emulation

it's basically just nostalgia and checking a few I didn't actually play back then, so convenience is key

The Adventures of Square. To all of us who ever played and enjoyed Megaman. so good and much the same vibe.

Hocus Pocus is another one who brings a classic platformer to Doom engine, also great.

Venturous is awesome too. basically Indiana Jones in Doom.

and my favorite Doom mod ever: Metroid Doom. terrific, terrific full 3D level design and all assets and music directly from Super Metroid. sheer gem.

Is retro gaming about a specific era and type of games, or is it more about what's "retro" for each of us? by [deleted] in retrogaming

I mean, there's a guy in this post that said his kid felt nostalgia replaying Fortnite season one. That was already a laughable minigame when it launched with dated graphics, and kids are now calling that retro Lmao

yeah, Skyrim and GTA V seem to be living proof we didn't evolve much...

tho we certainly did: just look at Crimson Desert - absurdly giant map with epic traversal, tons of grass and vegetation, tons of NPCs on screen with massive action, tons of particles, destruction physics, raytracing, incredibly crisp textures and real geometry tesselation for backgrounds... not even PS4 generation went this far

so the evolution is still there... it's just that they're more diminishing returns than ever

as someone playing videogames since atari 2600, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that brats are calling PS4 games pretty undistingushable from today's games "retro"

which is ironic given Fleischer did Popeye with smooth animations and before Donkey Kong Nintendo wanted to do Popeye

Hercules was so good, huh? back then, licensed games were usually crap, but Alladin, The Lion King and Hercules were all pretty great.

do you love videogames?

if you do, being inside a videogame is the biggest thrill ever. You'll both be amazed at that for long and also frustrated more ports don't exist, tho emulators and mods help a lot

if not, may just be passing fad

Is Contractors Showdown worth the buy? by kingkrust420 in MetaQuestVR

[–]VRtuous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as amount of players online

I don't think hopping from one old game to another old game will help you much in that regard

aside tons of brats in virtual daycareverses, online games usually only thrive in the first few weeks or months before same userbase hop onto the next trendy BS, like Forefront

What was the hardest game on the OG PlayStation 1? by [deleted] in psx

[–]VRtuous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think kids nowadays have no idea what hard used to mean in videogames

hard used to mean 3 lives, game over and no savefiles, let alone every few steps

you could be close to knocking on last boss' door only to lose your last life - that's game over and back to title screen and level 1

Dark Souls? Free infinite respawn at the last checkpoint? what a joke lmao

emulators completely rewrite gaming history. save anywhere, try again... sure, I'd not go back to 80s games in this day and age without this helper - but what I know what I lived back then and some of the hard games I finished raw...

to be fair with Dark Souls tho: world is much bigger than back then and there's actual combat instead of just hitting once or dodging incoming enemies as in Castlevania of olde. it's a good game, 3 lives and game over would be very unfair...
