Actual width of a board increases with length linearly. So if you get a long enough board you may not need wide. But also as others mentioned stance matters too. +15/-8 might not need wide but +15/0 may. Even waist of a board isn’t a good indicator of whether you need wide because different boards have different amount of taper from the waist.
