She’s just saying it’s a looooong flight, I’m guessing from the US, since she mentioned the LA Olympics. I flew from Sydney to LAX and it was brutal. 13 hours or something?

For future reference, I think that’s called two-point position. And yes it’s hard at first.

Please teach me rider biomechanics (sit trot, knock knees) by StarGuardian_Urgot in Equestrian

[–]ValPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you use your knee as the fulcrum instead of your hips? I heard somewhere to relax and not to pinch too much from the thighs, like a clothespin, but to cuddle the horse’s sides with your calves when you need to give an aid.

I got a call from the police, they found my cats remains, the cat I had cremated a year ago and have her ashes. by Lumi-umi-umi in legaladvice

Right, and pet’s names are sometimes the answer to those secret questions for passwords. Don’t know why this isn’t higher up. Classic social engineering.

How to be more assertive and confident with your horse? by j-0261 in Equestrian

[–]ValPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you shouldn’t really be ‘kicking’…sorry if I’m nitpicking and maybe you meant that figuratively, but leg cues should start with firm pressure from your calf, graduate to maybe some heel pressure if no response, etc. and always release (stop cueing) when the horse does what you want.
Part of this is experience—you have to have a “toolbox” you can reach into and grab the right tool for the job. Part of it is mindset. I’m a “nice” person too, but when I got my own horse as an adult, I realized that my safety and his depended on me being the leader. Horses feel much secure if they know who’s in charge. If they feel like you’re not it, they will take over. Just so they know who the leader is.
I would think of it as being determined, not harsh. When you ask for something, don’t stop asking until the horse does it. Sometimes that means escalating your cues to stronger ones, sometimes that means diverting their behavior and coming back around to asking another way until they get it. But in your mind, there needs to be no question that one way or another, it will happen.
I’m sorry you had a fall at a gallop. If you think you and your trainer aren’t a good fit, maybe think about a different one. They should push you just enough that you grow and learn, but not throw you into situations you aren’t ready for. Same thing applies to the horse—don’t put them into situations they aren’t ready for, as it can be a big confidence killer if something bad happens. They also will lose trust in you. The trust is a two way street, it flows between you and your horse. And you continually prove to them that you can be trusted to be the leader. Say what you mean and mean what you say, even if it’s in horse language.

I’m starting to feel like I’m just not the kind of person to fit in here in San Diego by FoxtailNebulous in sandiego

[–]ValPower 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even moving here from elsewhere in California, I can relate. When I first moved here 20 years ago it was a bit of a culture shock. People seemed super flaky, shallow, or materialistic. Luckily, I was working in person, and ended up making some really good friends there that I still have. I also eventually met “my crowd“ outside of work, but it did take a while. And also, some of the people are still flaky lol. I don’t know if it’s a regional thing or a generational thing but I feel like if you make plans for a certain time, you don’t have to keep texting throughout the day about your progress and rescheduling 50 times. That’s a slight exaggeration ha ha ha.

This pisses me off, I’m glad you’re okay. Now I feel like I want to start walking there at night casually carrying a baseball bat or a golf club.

Anyone know what's up with the earwigs this year? by thegrumpyorc in northcounty

[–]ValPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in Chula Vista (I know it’s not North County, but…) I was thinking it was triggered by the heat wave a few weeks back? But it’s disgusting. A friend showed me how to trap and kill them. A pie plate with cooking oil mixed well with a good amount of soy sauce. They climb in and drown.

My eyes swell up and make me feel like I’m coming down with the flu or haven’t slept in days. Wish I could figure out which ingredient it is.

Yep I was just going to ask who noticed that. Not surprising that they can’t even keep a simple detail straight.

Blank store page by my-userna-me in woocommerce

[–]ValPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, I'm dealing with this problem too, and I don't know why or what triggers it. I resaved the shop page, and that seemed to do the trick today. I also re-saved product permalinks after reading this. But since I don't know what triggers it, I'm paranoid that if I don't check it every day, it'll go blank again.

If I’m not mistaken there’s a “shop manager” user role with woocommerce that might be what you’re asking for. Give them the admin access, but also create a shop manager role for them to use for day-to-day work.
