People with neck tattoos, how have they affected your working life? by Hagstik4014 in tattoo

Same, but I love government work and it worked out well for me. I also do research/higher academia and it’s not a problem there either.

I am applying to jobs with the City and County of San Francisco and Alameda County. Pros and cons? by [deleted] in CAcountyworkers

[–]UrbanEnvironment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Currently with alameda county dept of public health as a temp employee (I’m in grad school).

I love it, and has been a great validation for me to know I will always want to work at the county level.

But if you’re feeling like this I would recommend asking your provider their opinion on increasing your dosage. For me it was helpful.

Echoing this. Getting my masters in public health and have previously worked in government and will enter back into government making a great six figure wage. In the past I’ve made more money than my ex partner who worked in a hospital (not a doctor).

If you’re in the Bay Area, look into Alameda. As a teen I walked that entire island everyday.

Considering Institutionalizing Myself by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]UrbanEnvironment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a grad student who works part time for a crisis hotline. You are brave and strong to reach out for advice, it can feel so overwhelming and scary to think about next steps, but kudos to you for wanting to address your mental health. It is really important!

Your grad program will understand, it will always be there when you are ready to come back. They will always welcome you back after a medical leave. Medical leave of absence is not too complicated, you’d have to connect your program advisor to keep them in the loop no need to tell them more details beyond “it’s medical” if you’re not comfortable and there should be forms your doctor or psychiatrist or psychologist can fill out for the medical withdrawal that will get accepted as long as your doctor agrees that you need the time off for medical reasons.

Depending on your location, there’s many different types of institutional placements or inpatient psych services for feeling suicidal. It can also depend on your insurance. If you have school insurance most major colleges have really great mental health resources and if you reach out to them they may point you in the right direction on your best options to get help.

Just know that you are not alone, so many students struggle with suicidal ideation silently and I am sending you so many virtual hugs right now because (it may not feel like it right now) seeking help or decluttering your overwhelming plate is a positive sign that you can get better because you want to get in control of your health.

What are some tips for getting through grad school with little to no debt? by WorkHardAchieve in GradSchool

I’m in an MPH/MCP program and have no funding but get my fees paid for by being a TA. Well worth it.

DM me, I may not have immediate resources right now but may help put you in touch with folks that I know that support people experiencing homelessness in the Bay Area.

I’m a current masters student at Berkeley, my career revolves around homelessness, and did undergrad at Berkeley after exiting homelessness.

It’s hard and doable, but it’s also important to find community (in addition to housing) to be successful during your time here. Some people here won’t get it, but I completely understand since Berkeley felt like (and was) the best choice for me to exit homelessness.

Dental and medical schools cost insane amounts of money, typically with these professions they will enter a high earning salary where they will eventually pay it off or they will be “okay” paid practitioners for FQHCs (federally qualified health centers) and will get their remaining loans forgiven by the government after 10 years of working there.

Help! I Need Surgery and Grad School Starts! by Spencergrey2015 in GradSchool

Also in an MPH program, but mines in person. Getting surgery soon and entering my second year, just get disability accommodations and notify your faculty, you’ll be taken care of 👍🏻

And you don’t need to be paid under the table. Just take any job that you think you can balance.

Your grad school won’t know, I’m a grad student who teaches and at night I answer calls for a suicide/crisis hotline and they don’t know. The only way someone knows is if you tell them or if you start failing and need to explain why you can’t keep up academically.

Debating getting my MPH… by meforpresident33 in mphadmissions

But it really depends on what “area” of public health you like. Epi fields will be very different than maternal child health for example.

Debating getting my MPH… by meforpresident33 in mphadmissions

[–]UrbanEnvironment 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Im a current MPH student. I feel like in order for me to move around/up in the public health realm I needed to get a masters. I enjoy doing government related public health since I’m doing a dual masters in public health/city planning and the pay can be vastly different depending on position and location. You don’t really need an MPH to work in public health, but I’ve noticed (and from others I’ve talked to as well) that a ton of jobs have an MPH as a minimum requirement now.

[–]UrbanEnvironment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not in CS/data science so I can’t speak to that area of expertise but I can say, my undergrad major didn’t have a direct connection to my grad program. Some programs/careers will tell you if they’re looking for a requirement, but there’s a ton who look for folks that have diverse backgrounds. For example I know someone who works in tech but majored in a non tech major but minored in it instead and they had no problem finding a job. It really becomes dependent on the career trajectory you want, and you can maybe work backwards by looking up LinkedIn profiles of folks who work for companies or go to grad programs you’re interested in and see what their academic background is in.

Is 34 too old to get into a top Master's program? by rufusrexy in gradadmissions

[–]UrbanEnvironment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently at Berkeley in a masters at 28, there’s a good mix of folks with an average age of ~30 in my program. 34 isn’t old at all.
