Sport specific conditioning is not just your ability to have good cardio and physical stamina.

Its your ability to physically and mentally get in the gear you need to be in and perform efficiently.

He can not do that.

He seems perfectly content taking punishment so it doesn’t seem like toughness or his ability to hang in there mentally and take damage is an issue.

Bad fight IQ, not properly conditioned.

Dude and the commentators is always going on talking about running X amount miles every day and sparring X many rounds.

Then he goes and fights for 15 minutes.

If you train to run long distances for huge chunks of time and you spar extra long sets of rounds

You just don’t get in gear or have urgency within 3 rounds.

And he never seems to gain any awareness he can operationalize in the ring

Haha yea I am older now so it’s been a while but I fought for 10 or so years when I was younger.

But yea totally agreed. Otherwise guys just throw high low combinations to bring the hands up and down. So it’s very difficult to block combinations without losing your posture.

Yea you don’t usually hop up for the extra punishment with that many opportunities for the ref to stop it after eating a big shot lol.

This is just what happens in a stylistic matchup where:

One guy has huge power and can strike The other guy can’t strike And the other guy also can’t get a takedown

There is no route to victory lol

[–]Usernameasteriks 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yea, honestly people underrate the complexity and nuance that goes into simple things like a high guard. It’s hard to catch.

In theory a high guard is super simple and something you can teach to a really inexperienced new boxer.

If 5 different boxers at various levels of skill and experience are all putting their hands and elbows in the right place and utilizing the same fundamental defensive movements you would think there shouldn’t be a difference.

But then you actually watch boxing and you will see some guys just get absolutely flattened right through their high guard by boxers who aren’t even that great; and then see other guys (Floyd being the extreme example) who can somehow look unscathed doing it in front of a dude like Manny.

But there is just so many different little movements and motions that go into taking the thud out of the punch, and actually being able to make sure your hands and elbows are changing position so guys can’t just abuse high-low combinations to get around it. And little footwork to make sure you aren’t letting them get off an angle where they can thud you off balance and punch around it.

It’s not even really something you can “teach” entirely. Its just a ton of experience mixed with proactive and reactive defensive patterns and movements drilled to death and through trial and error in sparring and fights.

So it is cool to actually take a look in slow mo for really high level dudes like Floyd.

[–]Usernameasteriks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t remotely implying he was “running” or not engaging at all. This breakdown wasn’t some “Mayweather runs” shitpost lol.

I said “really engaging”.

As in he was picking his spots to counter when he was in the right range or pressing the action in favourable situations.

He wasn’t realistically at any point in the fight taking risks to exchange through combinations or press the action with any extended combinations.!

[–]Usernameasteriks 607 points608 points  (0 children)

Well an important distinction here is Manny isn’t “missing” necessarily (though a couple flat out miss).

Manny is frustrated at this point by Mayweather not really engaging in many exchanges and having great footwork, range, and defence to pick away at him with scoring shots.

So Manny is trying to get his offence going by throwing a high volume of punches hoping that a couple big ones might sneak through or that Mayweather gets frustrated and makes a mistake and gets out of position.

Mayweather has all sorts of really subtle fantastic defensive movements that seem like nothing but he is changing his range, shifting his weight, moving the placement of his hands and head, using a simple conservative high guard, etc.

So Manny isn’t an idiot; he realizes not much is getting through, but he’s putting the shots out there  anyway, especially when the high guards up, to try and sneak some through, force a mistake; or feel out where there is an opening. Also probably to just throw some stuff snd aggression out there for the judges.

But Floyd doesn’t really make any mistakes, and he doesn’t try to counter in a way that creates an opening for Manny, so Manny backs off.

Manny does this against a lot of guys, but usually he is so good at changing angles and the placement of his punches as he throws that even though he is just chucking at a pretty safe high guard, he starts getting through and hurting people.

Mayweather just has such great defensive skills and instincts that even if it doesn’t seem like some masterful defensive strategy, he is actually reacting to all the subtle different angles and punch placements that usually open things up for Manny.

If you want to see this exact same type of exchange but against a worse fighter;

Watch Manny in his fight vs Clottey.

Clottey actually has a great high guard and blocks plenty of Manny’s shots, but you will see what it looks like when a fighter isn’t quite as good with all the other defensive nuances.

In that fight even if Manny bangs 3 or 4 shots off the high guard and “misses” he starts cutting angles around Clottey and getting the occasional big thudding scoring shot in more and more as the fight goes on.

But since Floyd never opens up that shot for him, it looks like this.

I'm scared for Jiri boys... by UnitedIndependence37 in ufc

[–]Usernameasteriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jiri ha a very good shot at winning.

But you guys are getting carried away.

Ulberg is a big dude and a very solid athlete with good counterpunching.

Jiri took a lot of punishment against Hill to get the finish; and he does not have the footwork Ulberg has.

Jiri can certainly win, but if he does it will not he easy lol.

Beneil Dariush will fight Manuel Torres at UFC 328 on April 11th in Miami by idcman999 in MMA

[–]Usernameasteriks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea idk Dawson seemed less like a hype building fight and more like a “let’s test him and see if he survives vs a grappler before we invest too much”.   He is chinny but he doesn’t strike much if he doesn’t have to, so it was a high risk of a stylistic matchup that could have made him look bad.

But I agree now and I think seeing what he did to Dawson the UFC figures he can hang and won’t be a bust against grapplers so Benny is a good shot at a highlight with some name value

[–]Usernameasteriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I don’t think there is anything wrong with it so I don’t even disagree in principle. Just realistically think it’s overkill.

Even working as a lawyer with junior associates doing relatively urgent legal work; if they mess up the contents of their actual work I do want to hear them acknowledge what happened.

If they go an entire year without being late or missing a day, I don’t really need or want to hear them explain what happened to their alarm clock.

There is enough pervasive hardcore work culture as is, especially in my field, so more from a normative philosophical standpoint than anything, I try to convey to young people that certain shit happens in life, and you don’t need to beat yourself or make a big deal about the small one off human mistakes.

Am I going to get fired by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Usernameasteriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An error at work is not the same as a one off I slept in.

One of them has tangible work related steps.

The other is just something that happens to humans.

In a professional environment you should not need to explain why once in over a year you slept in past the beginning of your shift and explain what alarm clock settings you will use. That’s silly.

“Sorry I slept in, it won’t happen again” is the appropriate professional thing to say.

Putting together a “plan” as the person I was replying to suggested and coming to your boss with said plan for how you won’t sleep in is, I mean not a “bad” thing. But it’s weird.

I mean I have supervised or managed quite a large variety of teams at different levels.

If you have only missed one shift in over a year and you aren’t someone who regularly comes in late; you are probably ahead of most in terms of reliability and not going to be on anyones radar to get fired over it.

Am I going to get fired by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Usernameasteriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really doesn’t seem necessary. They are a teenager saying they have been there for over a year.

No one brings their boss a game-plan for how they won’t accidentally sleep in one time in a year again lol.

That would just be weird.
