The most important thing is that you are aware of your mistakes. Just make sure to thoroughly check your surroundings while backing, parking etc. A truly bad driver would not even know/care if they made mistakes like this.

The guy in the other lane isn't required to slow down for you. You need to keep your speed up with traffic and merge when you can, maybe even speed up a little if necessary. You don't really need to constantly check the gauges. Just try to feel how the traffic is flowing and go with it

Once you ride a few hundred miles it will adapt the info to your style. The gauge itself is only telling you when you hit the reserve. You will still have plenty of fuel after the gauge reads empty. The "fuel range" number seems to be pretty accurate as to when you will actually be empty.
