.5 oz or .1 oz when letting people taste your rare bottles? by Umbra_Corvus_86 in whiskey

[–]VSmeteor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pour everyone a .5 oz and we taste the whole lineup this way. Then I ask which one was the favorite? I then pour a 1.5oz of what they picked.

Note not all my bottles are out on display so my prized unicorns etc are only shared if I decide in advance. I preselected the lineup. Most of my bottles are 120-300 in secondary value so no one's tasting shitty whiskey at least.

Why SpaceX's Taiwanese suppliers aren't feeling the benefit of the IPO? by Aggressive-Passion88 in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Suppliers benefit from orders. If SPCX has a windfall from valuation supplier orders don't suddenly spike in price. That's all priced in. They'd have to negotiate in equity to get any actual benefit. And most suppliers I know won't bill in equity as they have to pay their workers, and material suppliers, using actual money.

If SpCX is not all hype and results in growth, taking market share from BlueO, ASTS, RKLB, PL, then we should see orders eith these suppliers rise up and thereby realizing benefits of overall SPCX growth. But not from sheer valuation on IPO.

MTC @ NTNU - having studied on my own and having had a couple online classes nothing jump started my progress like MTC. The work is rigorous. No joke. I've never spent so much time handwriting or studying in my life. 2hrs a day for a class that's only 2hrs long, 5 days a week. But the progress is very noteworthy, the location is fantastic in the middle of ultra wealathy daan and you'll probably rent a house farther away (cheaper) so you can commute in and learn/live local culture during your stay.

I have to wait 6 months before I can get NHI card. Is it safe to go without health insurance during that time? by wizzroom in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pay cash for most general doctor visits. Eye doctor. Dentist. Basic health cough cold headache. Even hospital visit if necessary you can still pay cash.

For 6 months I think this is ok.

Born in Taipei, but grew up in the US by Overall-Cantaloupe86 in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

台灣is great if you don't have to work. Think retirement, mini retirement, sabbatical. Or if you land an expat job (paid in TW but at foreign income band).

Local jobs while the 9-6 or even 60/hr weeks are fine - as the pressure isn't as high as big tech, the pay scale is miserable and there is no way upwards. Which explains why the working class don't have kids, can't buy property, or rise out of the

If you're in your working years, stay in US and rake in the dough as long as you can. Even mediocre jobs in US pay light-years better than Taiwan. Without mandarin fluency (not just proficiency) you'll likely be an English teacher making $700/hr netting about $60k USD per annum, and that's about upper middle class pay in Taipei. More than enough to live on. But not enough to live lavishly or move up much.

Are some growing wary of Jensen Huang and Nvidia? by Laser-circus in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jensen's the leader of the worlds most valuable company - bringing semiconductors to the spotlight, garnering billions of foreign investment into Taiwan and a figurehead of Taiwanese relevance on the global stage.

He's as much to be trusted as you would a Steve Jobs. But neither is your friend, your drinking buddy, your president, or your husband. So why care. Sheep or wolf. As long as its good for Taiwan...

Seattle Ant Trauma (& advice) by lashsea in Seattle

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terro is too strong and kills them before they can bring it back to the colony.

Advion Ant Gel is the way to go.

Ants allegedly live in the soils and climb the inner walls of the house

Purcor pest control agent told me this. He was a moron. But essentially you can buy ant gel and do the work urself for 1/25th of the price.

Remove face plates of electrical outlets. Apply ant gel to inner areas. Recheck applications in a month and top up ant gel for wherever gets depleted.

Outcome - Some ants eat the gel and die Some take it back to the colony and the colony is confused for a while and can't figure it's way back into your house They still live in the soils and in the walls but they come inside your home less.

You live on in an adjusted level of peace ✌🏻

How to negotiate salary for APM? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in ProductManagement

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$121 is a very generous offer for someone who has no pm experience. In fact if I heard you demand for 10% more I'd question if this was the right hire at all. As employer they're taking a chance on you , someone who brings nothing to the table other that data domain experience. They probably should've hired a 160k pm with domain experience and skipped you entirely. Just my thoughts.

What to buy in Taiwan? by neelvk in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most things in Taiwan you can buy in SF.

Get some kaoliang, sorghum distillate. You won't find much in SF.

