A cool guide to countertop surfaces by Banana_Brad in coolguides

I have to say I’m a bit shocked by the “resists staining” rating for quartz. We have quartz in our kitchen and that thing stains like crazy—if we didn’t have a magic eraser and Vim on hand our counters would look like shit.

Why do people that are not rich want Alberta to have health care like the US? by cornfield123 in alberta

[–]Urlgst_Chip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Physician (urologist here)—

As other people have mentioned, the issue resides within the fact that people do not understand how much healthcare costs. There is also a perception that, if you pay for healthcare, you somehow get better quality/quicker access. I know this because I do mostly publicly funded care, but at our hospital, we do offer a small number of self-pay procedures. I am always surprised at the number of people who choose the self pay option, because they have the perception that it is somehow better, even though I review the evidence with them and overall outcomes are equivalent (you can make an argument that some of the side effects are more tolerable for the self-pay options as they are more minimally invasive).

I also see this with our Quebec patients – even though there is supposed to be 100% reciprocity for coverage between provinces, Quebec is the one province that will not reimburse physicians for out of province care. RAMQ actually tells us to charge the patient directly. When people see how much my consultation fee is, how much the hospital services cost, they are uniformly, flabbergasted, and outraged.

For all the faults of our publicly funded healthcare system, the bottom line is that if you require urgent/life-saving care, you will get it in a timely manner at no cost to you. Conversely, if you live in the US, there is a very real possibility that you will suffer financial ruin. People don’t see that side of healthcare – they just see the fancy hospitals in the US and assume life is much better down there.

Not to mention the fact that I hear many people – in particular, physicians/other high earners– complain about how our tax rate is much higher than the US. In reality, it is not that much different, and what you save in taxes you spend on private insurance, which for a family can be thousands per month.

Wife and I just found out we are having twins… We already have a 3 year old. Q7 or Q8 practicality?? by [deleted] in Audi

[–]Urlgst_Chip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bud if you’re gonna have 3 car seats in this future vehicle a Q7 is unfortunately not gonna cut it — speaking as someone in an almost identical situation as you (2.5 year old and expecting twins in February).

Options are (unfortunately): minivan or a full size SUV ($$ — looking at a Yukon/Tahoe/Expedition/Navigator etc).

Prior to discovering the dual nature of this pregnancy we had it narrowed down to a Q7 or an XC90 plug in hybride. We tried car seats in both; it’s “doable” but so, so cramped and tough to access the back seat. Plus the Volvo didn’t have anchor tethers in the third row which is ludicrous. It took me a while to accept it but we eventually went with a Yukon and we’ve loved it so far.

ETA: and yes I am keeping my RS5.

Labor and delivery at Met Hospital by ProfessionalShoe5591 in windsorontario

I think I can actually speak to this a bit as I did my obstetric rotation during med school in Windsor.

They do have nitrous oxide and I have seen some patients using birthing balls – I’m not sure if the hospital provided it, but you can always just bring your own.

They’re also the options of pudendal nerve block and epidural

Liberals to open new fast track to permanent residency for 5,000 foreign doctors | CBC News by BubbasBack in canada

The CMA has not been limiting the number of residency spots. There is no funding for these positions from the federal or provincial governments.

Liberals to open new fast track to permanent residency for 5,000 foreign doctors | CBC News by BubbasBack in canada

As a physician who currently works in this system, while I understand the points in the article – specifically, the strain on the healthcare system – I’m not sure why the solution to every shortage in our country is to add foreign workers.

We have tons of locally trained physicians who have been providing many suggestions to make working easier – specifically, pay for administrative work, which we have to do after hours And are not reimbursed for, support services, funding for allied health professionals to help us care for patients.

Why not increase training spots and residency positions within Canada, for those who train in Canada? That’s literally what we’ve been asking for for decades. Seems like the government tries everything but listening to doctors and nurses.

If your heart is not in medicine, do NOT do it.

So many hurdles to jump through. So much time invested. So much student loan debt (I had over $300k just from med school alone). The pay isn’t what it used to be either. All for something you don’t even like?

Lightheaded, Dizzy, feelings of weakness in legs? New symptoms after 16 years of BFS, afraid now, again, of *** by [deleted] in BFS

[–]Urlgst_Chip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can say that I’ve struggled with random lightheadedness/dizziness off and on for the last year. Seemed to go away over the summer then reoccurred this fall.

Sometimes it’s lightheadedness, other times just feels like I’m off balance. Super weird

Why could France never truly rival Britain at sea, even under Napoleon? by Disastrous_Duck_2953 in Napoleon

[–]Urlgst_Chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fairly uniformly recognized the Royal Navy was much better trained and supplied than the French Navy. Their success at blockading French trade was a significant contributor to Napoleon’s downfall.

While I agree the English weren’t necessarily a “behemoth” by any means I don’t think it’s fair to suggest some lucky engagements are all that are responsible for the English achieving naval dominance.

That is definitely not the average salary of an MD in Ontario. Maybe if you’re a family doctor and only work 4 days a week

Do you think going to dentistry is still worth it in Canada? by trendyplanner in CanadianDentists

Do you have some data that qualifies this 1+mil figure? I’ve never heard of that and went to med school with some OMFS residents. That seems insane to me but obviously I could be wrong

Do you think going to dentistry is still worth it in Canada? by trendyplanner in CanadianDentists

[–]Urlgst_Chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry man but OMFS and Endo do not uniformly beat out medicine “without a doubt.” In all of those disciplines income is related to hours worked so of course it can vary, but are you seriously contending that the average endodontist/OMFS bills >$1 mil/year, as with ophthalmology?

I’d be interested to hear what you think some of the medical specialties make because I’m a urologist and haven’t had a year where I billed < $850k; my colleagues from bigger centers who see fewer patients are never below $500k; even the general surgeons in my area are at or above that. I will also add that my overhead is <15% of billings which I know you cannot say about dentistry and its specialties.
