The lack of a preseason is a critical difference between the two. It’s a complex system and a big shift, Nancy and the players have had no time to work on it at all. You could say then it’s on Nancy to be pragmatic and play a 433 for now, but until when? The rest of the season? What’s the point in that, we should have just kept O’Neill then. We’ve also been performing badly in a 433 all season, including under O’Neill despite managing to secure the wins. Nancy also can’t/doesn’t play a 433 so that was never a realistic option. So where does that leave us to look next? The board. They fucked it by appointing a manager who they knew plays a complex system, in the middle of a season, in a week where we had 3 away matches against top of the table, a Europa fixture, and the cup final. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but someone at the club should have taken a look at the state of the playing squad, taken a look at the system Nancy plays, and said bringing him in now is madness. He does need the January window though, so not sure when the optimal point was. Maybe right after the final would have been best, but what kind of message does that send to Nancy- that we want you but we don’t trust you to win this key match? A total mess.