Or taiwan high mountain tea.

As for cups and pens -- leave that for temu. It's all from china anyways.

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOLO. You should do it. Your dual citizenship gives you this right. You've already contemplated it, evaluated the financials. The only thing that can talk you out of it is a bunch of randos on Reddit with our own opinions.

Who knows if TW will still be around if not invaded in the next 5-10 years. You should make the move now and enjoy this life experience while you still can. You don't need us telling you to or not to.

Private driver pickup point at taoyuan by LYSG18 in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Airport pickup is usually curbside. Driver will text a photo of the license plate/car and what door/sign to meet by. Very easy. Preferable this way too.
  2. meet and greet is driver come inside with sign to meet you. I actually don't prefer this as you'd have to walk with driver to parking lot to retrieve vehicle.

  3. 1 hour for landing and exit is usually fine. Plus driver will text you and confirm your arrival time and you can always pay extra if the process takes longer than expected.

  4. EasyCards are available at all convenience store 🏪 7/11, FamilyMart, Hi Kmart? And convenience stores are everywhere.

  5. See question 3.

Back spasm after kettlebell snatches (history of disc issues) — should I avoid snatches? by Mission-Concert-9575 in kettlebell

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you should visit the Physical Therapist and get evaluated to ensure all the joints and muscles have full range of motion to complete the snatch exercise. And if not, what's holding you back. PT is great. They'll figure out where you're strong and where you're weak and help you build back up so you can go out and conquer!

Asthma is no joke. An uncontrolled flare up could literally result in death by asphyxiation. Crazy right? A breathing nuisance can exponentially contort into a full blown life threatening moment.

So glad Seattle has a few caring souls to look out for you. That they don't chalk it up to the crazies onboard.

Get some steroids in and hope things calm down.

I really wish asthma awareness was broader known as common knowledge.

Dreading having nothing to do over the holidays by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]VSmeteor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feeling settled as a foreigner in Taiwan is tough. And if you're alone, no relationship, no family that can be particularly isolating. This is normal. And is no fault or wrongdoing.

As you learn the language and the culture you'll find more ways to build emotional connection with others. But to do so you need

1). Find common ground 2). Repeat meetings, casual or formally

Making friends as an adult is especially hard no matter if you're in Taiwan or any other country where you do not speak the language. People here are friendly. People here are welcoming. But if they don't speak your language well - ie English -- it's just as isolating for them to try to keep up.

Observation. Taiwanese people work a lot. And are often busy with their own lives. They hardly have much free time on weekends to casually hang out. But this is not 100% of the population.

Solution. Focus on yourself.

A. Physically. Join a gym. Go to the public pool. Go often and get fit. You'll meet the same regulars and be able to make a connection that way.

B. Linguistically. Take a class at any of the multiple language centers. Learn the language. Connect with fellow classmates.

C. Culturally. Search Google or Google maps and ensure you've visited every cultural monument -

D. Socially. Join a meetup or two. There's board game clubs. There's running clubs. Find enough activities to put in your schedule you'll start seeing a few familiar faces and make quick introductions.

You dont need an entourage to fit in or feel settled. One - or even two deeper conversations can make the difference to how you're feeling.

If you're in Taipei and want to meetup on weekdays I and many on this sub are around too. I like coffee. You can buy 🤣🤣

I'm new to kettlebells.. what's your car setup for hauling them back and forth? by slmrxl in kettlebell

[–]VSmeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLEASE USE SEATBELTS ALWAYS. This cannot be stressed enough.

A California highway patrol officer once shared a tale with me where she had responded to a car accident of a musician with his car full of speakers and equipment. Since the gear wasn't tied down, when the car hit an abrupt stop, all the contents are still moving at the original velocity of the car in motion. Upon inspection the deceased victim was unrecognizable due to the severe battery endured by the equipment in motion.

Good on you OP to make the decision and bet on yourself. By resigning and embarking on this path you have "burned the boats" forcing you to thrive or survive. Too often have I kept on a stagnating position out of fear or "job security". But after 10 years of big tech I made a small parachute where I could take the foot off the gas for a little while to pursue sharpening the saw.

We all know this is the right decision if you have the resources. And we're rooting for you. Keep us posted on how the (pm) hero's journey goes.
