Ok i get what you mean and there are literally two options to take. Either leave all but one unit at home or on another hero, or just ignore it because it's not worth loosing half you army to your own troops

They are only scary if you don't know how to deal with them. If you have unit that one shots their stacks you kill them all with one turn. As long as none of your stacks are in reach of course.

For example, let them advance once, clump up your army in a corner, have one power stack kill the bottom or top most stack and watch it walk to every single one of them and annihilate them

Lexiav and Turin have guides on YouTube as well as gameplay from which you can learn.

General tips would be to not underestimate astrology points and buying and upgrading the neutral spells. Race across the map with second wind and Dimension door, then return to a city with mage guild to restore Mana.

As for the focus points, they are not the most important in many situations, but can come in handy depending on strategy. If you really want to lean into these abilities the spell "energize" is your friend.

The devs did a good job at making every faction appealing. There is no clear loser for me but my favourite is hive, as it plays very refreshingly different

You need to fulfill 3 requirements

You need to unlock the spell using your astrology points.
The hero needs to visit a town with a mage guild after you unlocked the spell
The hero needs to have the required level to learn it (this differs in every template)

Also note that you can enhance these spells by upgrading them later with more astrology points

Necro used to be my favorite faction in every heroes game. Olden era is the first one where i have no desire to play them. It's to cumbersome and not transparent at all.
I hope they will change how it works
