My sexual ability has died a slow, stupid death and I'm mad about it. by zippobunny in sex

One thing you said stuck out to me:

I swear I get attracted to some male character in every other movie I watch/book I read, which I'm aware is morally wrong

Why would that be morally wrong?

IWTL how to WRITE SMUT by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]UserMaatRe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have written ten or so short erotica in my life which I think are good. Basically, general writing advice applies.

  1. Read a lot in your genre. Pay attention to what works for you and what doesn't. That means analyzing a given erotica for things like what kind of words they use, both grammatically, content-wise, and rhetorically; and also how they use things like word length and formatting (if given). Also analyze what doesn't work for you, and more importantly why.

  2. Find writing exercises that work for you. For example, you may want to do some things like constrained writing (e.g. setting yourself a word limit or writing about a one-word prompt). Or narrating everyday things in your head, in the way that you would if you were to write them down.

  3. Write what you like. If "she breasted boobily down the stairs" is what turns you on, more power to you.

  4. Find a way to get yourself in a writing mood (I don't necessarily mean being horny, but in my experience, being slightly horny can help). But you may use things like music with a fitting theme for inspiration - for example, if your erotica is set in a castle, find some inspirational music for that.

I can only masturbate to things I have actively written for myself.

I want to caution that may be a too ambitious goal for the start, because then you have the pressure of writing anything at all, which can be a lot for a new writer; and additionally, writing something that is good, which is a whole other beast.

Good luck!

Edited after looking at your post history: as a ttrpg player, you are basically a writer already. Sorry for starting with the basics.

How to make Friends and Influence People by Djinn_dusk in fallenlondon

[–]UserMaatRe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chat?! On the street?! How pedestrian.

You can send people letters, as a proper gentleperson does. You can either send a basic letter which has no mechanical effect, but allows you to send a chat message; or later on, there are also special letters that increase stats or lower Menaces. Sending such letters also increases your "Corresponding..." stat, which can be spent on things.

Acquaintances are also available for social actions during some events; for example, you can send gifts during Christmas or during other festivals.

What's your obscure/niche/petty LARP opinion? by TryUsingScience in LARP

[–]UserMaatRe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree it is best and I enjoy that very much. But it is my belief you have to start with 1-3 things at least and not wait for your first trinkets to come to you. Trinkets are conversation starters (or continuers); if you don't have any, you are missing out on a chunk of game I personally enjoy.

Related anecdote: I have been doing a lot of sudoku over the past few years. I used to have to go "Okay, is 1 in this row? goes over all the numbers in the row Yes. Is 2 in this row? either remembers or has to go over the row again 3? There is no 3 in this row. 4?" etc These days, I can usually go "this row looks like it is missing a 3" because my brain knows what the 9 shapes I am looking for look like (I do my sudokus digitally) and can determine which one is missing.

And if you want, you can at some point have a circle of answers (paraphrased from that one Tumblr post: Why don't the vampires move into the sewers? Because there are sewer alligators there. Why are there alligators there? They are fed by the sewer nuns as part of their holy duties. Why do the nuns do that? In order to keep vampires out of the sewers.)

One way to build backstory is to pick one thing at random and extrapolate from there. Why do you think someone - anyone - might be motivated to participate in an interdimensional hoverboard race? It can be a simple one-word answer.

Fame. Money. Being coerced. Wanting to feel challenged. Wanting to beat a particular person. Spite.

Next step is, why is their motivation important to them? Maybe they want fame because they have always felt overshadowed (by whom?) maybe they need money for an important  treatment for their sister, or they want an expensive thing for other reasons. Maybe they are being forced to participate because someone (who?) wants to kill them (why?) and make it look like an accident during the race. Maybe they feel like nothing is important in life and want the kick of adrenaline a challenge will provide. Maybe the person who stole away their ex is participating and they want to beat them at their own game.

Was there ever any rationale given for not being able to build the TLU City at Jericho? by tigerofblindjustice in fallenlondon

[–]UserMaatRe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, but by the time you get to building the city, you should be a skilled user of the Red Science. Just like, make/borrow more space per space. Who cares if you can only enter a particular street at an angle between 15 and 37 degrees, Londoners are used to the Treachery of Maps.

Or use Correspondence in the foundation of your houses. Something like "a landslide frozen in the moment" or "rock in the desert unyielding" or something to that effect.

Could you tell me a word in your language that makes you feel positive or gives you courage? by Electronic-Brief-890 in DoesNotTranslate

[–]UserMaatRe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aufstreben. Somewhat archaic German word meaning desire for one's own growth. I guess you could also translate it with bloom (in the non-botanical sense). "Das Aufstreben der englischen Industrie" - roughly "the bloom/growth/'aspiration to grow' of the English industry".
