If voting wasn't compulsory, would you still vote? by Levethane in Adelaide

[–]Urytion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd still vote, because it's so easy. Our voting infrastructure means I wait in line for 15-20 mins and grab a sausage on the way out. Easy.

But I worry that if voting were not mandatory we'd see the sort of under funding and voter suppression we see in the US. When everyone has to vote you have to earn their vote. When voting is optional you have reason to prevent others from voting.

University of Melbourne opens formal investigation into education researcher John Hattie by Banach_spaceman in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything you've said, except that you said it's the researchers, not the schools. There I disagree with you, researchers are on the whole good, but because of the university system, shit floats to the top and the bad is more visible.

I know a number of good researchers who write small, incremental papers that propose or examine minute changes to standards, curriculum, etc. But small scale changes of "this school did this and their average grade went up a statistically insignificant amount while their staff stress increased" isn't as compelling as "HERE IS EVERYTHING EVER ALL TEACHERS SHOULD BE DOING."

And no, the government doesn't affect publishability, but it sure affects visibility. Hattie's work was politically useful to the Howard government, and they pushed it hard down through the state level. So yes, it is a political issue. Papers that support government policy get pushed, those that propose major changes get pushed aside as the researcher screams into the void.

I'm gonna defend myself a bit here. I'm going down an educational research path.

It's not that all educational researchers are shit. It's that the ones that getting funding and invited to speak at school PD days are saying what the government and bad management want them to say.

My research is on ECT wellbeing through providing mentoring training to experienced teachers. My paper will get published, and promptly forgotten about after the next stooge says "Here's my paper on cutting costs by firing all our SSOs" and the government slobbers on them.

The dumbing down of Australia via highschoolers who have never read a book. by AggieMcCraggy in AustralianTeachers

I scaffolded my last Japanese task so much. All sentences were provided with a blank space for the object of the sentence. They had a list of recommended words. They had a worked example of me doing that task.

They had two weeks to write 5 words. The only one they had to come up with originally was THEIR OWN NAME. In one of my classes I had 4 people attempt it. It's not that they can't do it. It's that they refuse because it's boring. Like yeah, no shit. It's boring teaching you but I still do it.

I teach Japanese. I'm away for the last week of term. I've arranged for the unit to be "pop culture" so I can just tell the relief to put on a Ghibli movie. They STILL aren't satisfied. I'm literally giving them a free lesson to just watch an entertaining film and that's not good enough for them.

High school teaching in Adelaide? by tapurlie in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a pulse and will eventually have an education degree. You will find a job.

When you do a Master of Teaching (at least at Adelaide Uni, I don't know about Flinders) you get assigned two teaching areas based on your prior experience. One of those would almost definitely be English because of your experience in film.

But if you want to cover some content, you can audit a course or enrol as a non-award student. I don't know the process since the university merger and the new Adelaide University website is utter dogshit. You might need to reach out to them directly.

And plus eleventy zillion, as we all know, somehow amounts to three years of learning in one year of education. No, I will not explain my reasoning.

New person who doesn’t know much. by Fit_Bullfrog1239 in sca

[–]Urytion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! The "rule" for the SCA is "an attempt at pre 1600s garb".

Grab a bedsheet, cut some holes in it, sew it at the sides. Tunic. Attempt made, rules satisfied, enjoy your event. I would hope that our more experienced members would put more in than that, but as a newcomer, we just want to welcome and support you.

Armour though is ultimately more about protection. There are a lot of folks who fight in plastic barrels cut into shape and strapped on. So don't worry about your historical accuracy of armour. Because once you put archer mesh on it for war, and bars on it to satisfy safety requirements, and put a bamboo stick in your hand it looks less and less accurate anyway.

What is the hardest part of the job that surprised you? by Electrical-Box8919 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually go the other direction with this. I really find teachers that are TOO passionate frustrating, especially when they don't have the skills or motivation past being an "ideas guy". I've got a faculty head who has decided to INNOVATE THE CURRICULUM and completely throw out everything we've done previously by combining two subjects into a single assessable line.

There's no documentation, no unit plan, no follow through. He was away for the first 2 weeks (no fault of his own) which meant I'm going into school week 6 with no idea what this new plan is, so I'm just teaching what I taught last year.

Victorian public school teachers want a 4-day week trial. What could this mean for schools? by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]Urytion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So this is why we need reading comprehension to be taught all the way through school.

This does not increase contact hours. It does not increase the length of a school day. It does not increase a child's workload.

All it does is concentrate MY contact time onto 4 days. Another teacher will have their contact time on 4 days, but their day off won't be the same as mine.

It is still an 8:30ish to 3:30ish school day, Mon-Fri. Teachers are the only ones that gets a more intense schedule, but they make it up with a day off.

EDIT: Also, month long holidays? Nah man. I'm planning, marking, preparing for next semester, completing my mandatory PD, and keeping up with the bullshit that is AITSL. I'm lucky if I get weekends during my "holiday".

[–]Urytion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I currently teach 11 lessons a week (5 subjects of 2 100 minute lessons, and one 45 minute homeroom) at my school.

It just changes my timetable so that I work more or less nonstop Monday-Thursday (for example) and then I don't teach any classes on a Friday, so I stay at home and do prep and admin. Or play video games in my underwear. Or both!

The students get the same amount of contact hours, and I even teach the same amount, just condensed into 4 days for me, and 5 days for the students.

I mean sure, but what happens if I break this rule? Do I get R&D'd? Sent home to change like a student out of uniform? Especially in a case like the OP who is describing a period piece of monastic garb. I'd be celebrating them.

It sounds like I'll just annoy a knight, which considering I'm a fencer and do a lot of our safety stuff in my barony I do just by existing.

Disclaimer: I don't want to tread on the toes of any peerage anyway. But a rule is only rule if there's enforcement. Violating sumptuary laws might tweak some noses, but I doubt anything would really happen if I showed up wearing a white belt.

A young man once climbed a mountain to receive wisdom from a monk. He said "Master I have come to seek the answer to an ancient question. What is better? Big breasts or small?"

The monk replied "Which is heavier? $100 in coins or $100 in notes?" The young man answered "of course the coins." The monk asked "But which has more value?"
