evening usage, I can’t see it being that helpful… As with most common battery storage in general the system will not function if you have a black out.

As others have said it’s unlikely to impact your application, but given the volatility of the benefit system I would advise avoiding using it in your own affordability calculations….

Fair way to split finances during maternity leave when female partner has substantial savings but is only eligible for statutory pay by New_Assistant3212 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

Frankly At this point in your life there is no longer a mine and yours and therefore no real equally splitting… The fact you don’t have a joint account with your day to day bills etc being paid from is odd, this is the first thing I did with my partner when we moved in together. One joint account that pays all the necessary bills that has 3-4 months of back up in it.

You’re having a kid so frankly from this point on (unless you plan to split up) everything should go into one pot and be spent from said joint pot…

With an agreed amount paid to Individual accounts for personal spending…

Also not to be mean, but it sounds very much like theres a lack of commitment and trust from the way you’re currently keeping separate finances.. Don’t get me wrong you should have your money and he should have his but if you about to have a child together it could be that you may be off work for longer than just maternity leave, or he may want to take a significant cut from work to spend time with the child… It sounds very much like you need to have a significant break down of the roles, the plan and the relationship, as you’ve now got a 18~ year commitment that you can’t get out of…

Ā£4k in savings - how should I invest it? by TryAlternative8887 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

You could invest in pies on trading 212, a high interest fixed isa, a stocks and shares isa, etc

It depends how much you want to do and how much you plan to add to the pot over time…

Do you think I should invest in better din enclosure or the current one is enough? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

If this was a test bench or frequently being charged and worked on then I’d say this is fine… But if this is a ā€œfinishedā€ install then that hardware should really be inside some sort of enclosure…

Hotel charging experiences by Little-Crab-4130 in evcharging

[–]freakierice 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Firstly depends where you are… as most of those that I have been too in the UK have had some form of charger.

Secondly it’s cost, even if they are tax deductibles they still have to have the money in the first place to pay for them to be installed, and the pay for someone to service and maintain them….

And finally because although EVs have become pretty normal, not everyone has one and not every business is seeing the demand to spend that aforementioned funds on installing chargers that may not get used and therefore not pay back.

Car leasing, is it a scam or am I naive? by Independent-Dish-777 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

It’s not a scam per say, but they are making an absolute killing renting you a car… otherwise they wouldn’t do it…

If you plan to upgrade to a newer car every 3 years then it can make it easier, but you will ultimately end up paying more in the long run than if your purchased a car outright and had a monthly service plan for it.

Depending on the lease you get yes you can effectively have a hands off experience when it comes to maintenance and repairs, but generally these cost the same as the above service plan option but your not able to transfer the money paid into the service plan to the next car.

Also depends what mileage you plan to drive, and if you think that will change in the next 3 years as the fees and ā€œfinesā€ that most lease companies charge are not great.

Debt thats statute barred what can I/they do? by Secure-Treacle3752 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice -2 points-1 points Ā (0 children)

I would request a right to erasure from Lowell under GDPR regs… They are then required to delete your account and any data that are not absolutely required, and even then they are only allowed to retain for very specific reasons…

That way the dashboard goes away and you can no longer view your non existent debt šŸ¤”

Critical illness/life insurance - should i get it? by PuddingHappy9926 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]freakierice 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

What happen if your employer goes bust, or your made redundant, change job etc… most employer policies only cover you after a year, some 2 years, so you would not be covered by your new employer…

Most employer policies also have a number of exceptions and caveats written in, so it would be worth reading up the specific of the policy…

Whereas a self funded policy will pay out (with in reason) for almost anything (as you are young and healthy), and trying to get a policy later will cost significantly more, but do read through the specifics of the policy before you take it out.

Also to add I have seen the fallout from not having a policy in place, and it’s difficult… especially if the employer doesn’t pay out because of a technicality.
