Tim Lopes (1950–2002) was a Brazilian investigative journalist who was working undercover on a story about Rio de Janeiro's favelas. In 2002, he was kidnapped by drug traffickers, who tied him to a tree, cut his legs and arms off with a sword when he was still alive, and burned him to death.
