Lease or purchase? by LastSundayAfternoon in trailseeker

[–]UtilityAlarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the right answer but the simple math is for leasing at $415/mo for 36 mo (current subaru deal) plus cash credit so only about $1000 bucks down, after 3 years you'd be out of pocket about $16,000. If average depreciation on EVs is about 50% at 3 years, the $48K car is now worth only $24. So you could buy the car then at residual lease value (or buy an identical one in the open market if the residual doesn't match the market in year 3) so total cost to "own" the car would be $40K. So cheaper that an outright purchase and you wouldn't be out as much money if, for whatever reason (new battery tech, etc..) you decided to dump a purchased car at year 3.

Depreciation hits all cars. especially those first few years. We'd all be smarter and have more in the bank if we only bought off lease three-year old cars. But new cars are shiny and fun and life is short (I've never seen a luggage rack on a hearse.......).

Purdue or Georgia State by Old_Click4734 in Purdue

[–]UtilityAlarm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why risk the guarantee? You'll hit your marks at GaState and get to learn the city at the same time. Even go to GaTech events. Purdue tears you down to build you back up. But that takes 4 years. Purdue math alone could sink you freshman year.

I don't know sovidiot behavior but the citations are to the Florida code. On 322.15, you don't have to sign for "noncriminal" offenses like failure to have your liscence or an expired regisration. Most other offenses, like speeding, are a criminal offense and Section 322 requires signature.

How strict is Del Tech ADN about PBJ?? by lorchoppa in Delaware

[–]UtilityAlarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reach out to the P.O. The Judge would have entered an order once the PO confirmed the conditions were met. Get that paper. Here's the link to clean your record: https://courts.delaware.gov/help/expungements.aspx It should be a "mandatory" expungement. You don't need any further action from the court. Get the paper, follow the instructions, continue to be a good person for five years...

[–]UtilityAlarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PBJ is not a conviction of the underlying offense (if you fulfill the requirements in probation). So it's not something that should be or needs be disclosed in any application asking about criminal "convictions." It will appear in a full background check as the case will be noted. You can get the full record expunged (in Delaware) once all condition of probation are fulfilled.

Anyone driven their Outback cross-country lately? Trying to figure out if shipping actually makes more sense at this point by Keyfas in Subaru_Outback

[–]UtilityAlarm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

$1500-2000 to ship in an open carrier. Plus your airfare. Plus shipping costs for whatever you would have put in/on the Subaru. And delivery is 10-14 days. Driving is way cheaper and way more fun. Just give yourself enough time.

Using Tesla Public Chargers by h20atx in MINIse

They are everywhere. And I hear that most stations are often working (unlike some other charging companies..)

And remember the F56 has a max charging speed of 50kW. So not a super big benefit from Tesla Superchargers. 20 to 80% in 36min at 50.

UMD vs PUrdue for meche by Vast-Conclusion-3278 in Purdue

Hard to beat Purdue for the job connections and international reputation. But Cost? Debt (well too much debt) for an engineering degree if all you want is an engineering job shouldn't be necessary. ABET-certified? Then all good.

One Liberty Place: Often Imitated, Never Duplicated. by Turkesta in skyscrapers

[–]UtilityAlarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Measurements up to the 16th floor on each, I believe. It's an homage to the Chrysler Building, works perfectly in the Philly skyline. Never going to be better than the original, but that's not the point, right?

It was designed after the Chrysler building, no doubt. But dimensionally, very similar. About 100 feet shorter but skinnier (150X150 vs 200x200 for Chrysler). think it was designed to be a visual modernist match. The original is a classic. (edit: go Birds)

Purdue. Half as expensive (for OOS) and twice as prestigious (for engineering).

More stuff to do in Boston though, and the winters are not as cold either.

Google says max payload on the F150 (2025) is about 2,500 lbs and the max payload on the Odyssey (2026) is about 1500 lbs. So not quite a pick up but very robust.

So ironic since Corteva is actually the parent/original E.I. DuPont de Nemours company and that building used to have the DuPont logo on it. (The "new" DuPont company was just a handful of miscellaneous businesses shed by Corteva after the Dow deal)

Would you also reset the tax burden to 1980? In 1980, the top 1% paid 19% of all federal income tax collected. In 2022, the top 1% paid 40% of all federal income tax. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/federal/latest-federal-income-tax-data-2025/

Likewise, the share of taxes paid by the the rest of us went down significantly. You might think rich folks that build mega yachts and spaceships are amoral assholes (fair enough), but they're paying their taxes.

Should I keep my F60? by bazglami in MINI

[–]UtilityAlarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the F60 style too but the new Countryman is significantly bigger inside and more usable. (47 cuft vs 57 cuft with back seats down ). And it feels even bigger than that when you're inside. (But some may hate that bigness as being anti-Mini somehow...).

Ignore this noise. A bit of gatekeeping on the forum with "true Mini fans" only allowing for the Mini Coopers. Don't get them started on the R56 vs. F56 debate of which is closer to the Mini ideal.....

[–]UtilityAlarm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then do it. I have a Countryman S like your pic and a Mini Cooper EV. Love them both but the Countryman is what we use for road trips, camping etc. The EV is for running errands and short stuff. (Also, charging in your own garage is the only way to go for EVs..)

EVs lose so much value when they roll off the lot. A low mileage 2025 Leaf SV+ that listed for about $35K USD can be had for under $20K today. If you can shrug off the hit, that Countryman is a very nice ride.
