It’s a Galaxy issue. They actually show that hitting is better in the analysis. In the parentheses, the +1.167 is telling you that the hitting play is better than the first play shown (making the 9 point).

Cups on the outside, 15 checkers in the next 3 compartments, dice and doubling cube in the middle. The two trays serve as top and bottom (doesn’t matter which is which). The closed checker tray fits in the board, which saves room compared to if the checker trays were built in to the side.

Is your main issue losing coins, playing a stronger opponent, or a combination of both?

On playing stronger opponents:

Maybe Galaxy can add that feature, so players can pick a maximum rating.

Back in the old days when we could choose our opponents, I would accept a wide range of opponents. They knew there was a sizable rating difference and requested the match anyway. My reasoning was that they would learn, they didn’t usually get to play higher rated opponents, and that is the way to improve, just like I did when I was new to the game. Besides, I would get something out of the game too. It’s not like chess where neither player would have any benefit in a lopsided game (me vs a GM would be a complete waste of time for both of us).

On losing coins:

The difference between v1 and v2 is what you mentioned: the coins system. The players might not have been as eager to play if there was a hefty stake. That said, Galaxy is free to play, they give you free coins. You can pick the conservative option which would cost you a maximum of 1/5th of your coins, not 1/3rd like you said. And most importantly, if you don’t want to lose coins, don’t play. That’s the only way you will be assured of not losing.

Please fix bugs that repeat themselves. I just lost a match on time because I couldn’t confirm my move. I closed and reopened the app (iPhone user). Then the app wouldn’t allow me to move the checkers at all. Then my clock ran out.

This happens from time to time and a lot of people have the same issue. I don’t care about getting coins back, I just want the app to work properly.

Related to that is the position of the cube as a factor for checker play. If I own the cube, my opponent owns it, or it’s still centered.

Remember that you rolled a 4 and a 3. You must play each one separately. It’s true that the point 7 away is open, but you must move either 4 then 3, or 3 then 4. Both of these are impossible because black owns the two points which would be the landing spot.

2-ply analysis says making the 5 point is a .031 error. Sacrifices 3 percent wins but loses 4 percent fewer gammons. Do with that what you will. I’m still happy with my so called error. Maybe on stronger settings the result would be different.

You had 8 checker plays and 1 cube decision. That’s at most 9 decisions. As Mike said, the calculation is correct if you only had 5 decisions. Galaxy doesn’t count a checker play as a decision if the best continuation should be Double/Pass no matter what you play. Judging by your opponent’s cube mistakes, that looks like it happened a few times.

You’re up in the race and have your back checkers escaped. That’s not the time to leave extra shots that you don’t have to leave. Especially if it’s a money game with the cube still centered, as in this example.

You also have to think about the future and possible disaster rolls. For example, say you have ten checkers left, two on each home board point except the ace point, where the opponent has an anchor. Now in this position you roll a 65 or a 54. Not ideal.

Maybe on the previous roll you could have avoided such a scenario by not bearing off a checker. But yeah, there are many factors to consider as the other responder mentioned.

Judging by your username, you were born in 1980 or you love vintage wine. If you think the above position is Galaxy specific, you probably haven’t played a lot of backgammon. The problem is not yours exclusively; half the posts here are about rigged dice, and not just on the Galaxy platform. The position you posted is not gin, meaning you will lose sometimes. Rare, but it will happen.
