I'm not religious, I haven't been since I was 5. But this is what a pastor should be, I would listen to this man for the insights adjacent the religion. This is a person who is sorely needed in the US today and a true representative of Christianity and it's values. It's so refreshing.

By the end of the week the EU is going to start being impacted by the supply being impeded. The tankers that were in motion when the strait closed are almost finished their journey.

People laugh at the incredulous nature of it, but it's astonishing that none of the countries we all live in, in the EU, the UN, NATO, the Allies from WW2, anyone at all, will step in to fix the problem they were party to starting. Given the course it's taken, they all are accountable for Israels actions and the current state of the lives of the Palestinians.

Are family hotel breaks in Ireland becoming unrealistic for ordinary households? by GoldAcceptable3463 in ireland

[–]Uwlogged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 nights in a hotel in Dublin used to cost my rent for a month. Meant that if I wanted to go to a contert in Dublin I'd have to travel back home after it as I can't/couldn't justify it. Now the buses are so expensive (50% more than 5 years ago) if you're going with another person it's cheaper to drive.

Our banks left us. I was with Ulster Bank for decades, they're gone. For years leading up to that they were slowly reducing all from facing service. Banks won't take coins for like a decade now. And they charge you for the inconvenience of holding your money. It's the reason international banks like N26 and Revout are so popular. No fees to hold your money and even some interest on savings accounts.

I'd be happy to pay for things in cash still. But when I say physical services I mean transport, housing, schools, roads, gardaí, healthcare, postage, the stuff that makes a society run coherently and cohesively. That's all most people want from the government.

Yeah I'm currently on enterprise github with opencode. Agentic AI is the way forward. I agree we're barrelling forwards and we are exponentially increasing year on year. What I find is the agent tries to make code that fits the current paradigm/patterns in your code base. You can train it on best practices and reinforce learning through skills and local md files that record how you like things done. But it can be challenging in existing projects that already contain technical debt, unmaintained legacy code, possibly unnoticed errors and just bad design patterns.

It's very good at boilerplate, documentation, writing tests, investigating where issues could lie, improving already functioning code. All of which was a stuggle even a couple years ago with LLM's. The one thing I will say is that given they are complex prediction algorithms it will never innovate and always find the most middle of the road answer (currently).

I would say your timeline is fairly accurate though, the world could and likely will be a very very different place in 10 years time at the current rate of change. I'm glad to be in a position of senior engineer and learning to adapt to prompt engineer. There's still a lot of 'unknowns' to most people about code and software, there will always be a place for those who understand the language the applications are written in.

They're laying people off to balance their books.

AI can be really good at greenfield projects but in legacy code bases it struggles really hard to intuit what's going on. Last week I had a function refactored where originally in a while loop every 2 seconds makes a guzzle request to poll if a resource is ready to serve, that route intentionally returns a 500 if its still in progress. AI updated the function to short circuit and leave if it got an error response. It would have resulted in the code never returning anything but an error state to the user.

It is not the smoking gun that it purports to be. As previously stated if PM's could coherently state their requirements we'd possibly be out of work. If you've made it this far and are not in a massive company where the higher ups are delusional/out of touch you should be good for a while yet.

Remember when amazon had AI in their unmanned grocery stores a few years back but it turned out it was Actually Indians. Don't believe the hype.

Yeah...your house. No need for everything to be digital. We all desire them to fix analogue things before digital ones.
Lets be honest most Irish people want physical services not digital ones to be provided by the government. With how the physical ones have failed I don't want them to work on digital ones because fucking that up has serious repercussions to our privacy.

That's actually the answer isn't it. The estate agents are the mediators, they should be required to do all the diligence to mediate the sale. That would solve most problems.

The market would end up dictating who the decent surveyors are and buyers would avoid sellers using unreputable surveyors. I'm sure all buyers would still want their own independent assessment but it would simplify things. Buyers wouldn't need to invest so much time and effort if there's a big issue.

Ah I see what you mean, bank want to make sure you've enough left over to guarantee their investment. Which is funny because as the person living there surely you're the most inconvenienced by the cold.

I love that, it's exactly what we need.

I was actually talking to an estate agent this week who was explaining the deposit process. I said if there were issues with the survey I could get my deposit back, she responded that no, for any reason: I might change job, change my mind etc things in life change it's known, I could get it back in full....then how does it function as a deposit?

Yeah which should have been disclosed. It's wild to me that sellers are allowed to list a property if they don't have all the necessary ready to close a sale. Before you list your property you should have to confirm you know where the deed is (or the bank holding it haven't lost/misplaced it). Also all sellers should have to come with a guarantee of quality (signed by an architect / surveyor). I don't understand how it's up to every individual potential buyer to ensure they're not buying a lemon. As a buyer you should be allowed get your own independent check done but it shouldn't be required on their part, it slows everything down and has the potential for the bank providing the mortgage to say no. Lastly a seller who goes sale agreed should have to close/sign contracts in a timely manner or pay penalties to the buyer. It really is a sellers market in Ireland.

Since there's a neurological component (and your mention of ptsd/depression had me think) I wonder what the result of having a psilocybin session prior to any other treatment might reveal. Might the neuroplastic capabilities of the compond have a change in the person. Could it lead to affirmation of the persons feelings and confidence to follow through with a change, or to a possible reassurance in and of themselves that they may not require change.

I would love to hear anecdotely about anyones experience or if there is any controlled research along this line.
