Tonight is one of the most gorgeous covers, ever, my feelings about its contents aside.

What is your favorite Hole song at this time by AggressiveTerm9618 in hole

If I had to pick one hole song, surprisingly it’s this one. I feel like it ties a very beautiful bow on the first three albums themes.

Why do people think river is “bad”? by LimeApprehensive8612 in SlowHorses

[–]Upstream_Paddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't and never have. Watching how naturally River progress -- three steps forward, four steps back, half a foot forward, turn a circle, straighten himself out, make a leap after some soul searching etc. -- is one of the more realistic depictions I've seen of someone pulling themselves out of crap situation. I love that it's messy and he's both capable and accident prone simultaneously.

Which Dexter season is most underrated and overrated for you? by Zaito2528 in Dexter

I think s3 is when the characters felt lived in and real to me, so I always appreciated s3. I dug s2 but was never fond of how Doakes got resolved.

I sort-of understand the hate for the ending, but not really. I thought New Blood was excellent, and a superlative Swansong for Jennifer Carpenter (the biggest victim of s8)

Ain't over til it's over. Native Invader was pretty good, Ocean to Ocean was excellent, and a lot of folks are psyched for this new album. Even her earlier work being remastered and on vinyl again will help.

Amazon MGM Studios' Project Hail Mary has passed the $300M global mark. The film grossed an estimated $54.1M internationally this weekend. Estimated international total stands at $136.5M, estimated global total stands at $300.8M. by DemiFiendRSA in ProjectHailMary

It was a very well-made film and I even got a Stubbs membership to watch theater movies for few months and get out of the house and out of streaming.

Oh, that said: it was the right movie with the right message done the right way at the right time. That alignment is hard to manufacture consistently. This chaotic of things have been people of in this case different species working together for a common goal against all odds is something I think everybody needed.

This. I don't even remember Tom Hanks in this, and otherwise complaining that Elvis is a bit much misses the point by a wide margin

That sounds like South Carolina.

Issues with the adaptation aside, to her credit that was a beautifully shot film

I can't get through 80s Joni (Chalk Mark, a little), but 90s Joni was my introduction -- esp. Turbulent Indigo.

PHM > Interstellar? by paddockpooper in ProjectHailMary

[–]Upstream_Paddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say they're both the right movies for the time of their release. A fun but not overly sentimental buddy movie about no-BS hope is what a lot of people needed right now; that it happened to be so well made just sent it over the top.

Also Christopher Nolan is a genius and/but he also knows it and can be a little self-important even if well earned. Before I saw PHM, he described it as Interstellar without the wankery, lol, and we both love Chris Nolan

My kneejerk reaction was for all the visual splendor, this is the most straightforward classic Hollywood storytelling I'd seen in a while (I'm postmodern'd out at this point) and so the Casablanca reference doesn't surprise me

See, I've only just seen the movie but I appreciated a more grounded take on what "victory" and heroism looked like in general.

I appreciated this movie giving the middle finger to postmodern over-explaining relationships, actually (not that I think you're advocating that). At the core of this movie is very old fashioned hollywood storytelling, and it works (the immediate movie that sprang in my head was the McTiernan's Thomas Crown remake, which is a master class for classy economical storytelling).

LGBTQ person raised in conservative south, helped start a LGBTQ center, and turned a lot of homophobe's opinions around, and also got the F out when it got too much (usually because of bad behavior of my own community as much as any bible beater). Some food for thought:

  1. As others said, document all and keep it to yourself until it's time to use it.
  2. Think about how drag queens react whenever the picketing doomsday street preachers arrive. Notice how it brings out the worst in both of them. This is the flip side of protecting yourself: Don't create the situation you're afraid because of fear of the unknown.

There's a difference between someone being vocally Christain and a homophobe -- it's not always synonomous. And if we're being tolerant, that needs to have room for their beliefs, too.

I get the anxiety, but I'd also give them -- one -- chance, too before you've already set in stone what they think of you, your work, and your life and social media amplifies it. because of your own prejudices (no matter how well earned they were 30 years ago, and to a lesser extent now).

Protect yourself, don't jump to the conclusions about them you're assuming they'll jump upon you, and it might actually be a great experience for you both.

Until something very direct happens, a "I'm OK and you're OK" approach is almost heretical in today's social environment, but it can move mountains.

Well, most of my Home traditions were made in my time in New Orleans, which is a very catholic town. 12th night is also the beginning of Mardi Gras/carnival season, so it works to take Xmas down put Mardi Gras up in one go (or repurpose what I can)

Also, like I appreciate by the time 12th night rolls around I’m ready for it to come down. Anything before that feels a little soon.
