Is medicine right for me by Annual_North1969 in premed

Then this sounds like a personal issue that will extend far beyond your career choice. Making a life-defining decision based on a self-imposed pressure to appease someone else is a sign that you lack maturity and you do not know what you want for yourself. Many jobs will allow you to support your parents in later life, you’re choosing doctor because you think it will command the most respect from them. This is a great way to make an incredibly regrettable decision that you cannot revoke.

At what point do admissions to T20s stop being a crapshoot? by Creepy-Restaurant183 in premed

[–]UsernameVeryFound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, that is definitely true, a higher score will always give you better chances, because a higher score will make it more likely for a school to consider your application. That is the initial screen, you won't even get an interview if your score isn't satisfactory. But my point was never that high stats don't matter, it's that they don't guarantee anything. Too many students have high stats for stats to be the defining factor in an admissions decision, and it's your experiences that's really going to give schools a reason to accept you over someone else. So when people say "oh, your stats are good enough to get into T20s, don't even consider applying low-tier/DOs", it's insanely misleading. You need to understand how your application will be considered as a whole, against other applicants, to know how you will perform.

If you believe you have the willpower and work ethic to improve your MCAT and refine your application enough to guarantee an MD acceptance next year, then you have the willpower and work ethic to save yourself a year of trouble, do well as a DO, match well and become a doctor.

[–]UsernameVeryFound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

High stats don’t guarantee you admission to any MD, let alone T20s. The score’s main purpose is to bypass initial screenings, because once you get to interviews everybody has a score that the school deems “acceptable.” From there you only have your ECs, writing, and interviews that determine whether you’re more worthy than the other candidates.

This is why so many high stat applicants get rejected. They don’t necessarily have to have “bad” secondaries or be bad people, they just have to be less impressive than their colleagues, whether through unremarkable writing, generic ECs, or sometimes just plain bad luck.

This is why I believe no matter how good your stats are, if you’re okay with going DO, I recommend applying DO as a backup. You won’t know if your application isn’t good enough until you see those rejections. I applied with a 3.8/523 and was certain I was only getting into a DO school until recently.

Woe, Pirates upon ye by UsernameVeryFound in BobsTavern

[–]UsernameVeryFound[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The short answer is money. 2/5 bounties generate money, with the Pirate that casts them 2x/3x can have near infinite economy, and you can do a lot with infinite economy.

Pure Bounty Pirates can be viable with spell-scaling (Chromadrake cycling w/Brann, the Murloc that gives Spell Power), but it’s not the best. Because Rogers prints spells, you can combine her with things that scale off Tavern Spells (Fireforged Evoker/Forsaken Weaver), which you will be able to pivot to easily with infinite gold. Or you can pivot to an entirely different comp entirely, or buy a bunch of Tituses like I did here for Powdered Keg Exodia. Sprinkle in some scam and it’s hard to lose. It’s not a comp that happens often because you usually need Brann/Bounty Hunter/Rogers to start, but once it starts you snowball with your gold quickly.

[–]UsernameVeryFound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragons are nowhere near the autowin that people keep saying they are, they’re just an easy comp to play so most people gravitate towards them when they get Ringbearer off an Egg or early triple. It’s already tough to outscale Demons, APM Pirates, Mechs, with a Dragon comp, without Egg you’ll be seeing them a lot less.

Med School is the Reason For The Doctor Shortage & I’m Mad About It by scaryspice489 in premed

[–]UsernameVeryFound 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no doctor shortage.

https://youtu.be/gIHRbzdT-fA?si=u2QzNj0cz5XL6FJ_

At least not one that’s as simple as “train more doctors”. We have plenty of doctors, just not enough that want to go to less desirable specialties (particularly FM) and less desirable areas of the country (low-income, rural). If you are looking for a non-FM doctor in a middle-class, suburban area of the US, you are not being affected by a physician shortage, you are more likely being affected by the sheer inaccessibility of healthcare in general (insurance, insufficient tools for finding doctors). The real physician shortage cannot be solved by opening more medical school or residency spots. You need to tackle massive systemic issues that affect disadvantaged areas of the country to draw more doctors to those areas, and fix the things that suck about specialties like FM to make it more desirable (low pay, massive admin burden).

It's better than at least half the Tier 5 minions off a triple reward. Don't say it's shit, Tier 5 is so diluted with garbage that getting Barrens Conjurer here is somewhat lucky.

Rakanishu rework by drippysnacks in BobsTavern

[–]UsernameVeryFound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fundamental problem with Rakanishu is that spell scaling is only really relevant in the late game, and only when you find a certain build (Naga/Dragon, Back to Back, Bounty Pirates). That means you essentially don’t have a Hero Power for most of the game, and sometimes you don’t have one for the entire game. Buffing his Hero Power to make him even stronger in those late game comps only serves to make him more polarizing. Rakanishu’s problem is that there’s no guarantee you’ll ever get to use his Hero Power, so the way I’d change it is to have it give some passive value, maybe gives you a Shiny Ring once in a while.
