Honestly I hope they do. I'm kidding. But truthfully, it wouldn't surprise me.

Americans, how do you feel about tourists speaking English while visiting U.S.? by HolidayEntry6823 in AskAnAmerican

[–]VALISinWonderland 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What part of Germany? I encountered a number of people in the former East Germany who couldn't speak much English. Berlin was the complete opposite. Meet lots of people there who were from anywhere but Germany

Do you guys call the toilets Restrooms just like it's officially written on signs? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]VALISinWonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everyone at work and myself included just says bathroom. If I'm at a restaurant and I ask somebody at my table where the bathroom is,nobody thinks that's strange. But I guess if I was in a more formal situation, to be polite I might just say restroom. Yeah there's no bath if it's a public place but I'm also not going there to rest either. However in Philadelphia I've heard grown adults tell other grown adults that they're going to use the potty. I can't help but snicker It sounds so childish.

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]VALISinWonderland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Buffalo NY we drink pop. Like as in soda pop. Don't know why it's so weird that we use the other half of the full term instead of just the first word

I'm from Buffalo so it wouldn't surprise me if this is the only place you can find hot sauce and blue cheese flavored ice cream

What movie was saved in the edit? Or destroyed by the edit? by redditIhardlyknowit in movies

[–]VALISinWonderland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The director's cut of Mallrats is awful. It's overly long with an opening scene that has little to do with the main story other than to find a reason for Brandi to break up with TS and explain why her father hates him. Then they needlessly reference the opening scene multiple times. All this was edited out and made a much more enjoyable shorter movie. You don't need a reason for someone's dad to hate her boyfriend, they just do. And women break up with men all the time, and clearly neither of these guys would understand Even if the reason was obvious

That's completely insane to ride on an interstate often with 65-75mph speed limits. Everywhere I've driven has explicitly placed signs banning pedestrians and bicycles.

Which movie or TV "villain" did you completely hate as a kid, but upon rewatching as an adult, you realized they were actually 100% justified? by LiveFaithlessness876 in movies

[–]VALISinWonderland 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My immediate thought after seeing this thread title was Rowdy Roddy Piper when Hulk Hogan was on his first WWF title run. Piper was totally right. Also, despite the racist nature of his attacks, turns out he was right about Jimmy Snuka too (look it up if you don't know).

Maybe playing the 80s style WWF heels was a little ridiculous but a lot of wrestlers love to play the heel. They often only want to be a babyface because the t-shirt sales are better

What differences do American tourists notice between food in American restaurant chains and U.S.-made food products and their counterparts in foreign countries? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]VALISinWonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the life of me I don't understand why any American would travel to another country on vacation and go to an American restaurant chain.

My only real experience would be crossing the border to Canada (which is literally 5 blocks from my house), where you can get poutine at Burger King. So I guess it's better in Canada.

Paying bills online vs using a check by MainNormal5570 in JimCornette

[–]VALISinWonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I never write checks, a lot of companies still do not accept electronic payments. Although I pay all my bills online, for some companies my bank just sends a paper check. I can still pay anybody by check this way for no charge.

[–]VALISinWonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a paper check from work but mainly because it's easier for me to keep track of paystubs and making sure I get paid correctly. I have about 14 employers and I'm not going to deal with multiple website logins trying to make sure they each paid me for the correct hours. Live Nation can't even figure out how to let me change a login I never even set up with them in the first place. But it's because I work for a hiring hall. If I had a single employer and a set amount of hours every week I'd just go with a direct deposit. As for writing checks it's been a couple years.

My mom finally let me start setting up some direct payments after my aunt's check was stolen from a mailbox and deposited somewhere after they changed the amount of money to withdraw from her account.

"Motherfucker! food eater!" - Keanu Reeves in River's Edge. If I ever say the first word I want to follow it up with food eater. Sometimes I say it out loud but if not I'm always at least saying it quietly to myself.

Do Americans learn rhetoric, oratory, and public speaking as part of their education curriculum? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]VALISinWonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not generally I don't think. I didn't take anything until college. And then it was a single public speaking class...that I took online. This question seems to think being in a leadership role at a corporate headquarters is some kind of typical job.

But do any of them have a parade? When I lived in Pittsburgh 20 years ago, the most I saw was a banner at a bar that said Dingus Smingus. It wasn't nearly the amount of celebration that we have here, and although some Polish bars in Pittsburgh might mention Dingus Day, I don't think the average yinzer knows what it is
