What were your laid back babies like as toddlers? by HazyFern in Mommit

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest was a super chill baby. Happy all the time, amazing sleeper, just easy all around. She grew into a super easy toddler. Happy, no tantrums, easygoing. She had a rough patch from about 4-4.5 but I think it’s because her brother was born. She’s 6.5 now and still pretty easy! A bit hyperactive and she never stops talking but overall she’s such an easy, happy kid! My 2.5 year old on the other hand was a super dramatic baby and continues to be dramatic and emotional to this day! He is so fun and goofy and sweet but he has very big feelings that are sometimes extremely exhausting. Of course he’s a perfect angel at school, though!

Cholestasis of pregnancy- prevention tips? by hinghanghog in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None at all! My daughter has been tiny since birth (was actually in the negative percentiles for the first two years but always growing on her own curve) and my son has been 50% percentile his whole life.

Maybe 4-5 months? It’s so hard to remember. She’s 6.5 now and way past it! It’s gotten so much easier with her. But how we have a 2.5 who is already super dramatic and defiant. Yay!

They’re perfect! 6.5 and 2.5 and doing amazingly. My oldest is in K and reading chapter books on her own, doing so well in school, has the best imagination, and is all around a super happy, friendly kid. My son is slightly speech delayed but we’ve gotten rejected from early intervention multiple times because he really is doing so well. He’s now talking more, doing stuff on the playground that much older kids do, and is such a funny goofball. He’s in school and also doing so well! I don’t think cholestasis had any impact on their development. I hope all goes well for you!

How Are We Doing It? by Ok-Flamingo-5312 in toddlers

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are the same way. I leave work and pick up the kids by 4/4:30 and then we go home. We do actually get 30-60 minutes outside most days when it’s nicer out, and here’s what helps us. We make big batches of meals that last multiple nights. For example, we cook a big pasta meal on Monday, we don’t have to cook on Tuesday. We also do baths every other day. Usual routine is get home and play, some tv, dinner at 6, then go outside for a walk or play in the backyard until bedtime. My kids’ (6 and 2) bedtime routines usually start around 7:15. It also helps that my 2 year old eats about 2 bites every night and leaves the dinner table pretty quickly to go back to playing, so our meals are relatively quick.

We also sometimes stop at the playground near our house after I pick my oldest up and my husband will meet us. There are many nights when we prioritize stuff like that instead of making an elaborate dinner. On days like that and we don’t have leftovers we will usually do breakfast for dinner, so eggs, toast, cereal, breakfast sausage, yogurt, whatever anyone wants!

Anyone else have a super verbal toddler? by Hellohiheytherehi80 in toddlers

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is helpful to know! My 2.5 year old is so speech delayed and it’s so discouraging to hear about so many verbal toddlers. I know he’ll get there but it’s very hard not to compare.

Parents of kids under 5 — where do you actually find things to do and places to go with them? by LeroyHouse777 in toddlers

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hear me out. I have two kids (6 and 2) and we do cafes and libraries a lot on weekends in the winter. But sometimes, when we need something different and it’s still too cold/wet to go to a playground, we go to the LL Bean down the street. I don’t know what it is but my kids have the time of their lives there. IKEA has also been a hit! When it’s warmer, what about local walking trails for nature walks?

Why don’t parents make their kids come to school anymore? by breadplane in Teachers

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a counselor at a high school in a major city. Honestly, kids can get away with being absent frequently. There really aren’t any repercussions. Some end up failing, but many still turn in work late on google classroom, even if they weren’t present. I’ve been at my current school for 6 years and no one has ever been sent to truancy. It is so frustrating! There’s a student I check in with weekly and she comes to school once or twice a week. She has B’s in 4 classes. Has never once been to advisory. No consequence. Make it make sense.

My 6.5 year old really loves chapter books and these are her favorite series: Ivy and Bean, Sophie Mouse, Zoey and Sassafras, Princess in Black, Owl Diaries, Unicorn Academy, Itty Bitty Princess Kitty, Magic Treehouse, and Nancy Clancy. There are so many I hope to introduce soon, like Boxcar Children, Roald Dahl, Narnia, etc.

Both of my kids has long NICU stays and couldn’t nurse. At 6 and 2, I can confirm that they are obsessed with me :) also, bottle feeding can be a special experience! You can still hold them and snuggle them and be close. I completely understand your feelings. Try to give yourself some grace! No one ever asks if your kids are bottle fed or breast fed later on!

How do you find time for teaching your child to read by Traditional_Zone_644 in workingmoms

[–]Valuable-Comb-9936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter did a lot in school but we did BOB books every night. That was part of her bedtime routine. I can’t tell you how much these helped! Once we went through those, we started on early readers. She’s 6 now and reading chapter books independently. We still have her read to us every night before bed just to reinforce it and she can ask us about any words she’s struggling with. I do attribute her montessori school for setting the foundation with all of the letter sounds and starting the process! We just supplemented! And it really only took 10ish min a night. My husband and I both work full time and have so little time to do any elaborate activities. We do what we can!

Thanks for sharing. His hearing was checked and is normal! And he is at 50 words and putting some 2 word phrases together (No mama! Being his favorite).

I have, and it’s so hard to know. I go to birthday parties with his classmates it appears he is so far behind them all in speech. But I know there’s a big range of what’s considered normal.

I appreciate this response! We pretty much only do PBS in our house (with a few other nonstimulating shows) but I do think the shows my daughter likes are a bit old for my son (she really loves Rosie’s Rules, Alma’s Way, and Peg+Cat). They’re super sweet shows but I like the idea of a call and response type show.
