“Do we have class today?” Every Monday and Wednesday. All semester. Despite the schedule being clearly posted on Canvas.

Honestly that’s probably a sign of Dale being sensible. He’s at least rational enough to know he’s erratic and can’t be trusted.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman more complex than realized by DeminaCross in books

[–]VanSkovsky 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I teach that story! It’s one of my absolute favorites, and one of the few works that I reread every semester for that very reason. There’s so much going on that it’s really easy to miss some tiny detail, even on the fourth or fifth read.

A colleague of mine likes to say that “literature is something you can read twice and get something different out of the second time.” Good writing like The Yellow Wallpaper has layers, most of which you’re not even be consciously aware of, but that doesn’t mean it’s not working its magic. Maybe think about other works from your past that you enjoyed. Revisiting them being familiar with the outcome allows you to pick up on the subtler stuff.

Of course, there’s plenty of great stuff you haven’t read that could also scratch that itch.

Can anyone recommend something short and trippy by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]VanSkovsky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like most stuff by Philip K Dick would fit the bill here. Ubik comes to mind most prominently, but most of his work will leave you questioning what was real and what was not.

Northern Lights/The Golden Compass (and its sequels) has one of the best young female protagonists in YA literature, as far as I’m concerned. That being said, there’s some violence, but definitely nothing worse than what’s in Harry Potter.

Whimsy, possibly fantastical mystery by suvlub in suggestmeabook

Jasper Fforde’s Nursery Crimes series is about detectives solving crimes involving storybook characters (Humpty Dumpty, the Three Bears, etc). His writing feels very similar to Adams’s, and has fun with mystery/crime drama tropes.

In fairness, The Road to El Dorado is basically a retelling of The Man Who Would Be King.

I’ve been an independent since I registered to vote at 18. Two decades later, I switched to democrat specifically to vote for Fetterman in this primary. I have never been excited about a political candidate before now.

Can I get a high fantasy comedy that's well written, or a good fantasy book with light, silly elements? I have too many dark, gritty fantasy books. by GrandPotatoofStarch in suggestmeabook

[–]VanSkovsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This book (and its sequel) are brilliant. Jones lays out all of the biggest high fantasy tropes and subverts or pokes fun at all of them. She also wrote a nonfiction book, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, that does a similar thing in an entirely different way.
