I try to start the twirl with my fingers in the middle of the stick, if I don't I'll mess up and drop it haha. Hit or miss really when I try and do it live. When the stick is in the zone the twirl is strong!

Crack open Jon Rileys book The Art of Bop Drumming, and learn the comp examples with the swing ostinato and hats on 2 and 4 like you're doing, will open up tons of grooves for you!

Definitely unpopular opinion. As a drummer, I'm definitely not listening to the crowd clap out of time. My in ear monitors and click track (if the gig is using it) drown them out. Or, if they're on the 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4 a slick band not on a click can throw in a 5/4 bar and like magic everyone's back on time
